And I want you to be a part of it.
Over the course of seven days, I’m going to lock myself in an unfamiliar room with my typewriter and cover the walls with words. I don’t know what the work is going to be exactly, because I’m making it for you.
I'm turning writing from something solitary and distant into a performance. I want to see how a writer holds up when they come out from the protection of their caves and have to do their job in front of the people who read them.
By patronizing this project, you will be able to watch this happen and be part of it all. You can buy the book that will come from it, original pages, For my top patron I'll even get a tattoo of your initials to commemorate the project.
Welcome to the creative process. Watch the madness ensue.
Plus you’ll get to see me dance…
What are the rules?
Upon arriving in the room I surrender all contact with the outside world save for a super-secret twitter feed that backers can use to torment me. I am not allowed to leave the room for seven days/168 hours and the stream camera will be rolling the whole time I’m working.
What’s the money for?
Paper, typewriter ribbon, pens, but mostly the room. If you’re paying for physical products, like a print version of the book, you’re paying for the expense of small batch printing and binding, not to mention the people in the sweatshops that make the printers and the loggers who cut and pulp the timber and the United States postal workers who deliver the work. Just think, YOU can be a Job Creator! At the higher levels, the money will be going to other artists who help me with the project, such as making videos and the fancy schmancy artsy fartsy big book. 5% goes to kickstarter and there’s another 5% for credit card processing.
The whole thing will be on a typewriter?
Nah, I’ll probably type most of it for the sake of legibility, but I’ll also do much of it in long hand which I feel more comfortable doing. So I’ll be using notebooks, legal pads, hotel stationary, whatever I’m feeling at the moment. I’ll do some doodling too.
Isn’t this all a bit pretentious?
Yes. Yes it is. I mean. It is art after all. What did you expect? If you want grounded, I suggest you go invest in something like a new kind of car that runs on kale.
Wait so you’re not streaming the WHOLE time? What are you, lamesauce?
No, you won’t be watching me sleep or taking care of other bodily functions. That would be a whole other project and Kickstarter doesn’t let you fund those.I’m shooting for a minimum of six hours per day, but hopefully closer to ten or twelve.
So by a full week you mean?
The full god-made seven day span. 168 hours.
When you say ANYthing, you mean?
All gifts and stories are subject to the artist's creativity and discretion. I reserve to right to alter or refuse any requests I believe perpetuate a culture of hatred (e.g. if you ask me to write an essay on how a particular minority is ruining the world, expect a snarky retort or out and out refusal).
Wait! Didn’t I hear about something like this before?
Yes. I’m stealing a page from Molly Crabapple’s Week in Hell. She’s a total badass and one of my heroes and I have absolutely no qualms borrowing her idea. Because I don't need art supplies, I'm asking for less money. Also, my week will go longer, and the stream will be up for everyone who supports the project.
Risks and challenges
Most of the project will be done right on your computer screen.
What follows will be about a month of editing.
For those who want print copies, there will be about another month for that to go through.
I will be in touch with backers of the big ticket Items about fulfillment details for their gifts.
