Welsh Mod: Our Story

Welsh Mod: Our Story is a project that will culminate in a high-quality, hard-back photographic book of 150 pages plus, documenting the roots and revival of the mod sub-culture in Wales from the 60s through to the present day. Pledge £25 plus £5.00 P&P to secure your copy of this limited edition publication.

Working with BAFTA-award winning Welsh photographer, Haydn Denman, http://www.haydndenman-photography.com, we will be photographing in many iconic locations across Wales.

We will be speaking to Welsh musicians, fashion designers, film directors, DJs, record collectors and scooter enthusiasts about what mod means to them and how it has changed their life.

The book will include interviews with those who were part of 'the scene' in the 60s such as musicians Andy Fairweather Low, Welsh-born fashion designer, Jeff Banks, as well as those who were introduced to mod in the punk/new-wave era such as The Alarm's Mike Peters and Richard Parfitt of The Colours and later the 60ft Dolls and award-winning writer and film director Jonathan Owen.

But this isn't just about famous people. The life-blood of this book will be the promoters, record collectors, vintage clothes traders and scooter enthusiasts across Wales who are keeping the mod scene alive and very stylish looking.

We will look at what keeps these 45 to 70 year-olds still shopping for three button suits, button down collars and loafers and why the phrase 'once a mod always a mod' rings true. A generation ago your average dad might be coveting a train set in the attic. These men are more likely to be found polishing the chrome on their Vespa Special on a sunday and attending one of the annual scooter rallies in Tenby or Llandudno.

We will also explore why the uniquely Welsh landscape and the South Wales valleys in particular seemed to spawn a massive mod revival in the late 70s and 80s. How 'valley' life, with its small clusters of towns and villages, many with their own Italian cafe favoured by the mods was the perfect playground for young mods who wanted to make something of themselves. We will also hear about the mod scenes' close connections with football in Wales and why style on the terraces was so important.

All these stories will be told against a backdrop of stunning photography by award-winning Welsh cameraman and photographer Haydn Denman. His documentary style of photography will capture perfectly the character and depth of the Welsh landscape and its people.

There has never been a book of this type that pays tribute to the mod scene in Wales. This will be a first. The book will be written by journalist and mod enthusiast Claire Mahoney and hopes to give a uniquely Welsh take on Britain's most enduring subculture and will appeal anyone interested in photography, fashion, subcultures and of course, Wales.

Risks and challenges

We have already started work on this project having done several photo shoots and interviews with people active in the mod scene today and those for whom it has been part of their lives since the 60s.

We aim for the book to be completed and printed by the end of November 2018, ready for Christmas 2018.

We will keep you updated at every stage via our website, Facebook page, Twitter and the Kickstarter page as we want you to be part of the process.

Our Facebook page already has attracted growing interest with the community pages acting as a focal point for people to share memories from their time as mods from the 80s and the 60s.
