In a not so distant future, as global society is catapulted into civil unrest, only one force stands able and willing to fight for stability and peace - Treadwater.
NEW YORK, New York, April 21, 2013 --Originally written and developed as a screenplay, Darkrose Studios is adapting the ideas behind Treadwater into a graphic novel that is rapidly growing a following.
In a pre-apocalyptic tale, as the world is forced to deal with the effects of an unstable global economy, the Euro finally collapses. The world nose dives into chaos. Mass rioting, looting, and outright civil disobedience erupts. While many nations begin to focus on protecting and securing their respective borders, others feel that the only way to deter attacks is with a preemptive gesture of strength. As Germany forms its aggressive stance behind a true military German patriot, General Kirklau, it becomes more than evident that the balance of global powers is all but obsolete. Governments and worldwide organizations have their hands tied, as one wrong move by any of them could launch an all-out world war. Treadwater is the only organization taking a proactive stance to keep the world afloat, while others helplessly do just that – tread water.
Treadwater, referenced by the acronym TRDWTR (Technological Research and Development Working Toward a Resolution), is the product of a brilliant medical researcher named Allen Downs. Downs has hand-picked each member of the TRDWTR team by bartering something uniquely important to them in exchange for working as one of his super operatives. While General Kirklau and Germany are perceived to be the biggest threat by the rest of the world, another, much bigger THREAT grows stronger – the Children of Chaos. TRDWTR knows that it’s only a matter of time before the world sees true destruction and devastation at their hands.
This Graphic Novel WILL BE one of the most beautifully detailed and mentally (and emotionally) stimulating graphic novels of it's time. Period.
The screenplay itself is 127 pages, but as we convert it to a Graphic Novel, it has NOT been a 1:1 ratio. Meaning, the Graphic Novel will likely be closer to 230+ pages. While we have already begun work on the Graphic Novel pages, it will take some time before the book is finished and ready for print. But at least we got a head start! You can read the first 20+ pages for FREE on the TRDWTR website! ;)
SNEAK PEAK..... (Page art by the amazing RAY DILLON). Visit trdwtr.com to read the first 28 pages absolutely FREE!!!
If you want to learn about Treadwater the cool way, I'd strongly recommend visiting our ridiculously cool Treadwater website. Here you can learn about the Operatives, and their spec techs (special technologies), as well as taking a tour of their top secret facility in Greenland.
On the "Facility" tab, just click on a specific room on the schematic (as seen below), and the background image will change to the respective room. We wanted to create a world you could submerge yourself into....so please, submerge :)
As you can see, Treadwater is far more than just a Graphic Novel. It is a franchise. Now that we've eclipsed the $10,000 minimum funding goal, we can turn our attention to bigger things....
Stretch Goal #1: First Issue Motion Comic Webisode
If we can eclipse a total of $15,000, we can turn the first 20+ pages (the first issue equivalent) into a Motion Comic (Animated Film) - with voice actors, sound effects, and music. This Video Webisode will not only be thoroughly enjoyable for our fans, but will also give us something really great to use as part of our pitch - increasing our chances of turning Treadwater into a Video Game or Motion Picture!
Stretch Goals #2-8: Operative Origin Motion Comic Webisode
Each operative has a very unique and complex backstory and we are just itching to share each of their stories with you in this webisode format!
If we can eclipse $20,000 we will be able to make a motion comic webisode for one of the seven operatives. This webisode will be a spinoff prequel of how the character became a member of Treadwater.
For every $5,000 we raise passed $20,000, we will be able to make an additional Operative Origin Webisode. We will let you (our fans) vote on which operative's origin we do first.
And, the coolest part is that we will be able to work on these videos simultaneously as Ray continues to paint the graphic novel. This will NOT affect the release date of the book, rather will allow us to bring you more AWESOME content for FREE while you wait for the book! :)
Never used Kickstarter before? It's easy!
Kickstarter is unlike regular online ordering experiences in that you are not buying an item for precise arrival, you are joining us in our personal adventure to complete this project. You'll be with us for both the victories as well as the bumps and difficulties, all culminating in receiving the final product which we have all given so much to achieve. Kickstarter is more about supporting ideas, people, and projects than it is to receive an item right away. Just so you're aware of everything before you join us on this mission :)
- Step 1. Create a Kickstarter account, and determine payment method
- Step 2. Decide which Reward you'd like, taking special note of release dates and any shipping estimates.
- Step 3. Wait and see what happens! If our campaign is successful by the end of countdown, then your card will be charged and your reward is secured. If our campaign is unsuccessful, then your card will NOT be charged.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
You'll notice the title of this Kickstarter campaign says "Treadwater 2.0", that is because this is the second time we are running this campaign. Having never done Kickstarter before, we set a funding goal that was a bit overzealous the first time around, thus making it hard to reach our minimum funding goal. We even chipped in our own personal funds to bridge the gap, but Kickstarter said that it was against their policies, so we had to take it down and start from scratch.
Not to worry, we have learned from that experience and Treadwater 2.0 has a very focused and KS approved plan with realistic funding goals! :)
Ray Dillon, the Artist providing the sequential illustrations for the Graphic Novel is contracted to produce 6 finished pages every two weeks. This book will be somewhere in the vicinity of 200-260 pages. The reason I cannot give you an exact page number is because we are converting a script into a graphic novel, and so far the conversion has NOT been a 1:1 ratio.
If we stay on plan, the book should be finished and go into print by around December 2014. The hope is that we will finish it a lot sooner than that, but realistically we're looking at about December 2014 before you get the book into your hands. I asked Ray to put the highest level of detail into the artwork, which is why the pages will take so long to complete. I chose to have a better quality of artwork and have the book take a little longer to complete, rather than sacrificing quality simply to get the book finished sooner. I think you'll be very happy with the end result :)
Other risks... Ray could always break his hand or get sick, which would slow the process. Let's knock on wood though.
This will be my first Graphic Novel, so I can see how one might view that as a risk. But, at this point in the process, we are so far along already, that there are truly very few risks that remain.
I spent a lot of time researching and speaking with people about how to do this the right way, and both of the people that have the biggest hands in this project have done this sort of thing before. Ray is an award winning and best selling artist, and Don has four of his scripts currently being turned into movies (three are in post production!)
Hopefully you can see that I have done my homework and know how to execute this project successfully.
My biggest challenge is remaining patient. I want to hold this book in my hand now! But I understand the process, and now my number one responsibility is making sure that I get the word out about Treadwater and developing a following! This way, we can make volumes 2 and 3 (remember I wrote it as a trilogy)! So by the time Vol 1 is out, we will already be well underway for Vol 2.
If this Treadwater Kickstarter campaign is successful, I will likely do another Kickstarter campaign for a Game-of-Thrones-esque story I am currently writing (with Don). #GemstoneKnights
