March 21st 1918 'They're Coming over in Their Thousands'

I could hear rifle bolts and rifles being fired, but in the wrong direction, so we reported this to the Brigade. "They're here", we told them. This was most valuable to them for they knew exactly where the Germans were - in Gosling OP. Brigade ordered us to hang on as long as possible and keep reporting. We carried on like this for about ten minutes - we could hear the Germans talking up top. I had a last look and could see them and went down to give my last report - "They're coming over in their thousands"
