What is RATS?
RAdio Transceiver System allows you to send encrypted messages and small files between two or more computers running Windows, Linux or Mac OS X without using Internet. Simply plug in the USB cable and start the RATS software and you are ready to communicate with another RATS unit.

How does the encryption work?
If you have entered an encryption password, then all your messages and files will be encrypted with AES-256. RATS also uses a randomized salt, which means that all encrypted data will generate unique encrypted strings. For example if you send exactly the same message 100 times with the same encryption password, the encrypted data will always be unique, even though it contains the exact same message.
The idea behind the frequency list is to allow users to download the latest frequency list (frequencies.xml) that contains a list of which frequencies you can use in a specific country. This list will be updated and maintained by the users of RATS with an easy-to-use interface.

Transfer speed: 2.40KB / sec
Information transfer speed: > 1KB / sec
Range: approximately 1 km with 100mW TPO in an urban area with the standard antenna. With better antennas and less obstacles in the path you can reach 5-6km.
When to use RATS?
RATS is suitable for encrypted short-range communication when you want to be independent of internet and / or mobile networks. It is also a suitable option to use between buildings that have no prior communication solution. Another big plus with RATS is that communication can be maintained even if the power goes out as long as you have power in your laptop.
December 2013, just a month before our first rocket launch and we had no suitable communication system for mission control. The software and hardware I developed during that month became the basis for RATS.
Risks and challenges
Small-scale production of RATS devices has already started, so the biggest risk would be that my electronics suppliers are unable to deliver all of the components if demand proves to be higher than estimated.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
