A group of residents in the rural area of West Marin established an organic community garden just one year ago building the basic needs for gardening. Now we are ready for Phase II and that is building a Common Area. The Common Area is where we will hold educational activities about permaculture, organic gardening, water conservation, plants, food, cooking, as well as herbal traditions. We have within our membership a diverse group of experienced members, some of whom are educators specializing in natural sciences, builders, herbalists, and landscapers. We are a non-profit organization.
Project Goals: We have plotted a space in our garden layout to include a central gathering area where we can meet for many activities. Our goal is to break ground this month on this project. We need to grade the hillside, provide seating, irrigation for surround plants, gathering tables for meetings as well as a shade structure. There needs to be pathways for are easy to access for seniors. We have also factored in the cost of equipment rental and labor to operate the equipment for construction. Finally a large harvest tables required for the outdoor classroom workshops.
Why Back our Garden?: Our mission is to share our sense of community that we have built through gardening and sharing our knowledge of organic gardening with the greater community. Our excess food that is grown is donated to the local community food bank. We have a diverse group from different economic background. And for some of the families and seniors we sponsor their membership. We believe everyone has assets to give to the community.
COMMUNITY: The response from the community has been overwhelmingly supportive. Several leaders in the community have given us positive support in so many ways to make this dream come true. They agree there is a need for such a site as the community garden. Accountability: We have established leadership roles in our group that oversees the basic organizational needs of the group. They have designated roles covering the treasury, community outreach, membership relations and director. We will post our progress on this site and share success with you as donors.
Risks and challenges
The unique challenge we may have with this project is garnering the attention of the greater community right away that we will have this space available to share knowledge about gardening. Not many community gardens provide this service. Our goal is to attract experts beyond our membership in the field of permaculture, herbal medicines, healthy cooking and of course organic gardening.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
