I’m preparing to do One More Record. I have a home project studio so I'm producing and recording more music than ever, but the process of producing and releasing a complete album of songs is challenging and becoming obsolete, but thanks to the prodding of my friends David Clemmer (chemist/songwriter extraordinaire) and Don Richmond (national musical treasure/southwestern icon extraordinaire) I've assembled a crack band and am heading back into the studio the first week of February with an eye on a June 2015 release. It’s been fourteen years since my last full blown studio release, although my friend Patrick Turnmire helped me spit out a valiant effort in 2009 to help pay down uninsured medical expenses when I shattered my left femur. What a guy.
I will revisit and reinvent some earlier songs on this new project that will get a chance to be heard by thousands more people and I’ll add some new material to the song list. Expect string sections, woodwinds, horns, lots of voices… things I couldn't manage in the past due to budget and time constraints, but that the songs have asked for. The core of the record will be recorded in Colorado in the majestic San Luis Valley with the trusty Don Richmond at Howlin' Dog Records. My long time pals John Michel and Michael Jude, from the band Brother's Keeper and the John Oates’s Band will join me as the rhythm section to assemble the backbone of the record. The amazing and world renowned Grammy winner Paul Buckmaster whose work you've all heard on Elton John's early records as well as those of David Bowie, Harry Nilsson, Train, The Rolling Stones and many more has agreed to do some orchestrations if the stars align. Getting to know Paul has been a true highlight of my career. There's no one quite like Paul Buckmaster and I hold him, his work and his ideas in the highest regard. Other parts of the record will be recorded with: Best friend and legendary songwriter Ellis Paul, legendary producer/player/friend Grammy winner Lloyd Maines in Austin (Dixie Chicks, Terri Hendrix), with renowned jazz pal Mike McGinnis in NYC, rock/jazz/ horn man/singer-songwriter pal Bill Kahler in Atlanta and Nashville string player hotshot Tim Lorsch (Kris Kristofferson, Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban). Also on the roster are Native American rocker friend/Grammy winner Bill Miller from Nashville and renowned songsters Jimmy LaFave and Eliza Gylkeson from Austin. Part of this business is about dreaming and imagining what could be and to that extent I have to ask… Keb Mo, are you out there? I need you brother!
I'll be doing a lot of the layering work myself in my project studio known as ‘Studio 13' altho on a day riddled with technical problems it's also known as "The Torture Chamber". It's been three difficult years learning to record, mix, edit and master starting out with little more than a desk, a laptop and a keyboard. I can thank good friend Abe Guthrie for getting me past the first soul crushing roadblocks and later Glenn Harvitz in Abuiqui, NM. Also large thanks to best friend Ellis Paul as well as Dustin Overbeek and SONiA for trusting me with my first professional long distance session gigs. On SONiA’s project I got to work with producer/engineer Mike Poole who had just finished working on Robert Plant’s newest project. Great company to keep. I started out recording in Cubase then migrated to Pro Tools and sometimes work in Logic... all very impressive recording environments... but I've found true love and a happy home recording in Studio One V2 Pro and I have the kind and brilliant folks at PreSonus to thank. They generously gifted me with Studio One V2 Pro and their music notation package Notion 5. I also have my music digitally available through their subsidiary, Nimbit. You can listen to and download both HD WAV files as well as High Res MP3 files there.

Also… to stream/listen, hear interviews, watch videos, see pics and discover a community of amazing artists I highly recommend the Standing O Project. This is a creative online movement where artists offer their work and special insights, directly connecting to their audiences:
I've asked some of my famous friends to jump into the fray, but being famous can really restrict your movements and it's unsure who will actually be able to jump in when the time comes. So far I have 'Yes"s from Ellis Paul, Bill Miller, Eliza Gilkyson, Kevin Welch, Abe and hopefully Arlo Guthrie, SONiA, and am in the process of reaching out to Keb Mo and Robert Mirabal. Taos boasts some serious badasses from around the planet and I'll be recruiting my friends Jimmy Stadler, Bob Andrews (Graham Parker and the Rumour), K Bolan (The Damn Band/Don Conoscenti Band), Mina Tank (The Damn Band/Vanilla Rawk), Patrick Turnmire (Don Conoscenti Band), Greg Thum (Proximal Distally//Vanilla Rawk/Vanilla Pop), Mark Dudrow and Jennifer Peterson (Jennifer Peterson Band). The mastering will be done in Los Angeles or in Boston by Neale Eckstein. To do a Grammy worthy record (a guy can dream, right?) is costly and so here I am hat in hand. Heather Sparrow has applied her immense and beautifully twisted talents to a 5 minute silent movie for this Kickstarter campaign and her amazing still images will grace the CD cover and subsequent promotional materials. I feel a T-Shirt coming on. Heather lives about a mile from me here in Taos which is one of the primary characters in the movie. If making the record is as fun as working with Heather I have good times ahead.
The music business has changed dramatically since my last major release and without a booking agent and promotional team there's no way I can tour like I used to. Without that avenue to spread the word from town to town I'll need to hire radio promotion and publicity experts. I'm looking at a $25,000 to $30,000 price tag for that stuff alone. It'll take another $30,000 to $40,000 to actually record, orchestrate, mix and master the record. Add in the video costs, incentives, travel expenses and other extraneous costs and you can see the size of the rock as well as the mountain I plan to push it up. It's all on me and I intend to get it done and done well. I hope you can help spread the word and the love. It would be greatly appreciated.
I’ll get the bulk of the rewards out in January… anything that's not tied to the album's release date. The Concert, Lessons and Studio related rewards will have to be scheduled one on one by emailing me. That will obviously be complicated, but we'll work through it and get those things done. It'll be fun. Meanwhile I have a couple of challenging, but curable health issues to tackle as I prepare for recording to begin the first week of February. I’ve seen and overcome worse. That’s the life of an artist. No sick days. No vacation pay. No surrender. After basic tracks I’ll work steadily through the rest of the winter and spring to make the best record of my life and give you back something you can be truly proud to be part of. Now back to you. Peace and Love from Taos
P.S. My apologies for typos, misspellings (Ram Dass, John Edward) and any other errors. Of the thousands of moving parts it took to put all of this together there are fewer mistakes than I anticipated, but I'm still sorry!

Risks and challenges
S**t Happens. I've been making records for a long time and I know that as well as anybody which is why I tend to pad my deadlines. I've never failed to complete a project. I'm usually on time or early and occasionally under budget. As investors you will be in good hands with me in the Producer's Chair. That said, sometimes the greater success of a project's release comes from altering the release date. That was certainly the case with this Kickstarter campaign which was originally planned to begin a month earlier. If for some reason a June release becomes a liability to the success of this record (and any possible Grammy consideration) you'll be the first to know. Meanwhile any rewards that aren't specifically tied to the record's release will be honored in a timely fashion. One possible delay would be Paul Buckmaster's schedule for orchestrations. If Paul has a Katie Perry project or another hit by Train to attend to I'll have to wait for him to become available. Also, some of the rewards (lessons, sessions, concerts) will have scheduling challenges on both sides of cyberspace and we'll work together to nail them down. I keep my word and I read my emails. All of them. If you don't get a response from me within 10 to 12 days it may not have reached me. Please try again! You will get a reply.
