HELP US PUT YOU TO SLEEP! (that sounds wrong, but you get our drift)
Hey friends, thank you for showing up here on our Kickstarter page!
We are Edie Carey and Sarah Sample -- songwriters/tour buddies/mamas -- and we are joining forces to make a beautiful album of lullabies and songs of comfort. We have always flirted with the idea of making an album together, and now that we find ourselves in a similar season of life (aka sleep-deprived and covered in spit up), it feels like the right time. We have both been able to stay active in our musical communities after having little ones, but we have noticed that the time we have to sit and write songs in a quiet room for hours has drastically decreased. Instead, melodies for new songs come floating in when we least expect, like while sitting in a rocking chair or pushing a stroller or chopping a banana into eleventy small pieces.
We wanted to create a collection of songs that are soothing not just for your infant or child, but for someone of any age. We have put together some of our own original tunes, songs that our parents sang to us when we were tiny, and the lullaby-ified versions of some of our favorite tunes. We are really excited about this collection and hope you will love it, too. We are recording with the oh-so-talented producer Scott Wiley at June Audio Studio this winter.
As you know, the record industry has drastically changed in the last decade. Independent musicians now face paying the steep upfront costs of making an album completely out of pocket. I once heard a prominent folk singer say "there are hundreds of dollars to be made in folk music." That's pretty funny, but it is true that it is difficult to make ends meet being a touring musician. We have both made records leaning on credit cards before and then spending two years touring to pay off the cost. We have done pre-order campaigns in the past which so many of you have been a part of (THANK YOU!), but we think Kickstarter is a much easier, simpler, and more interactive way for your guys to hop on board. No mailing in checks, no navigating Paypal. We would be honored to have you act as our grassroots record label -- and frankly, we trust you guys way more than the most of the other kind of record labels. This is why it has become so important for singer/songwriters like us to be able to rely on the support of listeners like you to help us finance music in the creative stage through pre-sales and patronage. As Kickstarter backers, you'll hear the music before anyone else, receive periodic updates and, most importantly, be an ESSENTIAL part of the making of the record.
MAKING OF THE RECORD
In order to be able to make this record, we're hoping to raise a minimum of $15,000 to help cover the basic costs. This money will go a long way in helping to pay for:

*Mixing & mastering
*Artwork & duplication costs

SHARING IS CARING!
We only have 30 days to reach this $15,000 goal, so we greatly appreciate anything you can do to help spread the word, whether it's reposting on FACEBOOK and TWITTER, sending an EMAIL to your friends and family, mentioning it in your BLOG, covering your neighborhood in flyers, using a megaphone on the street corner, etc. We are so grateful for any help in getting the word out. Thank you so much for sharing!
The costs of making a record, distributing it, and publicity usually run upwards of $25,000. In the event that we are able to surpass the initial goal, we've also made some stretch goals that will allow us to go beyond just making the record. If we can reach these goals, there will be additional items included in some of the thank you packages.
Stretch Goal #1 -- $20,000
With a budget of $20,000, we will be able to pay for some of the other things associated with making a finished product. If we can hit this stretch goal, everyone at the $25 level and above will get an extra copy of the CD that you can give to someone you love!
Stretch Goal #2 -- $25,000
If we can get to $25,000, then we'll be able to afford some of the fun stuff associated with releasing a new album like merchandise, radio, and hiring a publicist. If we can hit this goal, then everyone at the $50 level and above will receive an album inspired tote bag to fill with picnic supplies or groceries.
Stretch Goal #3 -- $30,000
Sarah collects Vinyl. Sarah would love if we could press this lullaby collection on vinyl. If we can hit $30,000, then we will do it and everyone at the $100 level and above gets one!
We both feel that creating music and writing songs is something that isn't much of a choice. We would be writing music regardless of anyone was listening, but the fact we have such incredibly loyal fans all over the world is humbling and amazing. We have felt supported and loved by you all for many years, and we hope that this new album will be cherished in your music collection as well. We know it is a departure from our regular records, but it feels good to stretch out a bit and explore new territory. We promise that we will show up ready to record these songs with intention, heart, and a good dose of humor. Thank you!
Also a huge Thank You to Dehn Craig at Mango Film Productions for filming our Kickstarter Video. You nailed it. And thanks to Ann Whittaker for the photography.
Risks and challenges
It is scary to reach out and ask for help. We fully believe in this project and in our fans. Thank you for helping us! There is always a process to making a record, we are sure that we will encounter set backs, but we have made enough records over the years we feel confident we can overcome them all.
