Geometry Shift is an abstract zero gravity racing game which will hopefully capture some of the elements from classic games like F-Zero and Extreme-G. Race online or offline on incredible rollercoaster like tracks. Customize your ship by purchasing many different parts from the shop with points. Unlock more crazy extreme tracks as you progress through the divisions racing increasingly sharper and faster opponents.

The game aims to steer away from races that are over quickly, we want more of a grand prix racing feel. To achieve this, each race will have a good amount of laps and we will be designing tracks to be larger in scale. We think this will make the game more skill based in that it will introduce racing strategy and allow racers to have more time to prove their edge over their opponents. The ships will have a vibrant style that will allow players to get a glimpse of each other even when they are huge distances apart.

The gameplay is designed to have the player build momentum by boosting, eventually accessing the redline state from which they will go into cruise mode. Now the player must maintain the speed they have attained through good steering flow and minimal use of the brakes. At the same time they can increase speed to no bounds by hitting boostpads making it harder to stay on the track in one piece. We think this is what will make Geometry Shift an exciting thoroughbred arcade racer.

In the game you can gain speed by using throttle and the booster. The booster depletes ship energy so you must maintain the energy levels by picking up energy from various sources in a race.

The current sources of energy are:

  • Pickups of various strength on the track which can be stolen by players in front.
  • Zones which will regenerate energy when you are inside.
  • Redline Discharge which is dropped by opponents when they access the redline state.

The best and quickest source of speed is boostpads, you must aim to hit as many as possible in order pass the threshold to the super high speed redline state. Once you are in the redline state cruise mode is activated, which means you only need to steer and focus on staying alive while keeping as much speed as possible. You can do this by hitting more boostpads and of course braking as little as possible - so in effect there is no speed limit. Once you hit redline state, if you keep chaining up the boostpads you will continue to rise in speed. This is good because you gain ground faster, but the balance is that you are more prone to flying of the track or crashing into an obstacle.

Your need for speed makes it easy for you to forget about your ships energy levels when your in redline state! Don't neglect your energy levels because if you do flyoff or crash you will be respawned with little energy and less speed to regain ground on your opponents.

So now you have gained mass amounts of speed, you might ask - how do we prevent flying off the track on those tight corners? You must use the particle brake, it will increase your steering angle to make those tricky situations easier. However, it is of course a brake so you must use it wisely to avoid losing too much of your precious speed.

The things that will make a winning racer:

  • Knowledge of each track.
  • Good at maintaining energy, on some areas of a track it could be a complete waste to use it.
  • Taking the best lines to access the most speed, even though it might be risky.
  • Good use of the particle brake in tight situations while not overusing it too much.

The final game will have a compilation of 30+ unique tracks in a mix of light and dark themed regions of space where you could be racing along side asteroid fields, moons, planets, plasma fields, both derelict and vibrant space structures, gas rings, mining facilities, orbital solar grid networks, bright stars and more. The tracks will be split up into different difficulty tiers. More on that in the 'tracks' section below.

Each track will be playable in all Gamemodes. The main game modes for the final game will be:

  • Circuit races
  • Sprint races
  • Team races
  • Elimination
  • Time trials

Hundreds of unlockables to customize your shard. Participate in races to accumulate points to unlock parts from the shop or complete achievements to unlock one time special parts.

Compete in leagues and rise to the upper echelons in the division based multiplayer or race in private races with friends.

The final game will have 30+ tracks with different levels of difficulty. A new player will have access to the first division of tracks. Once they have accumalated a sufficient number of points they will unlock the next division. The tracks will get progressively more challenging as you go through the divisions. The divisions will grade from Greenline to Blueline to Redline and finally Blackline. Each division will give the player a maximum number of respawns.

Greenline Division

The greenline division will feature wider tracks with a mix of long flowing corners and pipe sections to aid the player with staying on the track. The player will have infinite respawns.

Blueline Division

The blueline division will feature more oppurtunies to get to the redline state because of the higher frequency of boostpads and increased energy drops. The tracks will still be quite wide and forgiving for the less experienced player. The player will have 3 respawns per race.

Redline Division

A redline division track will feature even greater oppurtunities for speed and will be much harder as the track will have a much more complex design with track hazards and traps to test the more experienced player. The player will have 1 respawn per race.

Blackline Division

The blackline division is the most unforgiving division, featuring relentless speeds and insane tracks. Only the best racers will succeed at this level. The player will have no respawns in a blackline race.

Each track could be made up of narrow or wide straights, long banking turns, short narrow bends, snake runs, loops, deathdrops, twists, halfpipes, tubes, pipes, spirals, wallrides, chaos junctions, trapgates, elevators, steps and more!

In geometry shift the player is the ship, an energy based crystal, powered by its core with an ability to morph and shift its shape to maintain speed and flow as it adapts to the dynamics of the track. 

Spend your hard earned race points at the in-game shop to unlock new parts. Pick from a mixture of different hulls, cores and fins to create your ultimate shard. Enhance it with boosters, trails and other cool effects.

0112Studios is currently a two man team based in the UK working on our project Geometry Shift. We both really enjoy playing old school arcade racing games but the genre these days is mostly dominated by car racing simulation, so as game developers we decided to take it upon ourselves to bring back the high speed racing feel.

WHY KICKSTARTER?

Kickstarter is the perfect platform for an independent two man development team to get the assistance we need to complete the project. With the help and support of other people interested in this project we can hopefully achieve our goal of creating the game that we want to play too. As the project is being developed we can get valuable feedback from backers & fans which will help to refine the game. 

The 55k stretch goal will give us the extra time needed to release the game on Mac & Linux. 

The 65k stretch goal will allow for us to become Official Playstation Partners. This will not only bring the game to PS4 but we will also gain access to Sony's expertise which will help the overall quality of the game. 

The 75k stretch goal will give us the ability to recruit other members who can help with development either 3D modelling or programming which will speed up development time and increase overall game content i.e. tracks, ships, effects, animations, gamemodes, gameplay, graphics etc. 

The 100k stretch goal will give us the oppurtunity to move into the cutting edge of gaming technology by making the game VR compatible using Oculus Rift and Sony VR.

Risks and challenges

The primary challenge for us as a small two man development team is the delegation and allocation of workload. This means there is a risk to certain deadlines and features that we have planned as things get pushed up the priority list. Thankfully we gained lots of experience and knowledge through building the prototype and it has given us a good foundation to work off. It has helped us develop a good workflow for generating content which will allow us to build a large number of diverse tracks to keep the game fun.

Being two guys in different locations with separate skills can increase production problems and is generally more time consuming. This makes it a challenge to meet certain deadlines but if we are successfully funded then we can develop the game full time at a dedicated place of work and we will be able to complete the project much quicker.
