A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
The Boatrax Box has the perfect mechanism to read everything your boat does. In the inside lives a modern computer designed to read messages like oil pressure, fuel consumption, rpm, location and running hours and transmit data in real time so you have a better grasp of your boat’s history.
With the Boatrax Box, we are bringing automatic boat tracking to your fingertips
Directly connect the device to your NMEA 2000 Network.
Securely transmit and store the boat’s data to the cloud.
Automatically log you engine stats and other electronics information
Follow your boat's stats in real-time
Go back in history and review the historical usage data of your boat.
Receive important alerts for potential malfunction and position of your boat.
HOW IT WORKS
Boatrax is a smart box installed on the boat and able to read and store all messages coming from the engine, devices, and sensors connected to the boat’s network. We’ve been able to interface with older engines that transmit data using older communication standards.
Connect Device to NMEA Backbone
Install your device near the dashboard and connect it to the NMEA 2000 Backbone.
Complete The Box’s configuration and activation using your mobile app.
Follow your boat’s information in real time using the mobile app and if at home, using our web interface.
Got questions? We’ve got answers. If you have some other questions, feel free to send us an email or leave a comment.
Will the Boatrax Box work on my Boat?
The answer is almost always yes. If you have a boat that is a couple of years old all your electronics are probably running on NMEA 2000 which is directly compatible. if your boat is older you can still use our box there would just be a need for an adapter.
How does the real-time functionality work?
The real-time functionality allows you to see the location of your boat as well as its heading, Depth, RPM, Speed, Engine Temp, Oil pressure and battery status. You can see this while you are on board your boat or if your boat is being used and you are somewhere else.
Do you need technical knowledge to install this on your boat?
We do recommend you have your current technician install it on your boat. It is not a difficult installation and should not take much time. However, since you are dealing with electronics that are expensive it is always safer to have a professional install it.
What logs do you store? and why are they important?
We store everything that goes on with your engines, and devices automatically. As well as allow you to store any expenses and services done on your boat. The importance for keeping everything stores is to allow you to see when problems are occurring before they become too damaged. Another benefit is that if you want to sell your boat having everything recorded helps increase the value of the boat.
The Boatrax Box is based around SignalK, an open source marine data exchange intended to be used for communications between instruments and sensors connected to the boat, and canboat, an opensource canbus command-line utilities library for the marine industry. Boatrax has been able to extend the functionality of SignalK to not only transmit the data in real time, but also store and analyze that data in the cloud to make it available for boat owners to make better decisions about maintenance and increase the resale value of the boat.
The Box ships in with a GSM/GPS module to transmit data in real-time and a 32GB storage capacity to be able to store instruments and engine data while out of coverage area. The stored data can be later synchronized when connectivity is restored.
Boat owners are able to connect via bluetooth with The Box to follow the data as they sail. The real-time data is displayed in the Boatrax Mobile app as a regular dashboard to follow information like RPM, oil pressure, engine temperature, battery voltage, fuel consumption rate, depth, speed, heading and on-map GPS location and route.
The transmission of the data using the built-in cellular module enables our platform to store vast amounts of data and the ability to provide alerts and suggestions about preventive maintenance. This connection also provides remote monitoring capabilities both in web and our mobile interface so that if your vessel is rented or being used by a family or friend you have access to the boats dashboard at all times.
The data stored is not only used for analysis, but to allow the boat owner to have access to the historic data of the boat. This data can be shared with brokers or potential buyers to increase the resale value of the vessel or just for maintenance follow up and diagnostics.
The Boatrax Box is equipped with a NMEA 2000 connection to allow for easy installation. The device can be powered using a 12v supply or by the NMEA 2000 Network. For boats that are not compatible or does not have a NMEA 2000 network provisioned, we'll have the necessary accessories to make your boat compatible.
We have tested our prototype device in different environments including J1708 and J1939 with different gateways to interface with the engine. Depending on the boat's configuration an certified electrician may be required to install the Boatrax Box. If the boat is NMEA 2000 compatible, then the installation is as simple as one connection to the NMEA backbone.
Boatrax is donating 3% of the total pledges to the Debris Free Oceans Foundation to help with the mission of inspiring local communities to responsibly manage the lifecycle of plastics and waste as part of a global initiative to eradicate marine debris from our beaches, reefs, and oceans. Risks and challenges
The Boatrax Box is brought to you by a team of experienced developers, engineers and boat captains. Launching our product on Kickstarter will allow us to continually improve our product using the feedback from early adopters like you.
As with any new product there is always the risk for adoption to continuously support the platform. However, have contacted with several manufacturers, brokers, insurance companies, surveyors, service/maintenance providers and rental agencies and platforms that are willing to promote the use of the Boatrax platform as a standard to keep and store the boat logs safely.
We have been working on the prototype for the last year. Testing with old inboard and outboard engines, newer and older boats, smaller and larger vessels, our team has gained the necessary experience to keep supporting our project.
We are working on our future application to certify our product with NMEA although it is not required to properly function. We understand that there is a risk that we might not be certified, but we will insist until it is necessary because we feel having the certification will allow to not only improve our product but to always include innovative smart boat functionality.
The manufacturing process and logistics always have its risks. However, we feel that we have the right team to tackle any challenges that this process may take and we are perfectly capable of reaching the manufacturing volumes that this launch takes.
