About

Experience dangerous car racing vicariously through me!

I started driving competitively a few years ago with slow and safe autocross. Then I did some moderately dangerous driving on road racing tracks, with an instructor in the car and strict rules for passing. And this year I was invited to join a Chump car team! Despite the fact that wheel-to-wheel road racing in crappy old cars with a bunch of crazy rednecks is a really stupid, dangerous idea, I'm so excited!!! This project is to take you along on my journey by documenting my first race in February with video and a photo book.

The car

We bought a 20-year-old BMW and have been working on the weekends to get it ready for the 2015 racing season. Between now and the race, I'll send out updates of the car build process, the gear and equipment, and more information about how you can get involved in affordable car racing.

Our 2015 race season

We'll be racing in the ChumpCar World Series and 24 Hours of LeMons - low-cost, wheel-to-wheel, endurance road racing series with crappy cars, ridiculous themes, and partying - at Barber Motorsports Park, Carolina Motorsports Park, and Virginia International Raceway. It will look something like this (hopefully less in the grass):

And this promotional video by ChumpCar gives you a real feel for the crazy racing atmosphere:

Our first race will be a LeMons 7-7 in Birmingham, AL (Barber Motorsports Park), February 6-7, 2015. That's seven hours of straight driving on the first day, then stop for the night, then another seven hours the second day. This project is to document the race.

The team

I'm grateful and excited for the learning opportunity this Chump car team is providing. My teammates (Steve Remchak, Mitch Moore, and Larry Hamaker) are seasoned veterans of crapcan racing, they know all the rules/personalities/quirks of the two race series we'll be doing, two are track instructors, one seems to know *everything* about BMW 3 series, two are proficient with electronics, and I'm being exposed to a wider group of people who are excellent mechanics, welders, and creative fabricators. I'm looking forward to improving my driving and mechanic skills, and this is part of the story I'm telling.

The costs

I'm already in deep on the car, so I'm counting just the cost of attending the race I'll document via video and photo book. The breakdown is: $300 for my share of the entry fee and $125 for my share of the fuel.

Why do you care?

I have always loved to drive. (See my bio for how I got started in competitive driving.) There are not very many women in racing, but I'd love to see that change.  Let me show you my journey, and maybe inspire a few of you to follow! It's never too late to do something thrilling!

Risks and challenges

This is a bucket list item for me, so I'm going to make it happen regardless. And since I'm so excited about it, I will document it from start to finish. There's no guarantee we will finish the race, of course - cars wreck and break all the time. It's all part of the process, and you can witness it all.

In the unlikely but possible event that I die in a fiery crash, I've arranged for a friend to create and send out the rewards.
