The Trailer

The Story

DRIVING NOT KNOWING is a film about looking for a home. You may not find one, but you keep looking anyway. Sharing a feeling of uprootedness, the characters never quite feel comfortable in their own skin, as they circle and dance around each other in attempts to feel accepted and loved. Entertaining yet stark and unforgivingly honest, it’s a movie that openly explores the inevitability of change and separation through the strained bonds of male friendship, sex, and love.

Dane Mainella and Jay Jadick play artists, Will and Lee, at odds yet addicted to each other. Lee, a drug-addled yet sensitive musician, is in love with Will, an ambitious poet. Violent and intense, Will is hesitant to make himself vulnerable to Lee’s affection. After a year-long estrangement that arose from their disharmonious intentions for one another, the two reunite for a weekend in the countryside.

Why This Story?

The film – semi-autobiographical – places some of our own personal storylines within interesting, fictional scenarios. Since we filmed the movie during the summer before our final year of college, the weight of this transitional period strongly influenced the story itself. We found ourselves approaching the ‘real world’, not knowing exactly how to negotiate this inevitable change in our lives. What would we be doing in a year? Who would still be a part of our lives? Would everything be okay? In a way, this film is our response to these questions.

DRIVING NOT KNOWING is also a love letter to the place and the people we grew up with. For many of us, this place was Jay’s family-run farm in Northeastern Pennsylvania. It was where we initially developed a passion for watching and making movies and music. During Jay and Ben’s time at UPenn and Temple in Philadelphia, they met like-minded friends and collaborators Dane and Dylan. Since our meeting, the four of us have pushed each other and collaborated on making narrative, experimental, and documentary short films, often incorporating the countryside that Ben and Jay introduced to us. Because our connection to the place is full of memories of growing up, of nostalgic longing, of a return to simpler times, we thought that it would serve as the perfect setting for our story of Will and Lee.

The movie also has a large grounding in poetry. The dialogue and imagery within the movie are steeped in the poetry that inspires us as filmmakers.

How We Made It This Far

We began pre-production on the film in March 2013, formulating a rough outline of the story and immersing our main actors in the world they would be living. We then assembled the perfect cast and crew who not only felt as passionate about the project as us, but were willing to take it beyond our own vision. These amazing people brought the story to life in a way we never could have anticipated! A true collaboration of friends and colleagues made this film possible.

Production began in June 2013, with principal photography (a series of isolated weekend trips to the sprawling mountain countryside) ending in August. Soon after, post-production began with intensive editing and musical scoring sessions. Since then we have constantly been working to make sure that every cut and scene embodies and strengthens the world of the film.

The four of us had our hands in every step of the filmmaking process, from conception to completion. Ben and Dylan framed the action while Jay and Dane guided the progression of the scenes in their performances. Using simple yet innovative DIY tactics, we were able to successfully produce a culturally relevant and personally resonant feature-length film.

The entire DRIVING NOT KNOWING team has poured their hearts and souls into this project, and we've gotten it so close to the finish line. It was the most challenging experience of our young lives, but also the most rewarding. Up to this point, we’ve been coming up with the money to fund the film in true independent fashion: out of our own pockets and with the help of a few awards and grants. The majority of the cast and crew donated their time, best efforts, and love to this project. Without them, there would be no film. Now we’re reaching out to you to help us bring our story to people all over the world. We need your support. Please help us take these last few steps.

Why We Need Your Help

$21,170 is the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM amount we need to get the film finished. In order for our movie to be considered for film festivals, and eventually distributed (in theaters, on Netflix, DVD, iTunes, OnDemand, Amazon, etc.), we need to design, mix, and all-around perfect the sound and color of the picture.

Sound Design - $12,500
The sound of a movie is just as important as its picture! We need to re-record dialogue, add sound effects, develop soundscapes, fine tune the soundtrack, and mix and master the entire film so it can play in full professional, theater surround sound.

Color Correction - $5,040
We need to enhance the color of the images so our footage can flow visually. This will heighten the quality of our storytelling. Shooting in the rural woods of Northeastern Pennsylvania, we captured some truly amazing colors that deserve this treatment.

Additional Costs - $3,630
There are also a bunch more costs that come along with finishing the film! We need to pay for what are called "deliverables." These are the finishing costs of the film (copyrights, music rights, legal fees, prints, dvds). We also need to put money towards professional graphic design work for the film’s website, advertising, and overall presentation.

Stretch Goals

$21,170 pays for everything that we need to get the film to festivals. BUT, we want to bring the film to the whole world!

$24,000: This money would go towards creating, printing, and shipping materials for festivals (posters, cards, dvds etc.) as well as building and funding our graphic design team so that we can develop our image and reach as many people as possible.
$30,000: We would use these additional donations to pay for renting theater spaces nationally and bringing DRIVING NOT KNOWING to cities across the country! We would also be able to pay for travel to film festivals so that we can personally bring the movie around the world.
$40,000: We are set. If we can raise $40,000 we would be able to fund the movie's life after film festivals. Legal fees, insurance, theater rentals, travel, and all of the other costs that are required for giving our movie a life of its own!

Grateful and resolute,

Benjamin R. Davis, Dylan Hansen-Fliedner, Jay Jadick, and Dane Mainella

Risks and challenges

The best part is that this is a FINISHED FILM! We’ve filmed and edited it. You aren’t donating to a shot in the dark. We have everything lined up to bring this movie to you as long as we reach our budget. The biggest risks to making a film come during production, and that’s already behind us!

The worst risk we face is not raising this money! If we don’t reach our goal, we get nothing. All of our costs have been pre-negotiated, so as long as we reach our goal we can bring DRIVING NOT KNOWING to you and to festivals around the world! And if we reach our stretch goals we can take the film even further to homes and theaters around the world. But in order to do that, we NEED to reach our goal.
