About

Lady of the Water
Lady of the Water

Take a walk in the Grizedale Forest Sculpture Park in Cumbria and you will come across the five meter tall wooden sculpture ”Woman of the Water” by contemporary Irish artist Alannan Robins. This work is ranked by The Guardian as one of the top eight sculptures of the female figure in England in a group which impressively includes the artist Henry Moore. Yet another masterpiece by Alannah Robins - the playful bronze sculpture ”Reflex” – is not more than a hand high. Between these two pieces exists a wide spectrum both in terms of size, material and expression.

Alannah Robins is now working on a full scale version of her tiny bronze girl ”Reflex”. The skeleton has been built in iron to give the piece stability, but the rest will be created entirely in liquorice. This sculpture will be given a prominent place during the Liquorice Festival in Stockholm, March 21-22, last year with a visitor count of 10 000 (of course in relation to the actual money collected for covering her time here on Kickstarter). Alannah Robins sculpture is a part of Galleri Duerr’s exhibition ”Playfulness and the Lack Thereof” together with the American artists Matt Miley and David Eisenhauer and the Swedish artists Lina L. Baker (with a bachelor of photography from Scottland) and Patrik Lundell who has just returned to Stockholm after two years in Florence.

Galleri Duerr strives to highlight positive role models, exhibiting established and upcoming artists together. We work cross cultural and combine various forms of art and design. As the only participating gallery during the Liquorice Festival this year we are hoping to reach an entire new audience. You will be able to follow Alannah Robins entire process on the websites and facebook pages of the Liquorice Festival and of Galleri Duerr.

Risks and challenges

The challenge lies in translating Alannah’s original bronze sculpture ”Reflex”, not more than a hand high, into full natural size while at the same time working in a totally new material, liquorice!

Alannah Robins graduated with an honours degree in sculpture from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin and is used to working in a variety of materials, such as stone, bronze, wood, paper and even moose bone.

Alannah's five meter tall wooden sculpture ”Lady of the Water” is still standing in perfect condition after 20 years in the Grizedale Forest Sculpture Park, Cumbria, and is ranked as one of the top eight sculptures of the female body in England.

Alannah’s scuplture in liquorice will have a skeleton of iron (already constructed) for stability. For ease of transportation in spite of size and weight, the sculpture will be made in two parts. The skirt of the girl will be built up depending on how much liquorice straps we get in from our sponsors. If for some reason Alannah does not succeed in finishing the sculpture in time, she will complete the piece on location during the actual Liquorice Festival in mid March (of course in relation to the actual money collected for covering her time here on Kickstarter). Alannah's work can be followed via social media channels as well as in person through the window of her studio, an artists collective in Vasastan at Roslagsgatan 21 in Stockholm.

Alannahs work is a part of Galleri Duerr’s exhibition ”Playfullness and the Lack Thereof” which will be shown at the Liquorice Festival.
