About

Sword and Sonnet will be an anthology featuring genre stories about women and non-binary battle poets. Lyrical, shimmery sonnet-slingers. Grizzled, gritty poetpunks. Word nerds battling eldritch evil. Haiku-wielding heroines.

Heian-era writer Sei Shōnagon was renowned for intimidating the men of court with her knowledge of poetry. We want to publish stories with awesome take-no-prisoner poets like Shōnagon.

We have a wonderful group of writers who have agreed to write stories for us: Alex AcksC. S. E. Cooney, Malon Edwards, Spencer Ellsworth, Samantha Henderson, S. L. Huang, Cassandra Khaw, Margo Lanagan, Khaalidah Muhammad-Ali, Tony Pi, A. Merc Rustad and A. C. Wise. We'll also be holding an open submission period.

The projects editors are Aidan Doyle, Rachael K. Jones and E. Catherine Tobler. As well as having editorial experience with PodCastle and Shimmer, we're also award-nominated writers. Our cover art is by Vlada Monakhova.

Although we envision the bulk of the stories will be fantasy, we'll also be open to science fiction or horror. We'll be publishing stories, not poems, but some of the tales may include the odd line of verse. We hope you'll be excited about the theme as we are.

Rewards

Update: The Masamune level (hardback, paperback and ebook) will also include ebook versions of The Ultra Fabulous Glitter Squadron Saves The World Again and the four Folley & Mallory Steampunk Egypt series.

The main rewards will be the ebook (MOBI and EPUB) and paperback versions of the anthology. We'll also be making a Kickstarter-exclusive collector's edition hardback.

All rewards above the Shonagon level will include a copy of the ebook and paperback.

The ebook edition of A. C. Wise's collection, The Ultra Fabulous Glitter Squadron Saves The World Again is available at the Glamdring level.

The first four books of E. Catherine Tobler's Egyptian steampunk series (Rings of Anubis, The Glass Falcon, The Honey Mummy, The Clockwork Tomb) are available as ebooks or signed paperbacks.

Rachael K. Jones is offering a jar of delicious jar of homemade jam. Flavors will be determined upon seasonal availability. (Limited to US backers).

Vlada Monakhova's beautiful cover art is available as a 11x14 print, produced on archival matte paper.

Aidan Doyle is offering a set of 25 photo postcards with images taken from Aidan's visits to more than 100 countries.

For writers we're offering critiques of short stories (up to 6000 words).

For backers outside of the US, reward levels are listed in Australian dollars. 1 AUD is roughly 0.78 USD. After you've selected your reward level, postage costs will be added to the total. We're able to ship books from USA and Australia.

Stretch Goals

If we reach $15000 (AUD) we'll commision some internal illustrations (artists TBD) for the book.

If we reach $18000 (AUD) we'll bump up the payment for our contributors from 6c US a word to 8c.

Open Submission Period

If the Kickstarter funds, we'll be having an open submission for stories featuring women or non-binary battle poets. We'll be looking for stories up to 5000 words and paying SFWA professional rates of US 6c a word. The open sub period will run from Feb 1 - Mar 1. We will post more detailed guidelines after the Kickstarter closes.

We're looking for stories (not poems), but stories can have verse in them (although they don't have to). If you're unsure of what kind of stories we're looking for, Malon Edwards' The Half Dark Promise is an example of a story we love.

Contributors

As well as the open submission period, we have a wonderful group of writers who have agreed to write stories for us.

Alex Acks is a writer, geologist, and dapper AF. They’ve had short stories in Strange Horizons, Crossed Genres, Daily Science Fiction, Lightspeed, and more, and movie reviews in Strange Horizons and Mothership Zeta. Alex has also written scripts for Six to Start and Toska Productions. http://katsudon.net/ @katsudonburi.

C. S. E. Cooney (csecooney.com@csecooney) is an audiobook narrator, the singer/songwriter Brimstone Rhine, and author of World Fantasy Award-winning Bone Swans: Stories. Her short fiction and poetry can be found at Lightspeed, Strange Horizons, Apex, Uncanny, Lakeside Circus, Black Gate, Papaveria Press, GigaNotoSaurus, Goblin Fruit, Clockwork Phoenix 3 & 5, The Mammoth Book of Steampunk, Rich Horton's and Paula Guran's Year's Best Science Fiction and Fantasy anthologies, and elsewhere.

Malon Edwards was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, but now lives in the Greater Toronto Area, where he was lured by his beautiful Canadian wife. Many of his short stories are set in an alternate Chicago and feature people of color. Malon also serves as Grants Administrator for the Speculative Literature Foundation, which provides a number of grants for writers of speculative literature.

