We are an innovative little New Zealand company that has created a world-class piece of brewing hardware which we are ready to take to the world!

STEP UP to the world of professional home-brewing with our MALT MECHANICS range of conical fermenters in 1/4 Barrel and 1/2 Barrel models.
Our fermenters are the only plastic home-brewing conical which come fully featured with tri-clamp fittings and stainless steel valves in 1/2" for the take-off, and 1" for the yeast-dump. The fermenters are suitable for transferring beer under pressure and come with everything you need to get your beer fermenting right out of the box.
We have designed our fermenters to be flexible enough that home-brewers can add to and adapt them to suit the needs of their own home brewing methods, while having out-of-the-box functionality that lets you just get on and brew.
2 years in development and in the market for a year in New Zealand, we have evolved the product from humble beginnings and have recently commissioned new tooling which integrates tri-clamp fittings into the plastic body, giving an unparalleled level of sanitation in a plastic fermenter. We have achieved this by actually moulding the features in, rather than integrating an existing tri-clamp fitting, ensuring there are no crevices or threads that can harbour bacteria and grime - a common pitfall in existing plastic designs.
We took on this design project in response to a market need locally, inheriting the project from a fellow home-brewer who had a partially complete design, but which still required resolution. We quickly addressed some of the key features around lid closure and sealing, leg attachment and valve fitting, then sought a group of keen home brewers to get brewing in order to give us some real-world feedback on what they wanted from the design. One of the overarching features most brewers desired was the integration of sanitary fittings to attach the valves. Much of the other feedback was incorporated however a significant investment was required (due to the design of the tooling) in order to be able to incorporate the sanitary fittings. As such we went to market with a bulkhead-type fitting for attaching the valves. Although tidy, and functionally giving the same result during fermentation, it was still not the product we wanted it to be. Seeing so much enthusiasm for our product and amazing support, we felt the time was right to give our brewers what they really wanted in a fermenter - no compromises!!
We are brewers ourselves, but have also worked with our local home-brewing community and listened to what they want in a product. Over the course of the last year in production we have fine-tuned our design, packaging and component quality to ensure we are delivering the best experience for our customers. This has resulted in the latest and greatest incarnation of our conical fermenter design!! We have a lot to thank our home-brewing and manufacturing community for.
Our fermenters come standard with all-stainless hardware. Valves, sanitary fittings, lid, legs, latches and fasteners are all manufactured in 304 stainless steel, and all seals are made from food-grade silicon. The body of the fermenter is manufactured right here in New Zealand in 1/4" thick high-density polyethylene (HDPE). This is a trusted material in home-brewing which, combined with our inherent design features, provides a sanitary, low oxygen-permeable environment for your fermenting beer. HDPE is also an incredibly strong material, and we have designed the fermenter in a way that (with your own suitable fitting added through the 22mm or 7/8" lid hole ) brewers are able to use their own CO2 source to gently push beer into their kegs - once again preserving it from the spoils of oxygen.
We have come to the Kickstarter community in order to launch our product to the world. We'll be using the funds raised to order components in volume and pay for some of the final tooling and jigs required to mould and fabricate the body of the fermenter. We have already manufactured hundreds of our previous fermenter design, and have honed our process in both moulding and fabricating the bodies to a very high quality, so we expect that aside from initial setting up and tolerancing of jigs our new design will be a relatively straightforward transition to manufacturing.
Risks and challenges
We are a small product development consultancy, based in Auckland, New Zealand, who understand the risks, processes and hurdles often encountered in developing new products and taking them to market. Collectively our team of three have over 25 years product development and Industrial Design experience working in award-winning creative teams both here in New Zealand and internationally.
The reality of undertaking design work on a day-to-day basis has armed us with tools to deal with these inevitable curve-balls - frustrating moments which we have experienced during the development of this product too. As a result we have developed systems which aim to capture issues before they slip through the cracks, checks that allow us to have complete control of the product right up to the delivery to our customers, and the appropriate response mechanisms for dealing with any customer feedback should an issue arise.
Committed to transparency, honesty and continuous improvement in both product and service delivery, our goal is to provide an exceptional experience to our customers.
A big shout out goes out to all that have helped us get this far, our manufacturers and suppliers, our early adopters, testers and local brewing community and Thom and Campbell for our sweet vid! We also like to throw a shout out to The Ugly Beats for sweet tunes. Check them out!
