There was an idea. The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people, see if they could become something more...
No. Wait. That's The Avengers I'm thinking of there. Scratch that.
It did start with an idea though. A much more humble one though. The idea was to turn up to the UK System Open with something really cool to hand to my opponents, and maybe have a few to sell for beer money afterwards. After some pondering (and seeing someone's really cool business card) I decided I liked the idea of etched metal alt-arts. It was something new, something I hadn't seen before, and something people would probably like. Coincidentally at the same time I spotted someone on the UK X-Wing Facebook group asking if anyone had any leads on making metal cards. Evidently I was not the only person to have this idea. So I contacted this stranger, Louis, and we agreed that pooling our resources was the way to go for a small run of cards.
So, we came up with a couple of designs each, contacted a few companies and waited. And resubmitted our designs. And waited some more. And tweaked the designs again. And waited. Then got told they couldn't be done the week of the Open. Then tried to find somewhere else. Then waited some more. Then the week after the Open discovered that, no, actually the cards had been produced, would you still like them?
We said yes. Obviously.
So we ended up with a pile of cards each, which we popped onto the various swap and sell groups and discovered there was a real market for. One thing led to another and someone suggested I do a Kickstarter to try and do a run of these, one design for each faction currently in the game.
So, here's the plan- One double sided card for each faction (Rebels, Empire, Scum, Resistance, First Order, Republic and Separatists), each featuring a ship blueprint, with one side being a generic pilot for that ship, the other a named pilot.
The current selection of ships / pilots is-
Rebels: T-65 X-Wing. Luke Skywalker / Red Squadron Veteran.
Empire: TIE Advanced x1. Darth Vader / Tempest Squadron Pilot.
Scum: Fang Fighter. Fenn Rau / Zealous Recruit.
Resistance: T-70 X-Wing. Poe Dameron / Red Squadron Expert.
First Order: TIE / SF. Quickdraw / Zeta Squadron Survivor.
Republic: Delta 7 Aethersprite. Anakin Skywalker / Jedi Knight.
Separatists: Sith Infiltrator. Darth Maul / Dark Courier.
I will send out a questionnaire once the campaign is complete so that everyone gets the correct cards for the factions they want. I'll write it in my calendar and everything so I don't forget.
I am Kickstarting this because I'm a stay at home dad whose only source of income is selling occasional lit ships to people, so I don't have the capital to get this off the ground myself. Hopefully by doing this, I can not only get this run of cards made and shipped out, but have enough that I can then fund a second wave, and possibly make this a self-sustaining enterprise.
Stretch goals I suppose?
So, if this reaches 150%% funding (£1,500) I'll do up a double sided generic upgrade, and everyone will get one. Not 100% sure on what it will be, but something useful like a hull and shield upgrade.
If it gets to 200% (£2,000) then everyone gets a double sided, metal, shitty Paint alt art card.
Something like this, only monochrome, and not that. But fun, and silly.
Risks and challenges
The main risk is not meeting the reward deadline because of production delays in the planning stages. I hope to alleviate this possibility by having designs made up and approved by the etching company before the project reaches it's deadline.
Obviously the other risk is Disney and / or Fantasy Flight coming down on me like the fist of an angry god and smashing my little project into the ground. Honestly, if that happens I just shrug and walk away. If it's been funded then everyone gets their money back. I'll be honest though, a little project like this, for something that doesn't actively infringe on any of their existing products is unlikely to draw their ire.
