Illusive Comics & Games is moving to a new home in Santa Clara. We want to give you the opportunity to help us create a new fun, friendly, thematic, and entertaining store that you’ll love to visit!
In 2007, Anna Warren Cebrian bought the comic shop "Brian's Books" to create Illusive Comics & Games. With some amazing staff and incredible customers, we weathered the Great Recession and beyond. In fact, the shop has grown every year; we are now one of the top comic book stores in the country.
We have no choice.
Our landlord wants us out. There's a longer story, full of gory details, but bottom line: we cannot stay in our current location.
We are being pushed out of the nest. And for a while, it looked like we might hit the frying pan.
Anna searched high and low for a new Illusive home. She found places that were too expensive, or ridiculously far away, or close and affordable but unreliable. Months passed. The environment around the current location became increasingly toxic.
Then the miracle happened.
Well, maybe it's just Cosmic Fate — but on the very day of Illusive Comics' 9th Anniversary, Anna got wind of a location that's
- Still in Santa Clara
- Twice as large as the current space
- Close to the University
- Close to the Farmer's Market
- Rife with potential
We're moving just two miles down the road to 1260/1270 Franklin Mall, in downtown Santa Clara, next to the main Post Office.
The space we’re moving to is HUGE! Twice the size of our old shop! It’s got room for podcasting and a classroom for meetups. It’s got walls that go all the way up to there! Floors that wrap around to there! Remodeling this location will give us the most floor and wall space we’ve ever had for our geektastic goods.
It will cost more than $50,000 to remodel the new space (the plans below don't include the bathrooms and staff break room). New paint and flooring with fewer walls are needed, along with additional fixtures. It's an opportunity to create something really special.
To continue what makes us special, we don’t want to just move the old stock over, slap up some new signs, stick our managers Perry and Steve behind a counter, and just carry on as usual. We want to give our customers, new and old, recent or vintage, the best Geek Shopping experience you can imagine. Even better than before. We want you walking out of there with stories to tell your friends and an instant desire to come back.
We want to recreate everything that was unique about Illusive and make it even better. Inspiration everywhere you look! Art on the walls! Art on the floor! Art on the staff! A space that’s fun, supportive, friendly, inclusive, roomy, intimate, geeky, stylish, and comfortable.
A place where you can be your self. Where everybody knows the name you want them to know.
We plan to offer new things to do, aside from shopping and hanging out in this swanky space:
- Art Classes for comics
- Miniature painting classes
- live model drawing, and more!
- Writer Meetups
- A Podcasting room
- A Knitting/Sewing Meetup
- Comic Creation classes
- Open Gaming Space
- (Have more ideas? Please tell us!)
We’re not bitter or depressed over losing the old store (well, Anna is, but she'll get over it in time). But: we’re never giving up, nor giving in. We didn't just go grab some space in some other town because we’ve been pressured to. We’re not firing some of the staff, or cutting back on our selection because someone wants to monkey with our bottom line.
We’re Illusive. We do Magic.
Watch us turn horse apples into applesauce.
With your help.
(If you're local and pick up your rewards in-store for a level that charges shipping we'll give you extra cool things since we cannot waive or refund the shipping fee.)
If you're long-distance, you can send us artwork to put on the wall for your reward level.
Some of the Rewards:
Since we're on a pretty good pace for such a short Kickstarter Campaign, we started think about what might happen if our funding were irradiated with cosmic rays and unstable molecules... That's right! STRETCH GOALS!
Let's say we power through our $15K Goal and add another $1,000. What could we do for you then?
Raise $16,000 to See the Kickstarter B-Roll! Want more Perry Giggling? Want more Anna Emotions? Want more Steve Sincerity? No! You want more Gaz! We know it. It's okay. And that's what you'll get if we reach this Stretch Goal and release the footage from our Kickstarter interviews that was left on the cutting room floor.
Pledging an extra thousand dollars isn't easy, but we've seen our backers do amazing things. So what if you triple that, which is totally a thing you could do?
Raise $18,000 and We'll start a weekly Podcast of The Steve & Perry Show. Right now, Steve and Perry have more than enough to do in a day. But with a little encouragement, we can free up some of their time to be recorded and podcasted. We'll have lively discussion, special guests, sarcasm, sass, reviews, complaints, and at least two mustaches. The internet will never be the same, thanks to you!
Risks and challenges
This is an expensive proposition, and nothing in life is certain.
It's possible that remodeling costs could overrun. It's possible that artists might not complete the work they promised. It's possible that chairs might not be as comfy as they seem in the catalog.
Know how we know all this?
This is not our first rodeo. We are *expert* rodeo clowns.
In 2014 we opened a new game shop, Isle of Gamers, and ran a successful Kickstarter to help with the remodel and decoration of that shop. Isle is a vibrant place, and now we declare it the Premier Tabletop Game Store in the Silicon Valley.
Illusive Comics & Games won Best Comic Shop in the Bay Area for 2015 and 2016 and has been a top contender for years. We do this through hard work, a lot of hope, and some luck.
Construction should run through mid-August. We used the same contractor on Isle of Gamers; we know they keep true to their word.
We plan to fulfill all rewards following our move to the new location.
We know it's going to take twice as long as we hope and be four times as hard. We're going to cry. We're going to tear our hair out (those of us that still have it). When something goes wrong, we'll stay up all night to make it right.
Go watch the video again. Watch when Anna says the store is a piece of her heart. That lady will not let you down. Our challenges are many. Our solution is her.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
