What is it?
Vanguards is a biannual magazine that celebrates and investigates thoughtful and honest brands and their high quality products.
The first community we’re focused on is Scotland; celebrating the country’s rich history and tradition of design and manufacturing, whilst also developing a voice that advocates sustainable and ethical manufacturing and consumption.
From sustainable salmon farms to the oldest waterproof jacket and from traditional Shetland knitwear to contemporary gin distilling, we explore the people and communities behind brands and products.
We're asking for your support to help get issue 02 off our screens and into print!
What’s in this issue?
Issue 02 is even more diverse than issue 01, including: a graphic novel about jacket makers, Aero Leather; a brand spotlight with paintings on Dunnet Bay Distillery; a conversation with fashion designers Nicholas Daley and Le Kilt; an article investigating Japan's relationship with Scottish style; an essay about transparency and traceability, and more.
Everything is made and designed in the UK.
Issue 01 — what we’ve learnt and how we’re growing.
We took on the challenge of launching issue 01 pretty much as soon as we’d returned our graduation gowns. We researched, commissioned, edited, promoted and distributed the first issue by ourselves. And learnt an incredible amount along the way.
Its success and people’s feedback confirmed that we are building something worthwhile and positive. We’re now confident enough to produce a more ambitious issue 02: growing our team, outsourcing distribution and increasing our print run.

Risks and challenges
Publishing a magazine is a beautiful thing, but it doesn't come without challenges. However, we've not only done one before but have done lots of research around issue 02.
We already have the majority of the content together and laid out.
We trust everyone we work with. We've worked with many of them before and they are experts in their fields.
We're working with the industry-trusted and highly regarded printers, Park Communications, and MMS Distribution to help create a high quality product on time, and get it out into the world safely.
We've grown our team beyond just James and Hugo, which means we're able to handle a high number of orders and the increased workload.
And finally, we have estimates and have developed samples for every reward item, and have calculated shipping costs.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
