The Root Cellar is a locally owned business that has two missions:
Primary Mission- To provide the highest quality, local, direct-from-the-farm produce to the Louisville Community
Secondary Mission- To provide an alternative, healthy choice for food consumption to the people of the South and West Ends of Louisville (food deserts)
The project goal is to transform an old bus into a mobile market bringing our farm fresh food to the people who have the least access to it.
• increase the access to local foods in our community by taking The Root Mobile to neighborhoods called food deserts
• raise awareness for the need to change the paradigm of food delivery
• create a new business opportunity for The Root Cellar
• provide input into those areas of the South/West Ends of Louisville that would best support a permanent location for a third store
Our plan is to buy a small school or shuttle bus with a suitable diesel engine, strip the insides of its seats and install a framework to hold bins to carry produce. We have found and purchased an old Tarc3 bus from Valley Medical Transportation. Mechanics (Stuart & Scott) are currently working to bring the bus into top-notch condition! A lot of seats are already out of the bus, and once it is running we will be working to strip it completely. We plan on installing a small refrigeration unit to hold dairy and egg products, and also a small freezer unit to hold our frozen meat products. A freezer has been found for the bus and we are still hunting for a refrigerator. We will have portable tables to set up outside the bus for times when we have lots of fruits and vegetables to display. The bus will be outfitted with a veg-oil conversion kit, so that the engine can run off of recycled fryer oils (veg-oil) collected from local restaurants. This is our effort to be "sustainable" in some small way by recycling waste oils.
Risks and challenges
We understand that there are many potential pitfalls inherent with undertaking a project like this. From locating a suitable vehicle, to collecting and filtering the vegetable oil, this project is a bold initiative. We have two ace mechanics who specialize in veg-oil conversions and can do all of the other transformations necessary to make The Root Mobile hum.
We also understand that a successful project is ultimately judged by the impact that it has in creating change. We hope that this small, mobile, fresh food bus will generate a ground swell of interest in the local foods movement, healthy eating patterns, and community support for the local agrarian economy.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Yes!! We accept SNAP benefits at both locations currently and we will get approved for EBT as soon as we are able to.
