What is My Adventure Journal?
My Adventure Journal is a travel journal to record your memories from your vacation. Designed to be used in multiple ways, the journal can be used to write, sketch & add mementoes from your trip. The journal comes in a choice of 3 lengths - a 4day/12 page (for the long weekend), 7 day/18 page (for a week) & 14 day/32 page (for a 2 week) vacation. Each journal includes 2 packing lists, matching in color to the journal you choose.
I have a love of good stationery & have used many different notebooks/journals on my vacations over the years, but have never found the ideal one to record my travelling experiences. After looking into printing options, I decided to take the plunge & design my own. With most travel journals featuring a vintage design, I wanted to create something fresh, new & modern. The internal design started with the 'Airmail' color edition, which was inspired by the old red, white & blue airmail envelopes which to me is the epitome of the idea of travel writing. I then adapted the design to feature other colors, including the mint/mustard version and the charcoal/lime limited edition (based on kickstarter colors).
Whilst most journals feature either blank or lined interiors, I tried to design the pages so they could be adapted to different uses. With sections to write, draw and add favorite experiences of your trip, as well as areas to stick mementoes you've picked up along your travels. It was important to keep the journals content concise as no one wants to carry a heavy thick notebook when travelling, especially when it will only ever be half filled at best.
The Journal is split into sections, with the planning of your vacation in the front, your vacation diary in the middle & important contacts in the back.
The planning area features a page for your travelling details, with a pocket folder opposite to store any important documents/tickets. This is followed by a world map to plot your adventure & a quick view itinerary to plan your days in advance.
The diary section includes a double page for each day of your vacation, with a whole page dedicated to writing - with a box for your favorite highlight of the day & a box to add amazing food experienced (or restaurant reservations). The opposite page can be used in various ways, the top section features a grid area & the bottom section features a blank area. This page can be used to draw, sketch, add mementoes or add more writing.
The last section of the journal features a page to add any important contacts, whether it is websites, family and friends addresses (so you can send them a postcard) or any other important details you need when your away. There is also a pocket folder as part of the back cover to store your keepsakes & postcards.
The Little Details
In making the journal, the materials were just as important as the design. I wanted a good quality paper to write & draw on as well as a smooth writing surface. The cover needed to be strong enough to withstand travelling but not too rigid that it interfered with being used easily. The dimensions of the journal needed to be large enough to cater to the sketchbook/scrapbook elements but still slim enough to fit into a day bag.
With these details in mind, these are the dimensions & specifications of the journals:
Overall size: A5 (148mm x 210mm)
Cover: 350gsm paper weight, silk coating, gloss lamination
Pages: 160gsm paper weight, uncoated
Length of journals: 4 day - 12 pages
7 day - 18 pages
14 day - 32 pages.
The money raised from your pledges will be used to produce My Adventure Journal. With the vast majority covering production costs of both the journal & packing lists. The rest will cover a combination of kickstarter & payment fees, journal packaging & shipping materials.
I have added the reward tiers in detail below, so you can see what great rewards are on offer.
Whatever you decide to give will be greatly appreciated as it gets the project that one step closer to it's goal. Thank you so much for your support.
As soon as our funding goal is reached, this is the timeline of what happens next:
End of Kickstarter Campaign • July 15, 2014
Funding Collection • End of July
Journal Production • August 1 - August 15, 2014
Packaging & Distribution • August 16 - August 31, 2014
Arrival of your Journal/s • September 2014
Risks and challenges
I have tried to minimise the challenges of this project with as much research, prototypes & testing as possible before the project started, until I was happy with the quality of the finished printed product.
My biggest challenge will be construction & packaging. As I will be constructing the inside document & keepsake folder by hand, I have allowed myself enough time to construct, pack & ship all journals - so that they will arrive no later than mid September 2014.
