These enormous books collect 1500+ pages of the absurdist, story-driven comic series, from the taxi cab-driving beginnings to the climactic showdown at Sin Tower. If you've never read Sam and Fuzzy before, you can learn more about it below, or check it out online right now. But reading it online is a pale surrogate for sultry paper between your fingers; what you really want is a massive, two volume omnibus print collection. I want that, too!
The Sam and Fuzzy Omnibus is available in five increasingly bourgeois flavours:
WHAT IF WE RAISE EXTRA MONEY?
Holy cow! You guys funded the heck out of this project. It is truly astounding just how much crazy stuff we have been able to add to this project. Thanks to you, we can now dare to dream of your two most requested stretch goal additions: slipcases for the hardcover sets, and an expansive author commentary and concept art section.
ARE THERE OTHER REWARDS TO GET, TOO?
You bet there are!
THE GILDED BONUS PACK contains a Kickstarter-exclusive 9 x 12 print of every major character that appears in the first seven years of the comic, plus a set of three buttons. Available on its own or in the "GILDED" version of any of the book tiers.
THE AVATAR tier nets you a custom-made digital headshot-style image of you, or a character, to use on whatever horribly invasive social media sites your heart desires. It doesn't have to be your terrible Sonic fan character. (But it can be!)
THE COMMISSIONER (OF FATE?) tier scores you an custom-drawn 8.5 x 11" original marker piece drawn by me, featuring up to three characters. Alternately, THE ENLARGED COMMISSIONER tier nabs you a larger custom 11 x 14 piece with up to four characters.
With either option, you can choose the subject (portrait, pin-up, parody, etc.) and the characters (fictional character, real people, friends, family, pets, arch nemesis). Or you can let fate pick for you and get an incredible and/or disturbing surprise. (The role of fate will be played by me, a 20-sided die, and this chart.)
THE COLLECTOR tiers will let two folks nab one of the two HUGE, one-of-a-kind original pen-and-ink art pieces that were used for the Omnibus' covers (8.4" by 24") and the original cast portrait (19" x 24").
And for the true die-hard supporter, THE SKETCHBOOK COLLECTOR tier earns the rarest swag I have: one of my actual original sketchbooks! Each containing at least 25 pages of original Sam and Fuzzy comic artwork, concept sketches and other random drawings. I have never sold my original comic art before, so you can (and should!) ask for the sketchbook that contains a particular favourite Sam and Fuzzy comic strip.
All my existing books and shirts in the graph below can be added to your order a la carte. (Which is French for... a la carte.) Just pick the reward tier you want, then add the appropriate value of the extra swag you'd like to get. When the campaign is over, we'll ask you which shirts/books you wanted. Easy!
OK, SO TELL ME MORE ABOUT THESE BOOKS
They are huge!
The "Mammoth" standard set has trade dress similar to my existing books. The cover art of both books connects to form a single image. Did you know you could do that? No one will stop you.
For the more discerning fan, the "Behemoth" Limited Edition hardcover and "Monolith" Artist Edition hardcover sets have a more refined, subdued appearance, and a cover art design loaded with cameos drawn from Sam and Fuzzy's rich history. The two-part design of the standard edition is still present on the spine.
All versions, standard and hardcover, have spines designed to align with and compliment all my existing books. I am here to enhance your bookshelf, not screw it up!
WHAT IS THE STORY ABOUT?
Sam is a well-meaning but gutless drop-out stuck in a dead-end job. But when he befriends a scheming bear named Fuzzy, he finds himself transformed into a veritable weirdness magnet. As Sam is drawn into an increasingly absurd conspiracy of warring mafioso ninjas, evil record executives, and secret underground societies, he's forced to either take charge of his life or be crushed underfoot.
I spent seven years of my life drawing this story, and my goal is to archive it as definitively as possible. I love books that let you see how an artist developed over time, and that's what I want to make here for you.
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?
Printing professional, high-quality books of such a massive length is a serious undertaking. Most of the goal will cover manufacturing the books and rewards, freighting them to us and then mailing them to you. The rest covers the only two sure things in life: Kickstarter fees and taxes. It's a tight budget, but I did the math. (Repeatedly.)
WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH THE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING?
There is no getting around it. Because this set is over six times the size and weight of a regular book, the cost of international shipping is hefty. (It's actually even more than what we are charging.)
As a Canadian myself, I really wanted to do something to help out. So: I am subsidizing some of the international shipping cost out of my own pocket. I'm also pricing the books themselves as inexpensively as possible, and offering an ebook version for folks on a budget. Thank you, international readers, for your continued support and understanding in the face of a cruel postal system. I will do my best to earn it!
WHO ARE YOU, ANYWAY?
I'm Sam Logan, the author of Sam and Fuzzy. (And despite the name, I am not actually the basis for the "Sam" character in the comic in any way! Talk about poor planning.) In addition to Sam and Fuzzy, you can find my work at Skull Panda, in the back issues of children's magazines like YES Mag and KNOW, on t-shirts sold through Topatoco, and (eventually) in the pages of To Be or Not to Be.
I am from Canada, which is why my American partners at Make That Thing are running my Kickstarter for me. I love the power Kickstarter gives independent creators, and have backed a number of other cool projects with my personal account.
OK, THIS ALL SOUNDS GOOD: LET'S DO THIS!
Thank you. And I really, really mean that. Let's do this thing, and do it right!
Risks and challenges
I'm making this book with the help of Make That Thing. It's a subsidiary of TopatoCo – my partner in producing and shipping Sam and Fuzzy books and other merchandise for nearly ten years. This is the largest project we have ever undertaken together. But with years of book-making experience under our belts, I am confident we will produce it on time, to a high standard of quality, and with minimal fatalities.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
