About this project
On April 21, 2013, The City Choir of Washington will present the world premiere performance of two new works by Sir John Tavener, Three Poems of George Herbert and Tolstoy's Creed, at the Washington National Cathedral. In honor of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, the concert will also feature works that were performed at her 1953 coronation.
We are an organization with BIG aspirations this season. A generous benefactor commissioned and paid for a new work by the British composer Sir John Tavener on behalf of our choir. We humbly and gratefully accepted, but with a huge gulp. The performance of this work will force us to use up our existing capital and possibly put the future existence of the choir in jeopardy. We don't want that to happen! The Washington National Cathedral will be a new performance space for us, and we're excited about the concert we will be presenting. We are hoping we can raise the amount needed to pay the rental fee for the 2nd largest cathedral in the United States for this special concert.
With your help and if we are incredibly fortunate to surpass our initial funding goal, [It looks like we did, 10 days early, thanks to YOU!] our stretch goals would be to raise additional funds needed to pay for the orchestra and soloists. Beyond that, maybe we could collect even more toward a potential recording. It's up to YOU! Did I mention that we have BIG aspirations this season? Check out Update no. 5 on the UPDATES tab above our project page for an outline of our stretch goals to raise additional funds for the orchestra.
If you are a fan of choral music, please share this campaign with all your music-loving friends and be a part of bringing a world premiere to life! Contribute a little or a lot. Spread the word on Facebook or Twitter!

For any performance of live music, concert ticket sales alone do not fully cover the costs of performance. In addition to renting the hall, there are program printing costs, additional marketing costs and, most importantly, paying for the wonderful professional soloists and orchestra musicians.
Risks and challenges
The additional costs of the performance for this concert beyond our regular bare-bones budget is daunting. The show will go on, but we want to ensure that the City Choir of Washington organization has the funds necessary not only to cover costs of the National Cathedral venue, but also to afford continued robust existence of our organization and the further growth of our fan base. Our singers are talented, dedicated, and motivated to get things done, and we'll do whatever we can to make this world premiere event a success. If we don't raise our $20,000 goal, none of our contributors will be charged any of their pledged amounts. Reaching our funding goal will help us breathe easier and good breathing is essential for an excellent choir!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
