About this project
My name is Tom Carroll and I am a comic book writer and artist. During the past year I began contacting some of the top comic book creators in the comics industry, most of them artists or writers I've admired all my life. The list includes: Neil Gaiman (Sandman, Coreline), Steve Rude (Nexus), Dave Dorman (Star Wars, Wasted Lands), Mike Grell (The Warlord), Syd Mead (Tron, Blade Runner), P. Craig Russell (Killraven, Elric, Night Music), Len Wein (Swamp Thing, X-Men, Justice League), Bernie Wrightson (Swamp Thing, Frankenstein, Meat Loaf covers) Mark Evanier (Groo), and many others. But I needed a reason to be talking to them, so I asked each for their favorite recipe in order to make a cookbook that would aid two prominent charities that serve the comic book community: The Hero Initiative and The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Each will receive a quarter of the cookbook’s profits.
I collected the recipes into a cookbook called "Batter! Broil!! Baste!!! The Comic Book Creators Cookbook." Finally, at the beginning of 2010 I secured a publisher for the book, Square One Publishers. What I still need is are funds to pay Johnny B. Gerardy to pencil and ink sequential art that will make this book truly unique. Johnny B. is a longtime friend, a talented artist, and someone who is making a life out of comic book art. He inked Tim Vigil’s pencils on 777 The Wrath. He embellished and inked Courtney Huddleston’s pencils on three volumes of The Loch. He’s a comic art lifer. Heck, he's doing the artwork for my project even without a budget!! He's that kind of guy – passionate, selfless, and completely unstoppable when he gets up a head of steam. He'd rather draw and ink than eat or sleep, but really, he should be paid for his quality work, shouldn't he?
That’s where you come in, fans of comic books, or cookbooks, or both. Through the magic of Kickstarter.com you can back Johnny B. Gerardy and qualify for a raft of fabulous cookbook art-related booty based on how well you back him. Backing Johnny B. will make it possible for him to devote himself fully and completely to this project. And along the way you will be able to watch him make some of the most singularly unusual, yet completely delicious comic book artwork ever envisioned by humankind. Think I’m exaggerating? Check him out.
Already Johnny has created a cadre of culinary superheroes that includes: Supperman, Deli Doll, Shish-kabub, Transfatman and Busboy, The Tenderizer, Speedo, and The Green Ladle. I will show off all of Johnny’s character concepts as part of this project’s video, which will be posted as soon as it is edited.
The cover to the book is completed and serves as part of the reward system for this project. Johnny is ready to begin scripting and drawing sequential pages that will separate the major sections of the cookbook.
By backing Johnny B., you will make off with an amazing haul of swag, including: -- signed mini concept art-cards,
-- digital .pdf files of sequential art,
-- pencil sketches,
-- cover posters,
-- your name mentioned in the book,
-- being included in the sequential art as:
------- yourself, as you appear now,
------- a superhero, one that you craft with Johnny B.'s assistance,
and finally …
-- everything along with an autographed copy of the actual cookbook.
Make it happen today ... for Johnny B., for me, for yourself.
To paraphrase a famous quote from Star Wars, “Back him now, Kickstarter Nation … you’re his only hope!”
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
