Hello! We are Amy Dolan and Fiona Purves, two small business owners from Edinburgh and we are on a mission. And to complete this mission, we need your help!
Both of our businesses will turn one year old in May, and to celebrate this, we would like to showcase all our products under one roof, in the form of our very own Pop-Up Shop.
But first of all, let us properly introduce ourselves:
Amy is the owner of furniture redesign business Ziggy Sawdust. She rescues old, forgotten pieces of vintage and retro furniture and gives them a new lease of life through lots of TLC and fun blocks of colour. Amy recently won BT Scotland’s Young Entrepreneur Award for ‘Most Environmentally Resopnsible Business’ as Ziggy Sawdust is all about saving beautiful, solid pieces of furniture from heading to landfill sites. (You can find out more here: www.ziggysawdust.co.uk)
Fiona is the owner of stationery business Paper Aeroplane. She uses her colourful and playful hand-drawn illustrations and lettering to create cards and prints to be treasured forever. Through her designs, Fiona wishes to help save sending notes and thoughtful messages in the post from becoming a thing of the past. All Paper Aeroplane goods are printed on 100% Recycled card and paper. (You can find out more here: www.paper-aeroplane.co.uk)
Although our products are very different in terms of materials and scale, what lies at the heart of our businesses is the same. We share a love for fun, sentimentality, colour, design and sustainability. We would like to bring Ziggy Sawdust and Paper Aeroplane’s full ranges together to fully showcase what we do, so people can get the full essence of what both businesses are truly about!
We are both art school graduates who, in the midst of this recession, have decided to take our fate into our own hands and create our dream jobs for ourselves. Within the space of a year, we have both achieved some rather exciting success and recognition, but the reality of the situation is that we both have day jobs on top of running our own businesses, which often means working seven days a week to keep everything afloat.
We have booked out a gallery in the city center of Edinburgh called Whitespace and will open the doors from Saturday 25th – Wednesday 29th May. Booking alone was a big commitment and we have really taken a giant leap of faith in YOU to help us make this happen!
We don’t want to simply put our products in this gallery space. As its name implies, the venue really is just a big (all be it, lovely!) white space. We want to make creative, visual displays of our products so people think: “Wow, these girls really know their stuff!” We want to show you what we’re made of!
We have also put the pressure on ourselves to host an official invite-only opening event on Friday 24th of May, to which we wish to invite local designers, bloggers, the press, shop owners… and if you help us reach our target, you will be personally invited too!
Every donation will be met with a thoughtful reward, delivered straight to your door. Have a look in the right hand column for more details ☞
By making this pop-up shop a success, we wish to start our second year in business in a truly positive way and use it as a platform to reach a wider audience. The first year of trading is notoriously the hardest, and we think the fact that we are still here is something worth celebrating! And hopefully, this time next year, we'll be celebrating the fact that we can both work full time on our businesses!
So that's it! Keep checking our collaborative Facebook page Ziggy Aeroplane for all the details, and we will be so grateful if you can help us make this happen!

Risks and challenges
As we mentioned, we have booked out a gallery in the city center of Edinburgh called Whitespace from Saturday 25th – Wednesday 29th May.
Although this is the first time we have organised a project of this size, we have a strong network of connections to draw on and are confident that we can make this pop-up shop a fantastic success.
We are both more than experienced in completing projects within strict time constraints, and working under pressure is how we work best! We know that things do not always go according to plan, but with our skills, know-how, patience (... and good sense of humour!), we are great believers in the age old adage, 'Where there's a will, there's a way!'Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
