In 2009 Moss Research made a commitment to finding a better way to build surfboards. After 15 years of making conventional toxic, non-recyclable, virgin petrol-chemical derived boards, master shaper Jake Moss was sick of feeling sick from the craft he’s so passionate about. The pursuit of a better alternative lead him to test an array of new recycled and plant based materials. This painstaking process resulted in development of the Eco-Flex® surfboard. Upon product release in 2011, Eco-Flex® was the first board on the market to receive a Gold Endorsement of Sustainability from Berkley MS graduate and author of “Surfboard Cradle to Grave”, Tobias Schultz.

Eco-Flex® by Moss Research, is a surfboard manufacturing process that utilizes recycled foam and plant-based bio resins, builds high performance surfboards that are recyclable and made with waste stream and plant based materials. The result is a superior, customizable hand-shaped board that is 75% cleaner, 30% lighter and lasts twice as long as industry standard Polyurethane/Polyester construction.

Fulfillment of Your Order
Each Eco-Flex® board is custom-crafted in an array of design templates to the exact rider specification and ability. Click here to visit our site to find your ideal board. Keep in mind Eco-flex boards are hand-made, one at a time. The general turn-around for a custom board is 6-10 weeks depending on the intricacy of the design, color and graphics. During high volume of orders, your custom board may take longer to complete. We'll keep you updated!

For quite some time, our next steps were to refine our process, educate the consumer with transparency and show the value-add while delivering a product that would exceed expectations within our parameters of manufacturing costs, so as to sell at our desired price.
We have done just that with our latest Eco-Flex surfboards! With the growing demand for goods that use a reduce, repurpose and recycle approach in their process, we are in a great position to produce more Eco-Flex boards, and we are excited to share them with everyone!
To do so, we need your help! Reaching our goal will give us the funds to:
1) Bulk order surfboard materials from our suppliers
2) Expand our manufacturing facility is San Diego to increase production capabilities, including contract glassing and an eco-board building material supply hub for other shapers to make Eco-Flex boards under a licensing agreement.
3) Create recycling programs with our partners at Marko Foam and work with local schools to help collect the feedstock for our process while creating educational eco-board building workshops.
4) Obtain an in depth 3rd party LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) to provide the industry with legitimate baseline metrics and transparency in evaluating the sustainability of our product.
The life of your Eco-Flex board
The first question always asked is: Does an eco-board come at a compromise?
In our case, absolutely not! Eco-Flex boards are lighter, stronger and perform with more flex dynamic than their traditional Polyurethane/Polyester counterparts. And because Eco-Flex boards absorb minimal water when punctured, last 2-3 times as long as the traditional Poly/PU board, and come at a mere 25% price increase, they are more reliable and furthermore, a better economic value for surfers.
Should your Eco-Flex board ever succumb to the elements and become dilapidated, bring it back to us. We will recycle it and issue you a $40 credit towards your new Eco-Flex board!!

Risks and challenges
Reliable Supply Chain:
We have been in the R&D process with our latest boards for 5 years. We have worked through the quirks of the new materials and changes in flex pattern to achieve a consistent and precise product. We have also established great working relationships with our recycled surfboard blank supplier Marko Foam, and bio-epoxy supplier Entropy Resins (both based in California) who have consistently delivered to our exact specifications.
As we move forward with R&D, we will continue to test new plant-based fiber reinforcements to increase the strength and sustainability of our boards as they become available, sourcing only at our level of standards in terms of product footprint, quality and durability. As we increase our units of production, we must ensure we can deliver a consistent, impeccable product in a reasonable amount of time. Creating new jobs within our company and training personnel is one or our main focuses at the moment.
As with any manufacturing of a tangible good, quality control is essential. Our final prototypes have been designed and tested to withstand the yearly rigors of the aquatic environment, but this is not to say that the boards are indestructible. With all of our boards minor foot indentation will result on the deck after surfing the board a few times. This is normal and purposeful by design to allow the board to dampen upon recovery from critical maneuvers and to also help the rider find their “magic foot placement” on the board on each ride. This will not impede the performance or longevity of your Eco-Flex board. Should you ding your Eco-flex board, repair it with EPOXY RESIN ONLY!!
