A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

Made by Adventurers for Adventurers
Traft, the first tent-packraft system of its kind, delivers an innovative way to adventure travel. Our unique patent pending design combines the fun, excitement and utility of packrafting with the comfort, protection, and leisure of camping in a single, lightweight system. With Traft, all adventures are covered.
Explore More. Carry Less.
At any point during your adventure, packing up your Traft is quick and simple. Light, flexible, durable TPU plastics, aluminum, and polyester, and a unique design allows for our watercraft and tent to be folded neatly into a small pack. Spend less time packing and hauling, and more time exploring.
Our systems are available a la carte. Already an avid pack rafter? Upgrade your existing raft with our retrofit tent kit. Pick up a raft by itself to explore the unknown, or get the whole package to take your adventures to the next level.
Want to raft even harder? Our TRAFT Extreme model will get you prepared for Class IV and V whitewater conditions with its self-bailing capabilities. It's also equipped with a Tizip to allow you even more room to pack the necessities, and we'll include our advanced neoprene knee straps which will give you more control in turbulent waters.
Introducing the TRAFT 95 and TRAFT 101 packrafts. We have begun production in Asia as well as setting up simultaneous design and production in Salt Lake City, UT. We are utilizing single side urethane coated super strong and durable 420 Denier TPU material from a leading technical fabric manufacturer in Taiwan. Our 420 D TPU is exceedingly rugged, tough, and lightweight. Our testing has shown that our single coated 420 D TPU performs at least 2.5 times better in tear and puncture resistance than comparable single coated 210 D TPU, leading to a packraft that can absorb way more punishment over time, with less repairs/patching, and better standard air retention in cold water.
Our tents are made out of a lightweight and durable polyester DWR fabric and include aluminum poles. Our tent, sleep system, and knee straps feature aircraft aluminum G-Hook connectors. The tent packs neatly into an included drybag when not in use. There is a closeable clear window in the front (bow) of the Traft Tent, and we will include a vent in the rear (stern) to prevent condensation. The tent also includes a hook for lighting and interior pockets.
The Traft's valve is a super durable Boston type valve with both two way and one way functionality, and our inflation bag will inflate the Traft in approximately 5 minutes.
We recommend the TRAFT 95 for individuals between 5'0 and 5'9. For individuals between 5'10 and 6'3 we recommend the TRAFT 101. The maximum suggested weight for the TRAFT 101 and 95 are 350 lbs and 325 lbs respectively.
Please note all specs are estimates based on prototypes, and we will update the community once we have a final production model completed. Add approximately 15 oz in weight on the TRAFT Extreme model for neoprene knee straps and Tizip. Regardless, your Traft will be super light and super tight!
$100,000 UNLOCKS A NEW COLOR OF THE COMMUNITY'S CHOICE
CARBON FIBER UNLOCKED AT $425,000
We have been researching how to enhance our already-tough and durable TPU in order to push the materials even further, and have linked up efforts with a leading material science program at an American University. While not yet tested in practical application, a small number of studies have been conducted that have shown the possibilities for bonding TPU block polymers with carbon fiber nano tubes. This can increase tensile strength in the fabric by up to 50%.
Should we reach our stretch goal of $425,000, we will be able to pour further research into the process to ensure our TPU floors are stronger than anything on the market. There are also applications for this technology in other fields.
This development process will take time and add extra time to the delivery of your Traft, but we feel it will be well worth it and your carbon-enhanced Traft will still be ready for Spring 2019. All backers will still have the option of our super strong standard 420 D TPU and receive early 2019 delivery if they choose.
Traft began at Utah Contract Sewing when UCS was working on technical hammock projects for clients. A hammock sewn by April, one of our seamstress-designers, was set up in the UCS workshop. Through observation and contemplation our design team conceived a packable, transportive, tent-raft hybrid to utilize on multi day adventures for both water and on land.
The idea of Traft began taking shape with concept drawings and then substantial research into TPU – Thermo Plastic Polyurethane, which is an incredibly strong, durable, shear resistant and flexible plastic. TPU is way lighter and more environmentally responsible than the typical inflatable raft material, PVC.
Shipping and VAT
We can ship packraft rewards to the following countries: U.S., Canada, all EU countries, U.K., Norway, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. When shipping to EU countries, we must charge VAT after the Kickstarter has ended and prior to shipping the packraft reward.
The risks and challenges related to our TRAFT products are those typically faced by product designers and small manufacturers. The rafts and tents are production ready with some final organizing and tweaking. We have developed the right supply chain and are confident we are mitigating any risks to the production and delivery of TRAFT. This is our first Kickstarter campaign, and TRAFT is a new product, so we are learning as much as we can as we go forward, and preparing as much as possible. General risks also include geopolitical events/shipping out of our control, however we look forward to fulfilling all orders on a timely basis, and delivering a quality product we can be proud of and customers can have confidence in. There is always risk inherent with new products coming to market, regardless of whether Kickstarter is involved or not. We do not have total control over the raw materials and the factories we are working with. With that said, we have great working relationships with all of our suppliers, and also backup plans in place. We have no reservations about their ability to deliver. We don't anticipate any setbacks, but there are always variables that can delay delivery. We have allocated extra time in delivering TRAFTs to account for variables, and aim to be early on delivery.
With our stretch goal of $425,000 to further develop our carbon fiber nanotube TPU, the development will add approximately 3-4 months to delivery, and will add a challenging element that we look forward to working on. If and when we reach that goal (anything is possible!), Backers will have the option to wait for upgraded carbon fiber nanotube TPU floors, or get earlier delivery with our still super strong and durable 420 D TPU.
