Ship of Heroes recreates the atmosphere and feel of City of Heroes, but upgraded in every way: cutting-edge graphics, a new, exciting setting to explore, meaningful character creation choices, and numerous other improved mechanics. That's why this game needs to exist.

And we want you to help us create it.

Every character should be unique. This is a foundational premise of Ship of Heroes. We have already custom-coded a completely functional character creator with three initial character models and nearly 400 character morphs. Skin color can be varied over a huge range, and we’ve already added our first alien skin color. There are literally hundreds of kinds of eyes in the character creator, and that’s before you allow for modifications to colors. We are committed to enabling you to make your heroic character, instead of just playing a version of someone else’s hero.

Clothing and costumes are already integrated into the game, although much more is coming. In fact, all four signature heroes shown in our videos, and the human NPCs, are all made in the same character creator you’ll be using to make your characters! We’ve meticulously enabled a wide variety of clothing and costumes in a way that prevents clipping, which is what happens in games when one piece of clothing should fit over another one, but doesn’t quite manage it – the piece underneath pokes through, or clips, which damages immersion in the game.

We’re empowering Archetypes, or classes, in a different way than most games. The initial Archetypes are Devastator, Enhancer, Brawler, and Tanker. Additional options, such as the squad-controlling Commander and the paralyzing Controller, are in the works for later.

When you select an Archetype in Ship of Heroes, that’s just the beginning. Next, you'll choose from a long list of primary and a secondary powersets, which alter your characters’ stats substantially. Inside each powerset you can select which powers your character will learn for even more variety. In addition, every hero has a mid-powered pistol attack that can be fired constantly, so you'll always be able to fight, even when your powers are recharging.

As you play, you'll optimize how strong each power will be - you can choose to enhance range, damage, accuracy, and many other stats, one upgrade at a time. Whatever Archetype you choose, your decisions will make your character uniquely suited to your playstyle.

Fight enemies solo, or join teams of up to ten players - and eventually, raids with hundreds of heroes working together. Learn the secrets of both PVE and PVP zones, then build your own missions with our mission creation toolset. Play with your friends, regardless of level, with a team system that lets you bring allies up, or down, to match the missions you're doing.

Change the enemy strength on each mission and raid to learn the ropes on easier settings, then triumph on higher difficulties to acquire rare loot and achievements.

After you win, use the loot that automatically transfers into your inventory to craft, buy, and sell a variety of powerups and enhancements. Arm yourself with everything from magic runes and spells to grenades and rocket launchers, then take on entire planets full of enemies.

Ship of Heroes recreates the atmosphere, feel, and friendly community of MMORPGs from the Golden Age of Gaming, inspired by games like City of Heroes and Star Wars Galaxies. We are re-creating an action game with the teaming and social elements restored. 

Most of us play MMOs solo sometimes, and at other times we play with good friends, or with pick-up groups. The point is to find a positive experience, however you enjoy playing. By re-creating the positive social element of early MMOs, we set the stage for a player experience in which you can enjoy every part of the game many times. Ship of Heroes is a destination, like a favorite restaurant where you meet your friends, rather than a sequence of missions you play once and then abandon.

With advanced customization and an unsurpassed ability to mix and match powers, each character you create is truly unique, and experiencing all the game has to offer would require countless alts. Between your appearance, your customizeable backstory, your archetype, powers, upgrades, and badges, no one else will ever be quite the same as you.

Harvesting, crafting and trading are all aspects of Ship of Heroes that we will be coding after the Kickstarter. But we’re planning and enabling them now, in the story, and in the design and layout of the game. For example, we’ve already described that at least one level of the ship will be an extremely challenging harvesting level, filled with the most dangerous plants and animals the galaxy has to offer. Exploring this level will be an optional challenge, but it will bring rewards in terms of rare materials for crafting. Later in the game, this same sort of challenge will be present on the worlds that the FHS Justice travels to.

Day jobs will be a primary source for the schematics and recipes used to craft special equipment and powerups. Work in ship security, or on the medical side, or in engineering, or as a free trader or bounty hunter. Be a professional harvestor. Each day job will bring special, unique missions and enable you to increase your crafting skills.

Once you learn to make key items, you will be able to sell items you’ve crafted or materials you’ve harvested in the trading system aboard ship. You could even design a unique character that makes use of temporary powers as well as permanent ones, and create a new playing style that the devs never envisioned.

Ship of Heroes is set aboard the Free Human Ship Justice, which is a generation ship traveling between planets, colonies and space stations on the rim of the Human Federation. The ship is a nation in flight, and is also one of several powerful Heroships protecting the Federation. Artificial gravity and advanced technology combine to keep the living spaces for much of the ship’s interior idyllic, except in places where a conscious decision has been made to allow a different outcome.

However, during the first few decades of the ship’s travels, the crew and citizens accidentally allowed various invasive plants and animals from other worlds to become established aboard the ship. Some of these have proven to be impossible to completely eradicate, although efforts are ongoing. The lowest level, next to Engineering, is called Apotheosis City and has a hazard zone of dangerous invasive life forms on its the southern edge. Some of these have been mutated by exposure to Unobtanium.

One level of the ship has been given over almost entirely to a mélange of dangerous and exotic lifeforms culled from around the galaxy. This is the Harvest Pit, and it provides an opportunity for heroes, traders and the bold to enter and recover the rare and valuable byproducts of the dangerous life forms that have gone native on this level. The materials harvested from this level are sometimes used inside the ship, but are also key in the ships’ external balance of trade. Other levels specialize in manufacturing, in agriculture, or support high density living for those who prefer it.

Ship of Heroes will be really fun to play. We will deliver an experience in which you and your friends create characters and level them up by moving from one ship deck to another, gaining powers and fighting stronger enemies at each point. We’ll start with the first level and build out many more levels of the ship, each of which will be unique.

But the game is Ship of Heroes, not Warehouse of Heroes. It’s a ship that is going places, so our aspiration is to have the ship dock periodically at new worlds, distant mining colonies, other ships, and perhaps even a space station or two, in a sequence. In each new location, players will find new missions, materials to harvest, enemies to defeat, and unique items to acquire. The visited worlds will repeat, and we plan to create new content for each world over time, allowing the game to expand steadily.

Our company is new, but our team is highly skilled, and committed to this project.  We have been working on this project without salaries, and our contractors have been working at strongly reduced rates, because we all share a vision that Ship of Heroes need to exist.

Risks and challenges

People say that MMOs can't succeed on Kickstarter these days, because everyone has been burned by scams. But we've invested our own savings to build a playable alpha with team combat first, so you don't have to take our word for it. You can see for yourself how the game will look.

We've also proven that we can actually build a game on time. We've posted a rapid development schedule on our website. We've hit every milestone, and will continue to do so.

Of course, an alpha is not a finished game. There's much more we want to add: new enemy factions, missions, giant raids, planets... the list goes on. Every dollar you donate will bring us closer to launching.

There are many risks in trying to create a large new game. Technology, schedule, personnel, costs, legal, fundraising and many others. Any of these and other risks could derail the project. But the game has been funded by the owners and developers so far, so any setbacks will affect us even more strongly they will affect our backers. If you back us in this Kickstarter, we will be sharing the same outcomes with you.
