About

QUIERO is a talk show webseries connecting you to Latinx who have unapologetically carved out spaces for their ambitions to thrive. People whose innate Truth includes being Latinx, and how that truth translates to their chosen path. With QUIERO, we discover how our guests are building their own empires and asserting their place within the American Dream.

Having already produced three full episodes, we will premiere on February 15th, prior to the end of our Kickstarter (March 1st). QUIERO has the momentum — but we need you to keep it going! With the success of this Kickstarter, we will be able to produce 10 episodes of 50 minutes each, releasing Thursday mornings on YouTube as a visual talk show and on iTunes as a podcast.

Latinx are taught to be grateful. No matter how recent or distant our migration, we are supposed to be grateful that we were allowed past the border and ushered into our assimilation. It is our hunger that brought us to America, and it is our hunger that is asked to be erased, forgotten, and replaced with gratitude.

QUIERO will engage that hunger once again by creating access to stories of Latinx ambition, influence, and success. We want to bring forward the idea of #LatinXcellence into the popular imagination, and expose what being Latinx really means. “Latino” is an American term born from white people’s misunderstanding of who we are. While we ache to identify with our vastly different motherlands, we only survive if we demand space as a diverse, yet cohesive, American subgroup. And today, the stories that portray us are simply not enough. The Univisions of the world appeal to our abuelas, while we’re all screaming in Spanglish for more Jane the Virgins.

I was raised in a hungry household. I was born in Colombia, the youngest and only daughter to a Neurosurgeon turned hot-shot politician and his French award-winning Neurologist wife. While my father lead the Senate, my mother was in the lab discovering Alzheimer inducing proteins in the brain. Hunger was as genetic as it was mandatory in my family, and should I need more role models to support my fire, the Holy Trinity of Shakira, Juanes, and Sofia Vergara could always receive my prayers. Colombians could and Colombians did, and our hunger was immensely celebrated. And then, my family moved to the US.

A plane ride later and we were Latinos. Minorities? I thought we were Colombian. Forget your Empire and fit this mold, which will remain muddy and undefined.

But remember to be grateful.

Fast forward thirteen years, and I was the first Latina to graduate from my Directing program. This meant both prestige and isolation – I cold-emailed every Latino whose success story I could find. To my surprise, they welcomed me with open arms. Turns out, we’re aware of our need for legacy, for tools to be passed on.

Now at twenty-five, I’ve rejected the grateful Latino narrative and let my hunger drive me to Broadway, to major entertainment agencies, into Academy-Award winning rooms, to addiction, blurred lines, and even recovery. I still hunger for the same representation that was so available to me as a child, the success my DNA has me predisposed to. In these rooms, I’ve learned to take up space often as the only woman, and the only Hispanic person. But I’m still looking for guidance. With QUIERO, I want to build the tool that I so sincerely crave. Latinx success stories to be told in one place, in a very personal way, with someone’s story that I recognize at the helm. I want to build the show for someone whose unapologetic hunger matches mine.

We need Latinx visibility more than ever. Despite representing 17.6 % of the population, our security in the United States is still precarious. We continue to endure xenophobia from our fellow Americans as we watch our numbers grow. In 2016, Hispanic buying power grew .6%, reaching 1.4 trillion dollars, whereas non-Hispanic sales actually decreased by .7% — in other words, we are the cornerstone of any growing industry. Diversity initiatives in entertainment are about more than just representation and political correctness, they’re an economic necessity.

Latinx are aching for conversations that invite them, and I’m ready to do the work. The only way to combat attacks on our community and assert our place in this country is to unveil the empire we have already built.

Since I set foot in America, Tony Robbins has fed my to-do lists, as Gabby Bernstein has healed my destruction. But where are the Latinos in the self-development space? At its essence, Self-Development is what QUIERO is about.

A helpful comparison is Marie Forleo, where she speaks to leading influencers across industries about how their personal needs built the brands they run, and in turn, how those brands continue to influence their lives. I want to use that equation to build the brand of #LatinXcellence. How has your truth, your Latinidad, and however you define that, built your personal empire? How did you turn your grateful narrative into hunger? QUIERO is the perfect mash-up between Marie Forleo and Latino USA.

While we won’t give it away just yet, rest assured that our confirmed line-up for Season 1 includes some of your favorite Latinx actors, National Medal of Arts recipients, Academy Award winning writers, comedians, Influential Dreamers, Emmy winners, groundbreaking executives, amongst others.

In conversation, we delve deeply into the lives of Latinx who have effectively capitalized on American markets, traded in the narrative of being grateful, and taken their power back – and in that way, QUIERO brings total visibility to Latinx hunger.

Risks and challenges

While a straight forward production, Quiero remains a massive undertaking. Starting February 15th, we will be releasing weekly 50 mins episodes on both YouTube and iTunes (as podcasts). Without funding, it would be almost impossible for us to deliver on time, which would put us at risk with our followers and weaken the community's trust in our product.