Spencer Ellsworth has been writing since he learned how. His short fiction has previously appeared in Lightspeed Magazine, Fantasy & Science Fiction, and at Tor.com. His space opera trilogy, A Red Peace, Shadow Sun Seven & Memory's Blade, was released by Tor in 2017 and 2018. Over the years, he's worked as a wilderness survival instructor, paraeducator in a special education classroom, and in publishing; he currently lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife and three children and works at a small tribal college on a Native American reservation.

Samantha Henderson's short fiction and poetry have been published in Strange Horizons, Clarkesworld, Interzone, Weird Tales, Goblin Fruit, and Mythic Delirium and in the anthologies Tomorrow's Cthulhu, Running with the Pack, and Zombies: Shambling through the Ages. Her work has been reprinted in Year's Best Science Fiction 34, the Nebula Awards Showcase, Aliens: Recent Encounters, Steampunk Reloaded, and The Mammoth Book of Steampunk. Her stories have been podcast at PodCastle, Escape Pod, Drabblecast and Strange Horizons, and she's the author of the Forgotten Realms novels Heaven's Bones and Dawnbringer. She is very fond of pomegranates.

SL Huang is an Amazon-bestselling author who justifies her MIT degree by using it to write eccentric mathematical superhero fiction. Her debut novel, Zero Sum Game, is upcoming from Tor in 2018, and her short fiction has sold to Analog, Nature, and The Best American Science Fiction & Fantasy 2016. She is also a Hollywood stuntwoman and firearms expert, where she's appeared on shows such as Battlestar Galactica and Raising Hope and worked with actors such as Sean Patrick Flanery, Jason Momoa, and Danny Glover. She currently lives in Tokyo. Follow her online at www.slhuang.com or @sl_huang.

Cassandra Khaw writes games, press releases, tie-in fiction, short fiction, long fiction, and terrible bios. She is a Locus Award and British Fantasy Award finalist, and a German Game Award winner. Her most recent novella, the Lovecraftian Southern Gothic A SONG FOR QUIET was released in August. In her free time, she punches things.

Margo Lanagan's work has won a slew of awards, including four World Fantasy Awards, and has been translated into many languages. She has published six short story collections and two dark fantasy novels. Her most recent novel is Sea Hearts, her most recent collection of short stories Singing My Sister Down and Other Stories. The first two books of her Zeroes YA superheroes trilogy (written with Scott Westerfeld and Deborah Biancotti) were New York Times bestsellers, and the series concludes in November with the third volume. Margo lives in Sydney.

Khaalidah Muhammad-Ali has been published at or has publications upcoming in Strange Horizons, Fiyah Magazine, Diabolical Plots and others. You can hear her narrations at any of the four Escape Artists podcasts, Far Fetched Fables, and Strange Horizons. Khaalidah is co-editor at PodCastle audio magazine, where she is on a mission to encourage more women and POC to submit fantasy stories. Of her alter ego, K from the planet Vega, it is rumored that she owns a time machine and knows the secret to immortality. She can be found online at http://khaalidah.com and @khaalidah.

Originally from Taiwan, Dr. Tony Pi earned his Ph.D. in Linguistics at McGill University and now lives in Toronto, Canada, where he writes fantasy and science fiction. He was a finalist for the 2009 John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer, and won the 2015 Aurora Award for Best Poem/Song. He was a Writers of the Future Contest second place winner. www.tonypi.com.

A. Merc Rustad is a queer non-binary writer who lives in Minnesota and is a 2016 Nebula Awards finalist. Their stories have appeared in Lightspeed, Fireside, Apex, Uncanny, Shimmer, Cicada, and other fine venues. You can find Merc at @Merc_Rustad or at http://amercrustad.com. Their debut short story collection, SO YOU WANT TO BE A ROBOT, was published at Lethe Press in May 2017.

A.C. Wise's fiction has appeared in Shimmer, Clarkesworld, Tor.com, and The Year's Best Dark Fantasy and Horror 2017, among other places. Her collections The Ultra Fabulous Glitter Squadron Saves the World Again, and The Kissing Booth Girl and Other Stories are both published by Lethe Press. Her work has been a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award and the Sunburst Award. In addition to her fiction, she contributes a monthly review column to Apex Magazine. Find her online at www.acwise.net.

Risks and challenges

This is our first Kickstarter project, but collectively we have many years of experience with editing and producing magazines and podcasts such as Shimmer and PodCastle.

We can't guarantee that all of our contributors will be able to write a story in time, but since we'll be opening to general submissions, we're sure the standard of stories is going to be high.
