The Night Runner LED shoe lights let active people run and walk in the night and early morning safely and injury free.
Night Runner - LED Shoe Lights
Safely lighting the way for running at night.
Night Runner is a pair of state-of-the-art, LED shoe lights, designed to let active people run and walk from dusk until dawn. Night Runner attaches to your shoe laces almost unnoticed — until you turn them on, then they light the path ahead and where your feet will land, providing advance warning of trip hazards and making you instantly visible to traffic. Night Runner is great for running in urban areas, trail running, hiking and evening walks with the dog.
See and Be Seen.
Runner’s lead busy lives and that often means running after the sun has gone down. There are dozens of products on the market that promote runner safety but Night Runner is the safest solution, maximizing both vision and visibility.
See: Night Runner’s bright, rechargeable LEDs light the path ahead and exactly where you need it — right where your feet are going to land. This is an improvement over headlamps that create glare and don’t allow the pupils to adjust properly for night vision and the hand-held lights that require attention to illuminate the path properly. The low angle of Night Runner’s light beams are better at illuminating hazards, like irregular pavement, roots, and potholes that can’t be seen as well when lit from above.
Be Seen: Night Runner isn’t passive like reflective gear, and so it doesn’t depend on external light sources to make the runner visible. The wide, bright, low beams are distinctive and attention-grabbing, and instantly alert motorists that a runner is near.
Where did the idea come from?
I’ve been a frequent runner since high school, and have run a handful of marathons and road races. I love the serenity of running at night and in the early morning and, frankly, those are often the only times I can fit a run into my busy schedule. I have had my share of face-plants and injuries from tripping on uneven pavement and potholes.I’ve also had many near misses with cars that could not see me. One night, I turned down a particularly dark stretch of road and was distracted by the unfamiliar terrain, spending more time worrying about tripping and traffic than enjoying my run. Then it hit me! “I need headlights for my sneakers,”
The idea seemed simple enough, but there was no product like this on the market. After doing a bit of research, I found that there are more than 19 million runners that run an average of two to three times a week.
That’s a lot of people running in the dark!
I couldn’t be the only one that wanted to run safer. I set about to create a functional prototype from existing LED light units and taking them on long nighttime runs. The experience was truly enlightening.
We knew we had to make them lighter, brighter, and rechargeable, and they would need to attach securely to the shoe. We then created a design prototype to compliment the bold designs and colors of today’s running shoes. We are currently in the mechanical and electrical engineering design phase to combine all of these features.
Night Runner has a patent pending and has begun the design and engineering process. We have finalized the specifications and design direction and are now starting the industrial and mechanical design. Night Runner will then go through development and road testing before we build the final prototypes. The design process will be complete by summer 2013, and we will then begin the tooling process for the injection molding and the electronic assembly. The units will be packaged and shipped with a target delivery date of December, 2013.
Functional prototypes of the Night Runner have been under field testing since January, 2013. The LED technology and li-ion rechargeable batteries are proven technology. A design prototype (hand sculpted by the inventor) is being converted to 3-D CAD drawings and manufacturing specifications. The shoelace bracket and removable clip is being mechanically engineered. We have further mitigated design risk by contracting with a nationally recognized design and engineering team to combine all of these features. We are currently negotiating with both foreign and domestic manufacturers (our preference is to manufacture in the U.S.), and have allowed for five months to finalize design and manufacture the Night Runner units.

Our team is the best in the business and we have an achievable delivery schedule. With any design and manufacturing process, unforeseen delays can occur. However, we will not sacrifice your safety or the quality and functionality of Night Runner by rushing through the process.
Cool for being visible. have you tested. i'm curious as to if the shadows would cause confusion as to where you're placing your feet while running
We have been test running them for 4 months. No confusion. The low angle of the light makes the hazards more pronounced as opposed to lit from above.
I think this is a clever idea, but my own initial reaction is that this light is not so practical for night running. Is enough light thrown ahead of you so that you are aware of the dangers well before you are on top of them?
Yes. Each unit (one on each foot) will put out 45 lumens which is comparable to headlamps in illumination without the weight and discomfort.
Our runners found the low position of the lights to better illuminate hazards and making the shadows more pronounced providing advance warning of trouble.
The Night Runner units are hooded so no direct light reaches the runners eyes.
This is a brilliant idea for personal safety and I would like to see it modified to be a rear mounted light for approaching traffic. For the moment I will stick with my headlamp for night running as I get the right amount of light where I need it and with
There will always be runners more comfortable with headlamps.Night Runner provides an alternative for those that don’t like the headband and weight of the headlamps.
Oh my god what a great idea. I run daily in the early mornings 4.30am with my dog and at the moment wear a head lamp and a flashing red light to be seen. Sam wears a flashing light as well. I will definitely be assisting you with this campaign. Well done,
Ching Ching cheers to you and Happy Night Running!
I love running at night and often am told I look like a UFO with all the reflective gear and the LED arm bands I wear. This will add to my safety arsenal. Fingers are crossed you make your goal!
Thank you for your support and stay visable!
Love this concept! -and happy to see it on kickstarter. I am an avid early morning runner, and it is often dark. I have an annual wipeout that usually results in some injury. One comment on the design: will this flop around? or flip off as you are runnin
I'm glad you like it and we appreciate your support! The light unit can be adjusted and clicks into to the prefered position. It is very stable and the tightening of the shoe laces keeps them securely in place.
