Why a Big cannon instead of a rocket ?
Rockets have been around for a long time and they work OK. The problem with a rocket is that it has to carry not just its payload but all of its fuel, the fuel tanks and a lot of additional equipment. That makes a rocket big, and big is expensive. Let’s face it, barring some breakthrough in advanced physics rockets aren’t going to get much smaller or cheaper than they are now.
On the other hand a gun launcher can fire a vehicle that is basically a payload wrapped in an aerodynamic shell.
That makes them small and small is cheap !
SO WHAT MAKES
THE STARFIRE SPACE CANNON SPECIAL ?
The Starfire gun is an 8” bore by 45 foot long multi-chambered artillery piece that has been custom designed to fire payloads into space.
The problem with a conventional gun as a space launcher is that it has one big propellant charge and when that charge is fired it produces a very high pressure spike, often 50,000 to 60,000 PSI which drops off rapidly as the projectile travels down the bore.
These high pressures place high G loadings on a payload, often tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of G’s. Now, launching at high G’s may be OK for simple payloads such as fuel or construction materials but it is not much good for launching payloads that are useful for the average person.
The Starfire gun, on the other hand, breaks the propellant charge down into a number of smaller increments. These increments are ignited sequentially as the vehicle travels down the bore. This gives you much lower pressures and much lower G loadings.
A further advantage to this technique is that unlike a conventional cannon that has one big pressure spike, the goal of the Starfire gun is to create a lower but more constant pressure and a more constant acceleration as the vehicle travels down the bore.
One interesting aspect of this technology is that the longer the barrel the more efficient the system becomes. The Starfire gun has been limited to 45’ only because of the need to keep it road mobile, but with this technology a barrel twice or even three times as long would be practical.
Getting it UP for YOU !
It has taken a lot of hard work to create the Starfire launcher and we are almost ready to begin to provide low cost space launch services to you.
This Kickstarter project will be the inaugural launches for this launcher and we will be conducting these launches in two phases.
The first phase of this project will be to conduct a series of test launches to certify the Starfire gun while firing in the vertical position for the first time.
These tests will begin with a half power charge and we will be working up to a full charge while insuring the mechanical aspects of the launcher firing in the vertical configuration.
It is expected that we will be able to complete this work with six test shots using our standard test slugs.
These tests will be conducted in three sets with two shots per set, although we may conduct additional shots as needed. Between sets we will examine the launch system and the associated equipment and make any necessary modifications before we proceed to Phase Two.
This is where the fun starts !
In phase two testing we will be flying no less than four sub-orbital flights with glide probe vehicles.

The glide probes that we will be using during these tests are similar to the glide probes used during the High Altitude Project in the 1960’s. During the HARP project there were hundreds of flights with vehicles of this type. We are not anticipating many problems with this design although there may be a bit of a learning curve as we gain experience with this vehicle.
These glide probes are simple dart shaped vehicles that are made from aluminum and steel and use a sabot to insure that they fit the bore.
We will be conducting two test sets with two flights per set.
The major goals for the phase two tests is to test the mechanical integrity of the basic glide probe design and the function of the sabot while in the bore, to confirm the sabot separation and the vehicles free flight stability and to achieve a minimum altitude of 100km.
When this kick starter project is completed we will continue work hard to provide you with low cost access to space.
We will be working on develop more advanced vehicles with larger payloads and higher altitudes.
