About this project
The MicroSteady is the answer to stabilizing your shots quickly, whether you are shooting with a smartphone, such as an iPhone or Android Phone, point and shoot, GoPro, traditional video camera or a DSLR. One of the biggest complaints people have with camera stabilizers is the amount of time it takes to balance their camera. Once you understand the process, the MicroSteady can be balanced in just a few minutes.
We need your help to bring this project to reality, which will allow us to bring the MicroSteady to the masses at a reasonable price.
What the pros say:
"The balance is incredible!" - John Hill, commercial Director of Photography (Pepsi, IBM, Subaru, and hundreds of other spots)
"It's really cool." - Tony Gaudioz, Director of Photography and Camera Operator on "HOUSE, M.D."
"It's absolutely amazing at how well this stabilizer performs." - Blake Bogdanovich, Director/Photographer.
MicroSteady Three-Axis Gimbal, Laser Etched Scale and Logo
The MicroSteady is made from aerospace grade aluminum, which is extremely lightweight and durable. Because it uses a gimbal, as opposed to a CV joint, it is more versatile than many other stabilization solutions on the market. It's capable of shooting upside down if you want extremely low angle shots.
MicroSteady Side-to-Side balance beam and DSLR camera mount
The MicroSteady is modular in design, which means you can change the vertical beam to allow for different size cameras. The PRO kit comes with both standard and EX (taller) beams. If you are shooting with a lightweight camera or your smartphone, then you can get by with the standard beam. If you put a heavier video camera or a DSLR on the stabilizer, then you can swap out the vertical beam for the taller EX version, which is capable of handling both smaller and larger cameras.
MicroSteady ST and EX Models, Anodized in Silver
Some of the things that make the MicroSteady special are the quick releases that allow for quick adjustments of weights and other movable parts, such as sliding the camera forward or backward or moving the handle, without the need for tools. It has accessory slots that will allow you to add monitors, audio recorders or most products with a standard tripod screw hole. Furthermore, the design of the MicroSteady allows you to replace the battery on most cameras, such as DSLRs, without having to remove the camera from the rig.
MicroSteady Dual Axis Level
The MicroSteady is equipped with a level that will help in the balancing process, which is mounted on one of the accessory slots. Over time, we will introduce some accessories of our own, which will make the MicroSteady an even more spectacular stabilizer.
MicroSteady Smartphone Mount
The MicroSteady will be available in two sizes, ST and EX. Both sizes are offered in three different colors, red, black and silver, The MicroSteady ST, is best used with small cameras, such as a smartphone, GoPro or a video capable point and shoot camera, while the MicroSteady EX can accommodate any size camera, up to a DSLR. When selecting your MicroSteady, you'll want to choose the type of camera mount you will be using. Inertia is a very important factor in camera stabilization, so we always recommend the slightly heavier EX model, if your budget allows. And, if you are a camera gear junkie, get the Pro Kit, which allows you to switch between the ST and EX versions.
In gratitude to everyone who helps us get our project off the ground, we are including a T-shirt and stickers with every MicroSteady. And, for a small additional fee we are offering to have your name or company logo laser etched into the MicroSteady, as well as your choice of color. The choice of color and laser etching is available on the MicroSteady Custom Rewards.
It has come to our attention that some people are confused about shipping costs. When you back our project at a given reward level, you must ADD the appropriate amount to the reward for shipping. So, if you click the $299 early bird reward, you must add either $35 or $60 to the amount manually, depending on where you live. If you have any questions about this, please ask.
This depends on of course your camera, but also your shooting needs and philosophy. Generally, the ST version will cover cameras from GoPro, to SmartPhones, to compact cameras like the Nikon J1. the EX will support cameras up the the canon 5D mk2 and many compact video cameras. The Pro kit lest you switch between any configuration, for those who are changing types of cameras often. The Pro also comes with a balancing dock and carrying bag for convenience. On the other hand, bigger and heavier equals more inertia, which is what makes the stabilizer work. So even if your are using an smartphone, you may want to opt for the EX model for maximum performance, if size and weight are not a primary concern.
If you want a custom logo on your MicroSteady, or a color other than silver, you must back a reward level that contains this option - for example the $389 MicroSteady Custom ST. Once the project has been funded, you will be asked what color you want and for an image of the logo and location to etch it. We intend to provide examples and templates for the etching before the project ends.
The handle on the MicroSteady is indeed machined from aluminum. It is surprisingly comfortable, however we know there are many of you that will want a gel grip. If you want this option, please post a comment after you back the project. If there are a large amount requested, it will become an option for ALL MicroSteady rewards. you will just specify which you want when the funding is complete.
If you require more than one camera mount for your MicroSteady, you can simply add $25 to your pledge for each additional mount you require. You can chose of the 4 mounts, which you will be asked to specify at the end of funding. So if you need both a phone and a GoPro, or just two different SLR's you want to keep the mounts attached to for convenience, you are covered with the extra $25.
The MicroSteady can be "flown" simply by guiding it from the bottom rail. However, included with the Pro reward level is a special purpose flight control handle that you can place in any available accessory slot. You can Place it under the gimbal for traditional low influence control, or on the bottom or side as a leverage point for large complex movements. We will be explaining and demonstrating this feature in detail in the near future.
The MicroSteady smartphone mount can accommodate phones that are straight sided, and up to 2.5" wide and 0.5" thick. If you are still unsure if your phone will fit, send us a message with the make and model, and we will let you know.
We will have a number of different demonstrations of the various MicroSteady rigs in the near future. We will post all of these as updates to our Kickstarter project, so keep an eye on this page!
