AND IT RAINED
And It Rained is a surreal novel with illustrations, about a woman who seeks adventure and finds what really matters. This is a story about being completely flawed and not only moving past our mistakes but gaining strength to grow into better children, parents, lovers, friends.
Written for visual thinkers, it's an engaging read made up of vivid scenes.
As a gesture of gratitude to my wonderful backers, I've decided to include five additional illustrations in the novel. Do stay tuned by clicking the UPDATES tab!
Size and paper stock were chosen for portability so that this pretty paperback novel can accompany you on your adventures.
The art style is a clean, modern take on art nouveau.

She lives in Singapore, a city of perpetual heat and rain, where the streets are bright, the shops are full and people are lonely. Within this heightened world of indistinct identities is a man she calls Grisly, who is dark and likes to play rough—alternating between cruelty and tenderness, seeking her when they're apart—they share a dangerous affinity and she is certain he could be the devil.
Please enjoy an excerpt from the book, in sound and moving images:
What began as a straight-up novel evolved into a novel with illustrations. These are some of the fantastical pictures I saw in my mind while writing; I'm including them so that I can share the world of 'She' with you and invite you into this intimate space.
THE AUTHOR + ARTIST
"The protagonist, 'She', is an atypical heroine. She's extremely human, and makes the mistakes that come with being human; it's a character that contains that balance of vulnerability and gumption." - Adeline Pang
And It Rained is layered and thematic. If you're a visual sort of reader, who thinks in mini movies, you'll enjoy this. If you're a romantic or an optimistic who believes in the goodness of other people, you'll enjoy this.
Some of my influences include Chinese folk tales; my literature heroes Milan Kundera and Edgar Allan Poe; urban graphic novels like the Sandman series and the elevated eroticism of Milo Manara's art. The result is a sexy, evocative story with characters who are flawed yet relatable and redeemable.
Here are tactile mementoes of the A I R experience: an exclusive variety of original art prints and other story-related rewards. Some of these rewards are only available here.

I'm excited to share about our limited edition soft enamel pins, inspired by scenes from the book. The etching adds another layer of detail. "Lady made of stars" and "Infinite music" turned out real nicely, going from paper to pin.
Holding "Lady" in my palm, I can imagine her silhouette is a starry portal.
Because female empowerment is a cause that's dear to my heart, 15% of each pin-related reward will go to Daughters of Tomorrow: an organization that empowers underprivileged women in Singapore through education.

Designer, illustrator, and painter, Ashley Halsey moved to Portland, Maine after working as a book designer in New York City for over six years, first on cookbooks and lifestyle books at HarperCollins and then on children’s books at Macmillan. ahalsey.com
Malcolm Wong has lived and breathed digitally by design, with most of his waking hours spent online imbibing beautifully composed pixels. His design journey has spanned over a decade, in London and Singapore; his experience covers various areas of design from print, branding, interactive, web and apps.
Through working on this project, I've encountered some very talented people. And I appreciate the immense support from my family and handful of close friends, whenever the sheer amount of work (and yet, lack of money and time) got me down. A big Thank You to Ricardo and Annie from Reedsy, for invaluable advice and for connecting us with our newest team member: our lovely book designer, Ashley. When it comes to helping out a new kid on the block, the good people at We The People have been real supportive. Thanks also goes to Caitlyn Tan for being the pretty model for the back cover of my book (initial design), and her mama Christina Khoo. Photo credits go to my partner Malcolm. The magical piece of music you hear in the beginning of the campaign video was taken from Farewell to the Innocent, a song by Ars Sonor. Most of the music featured in our videos is by the amazing Ketsa.

When we're realistic about the minimum amount of money we need, the chances of carrying our vision to fruition become much higher. Our goal of $7,000 was set after careful calculations to cover the costs of a collector's first print run of 500 copies.
You'll be getting a full-length novel accompanied by lovingly curated images. I'd like to create a world for you to enter, not just through words on a page but through an experience that engages multiple senses, and to change the way we read.
THE HEARTFELT THANKS
We appreciate how nice it can be to receive a nicely packaged gift and we'd like you (or the person you're gifting) to experience that with any A I R purchase that you make.
Risks and challenges
This was a project that grew into something big and greedy; it always asked more of me, my time and energy. It was a small seed, an idea that I really wanted to communicate in words, then quickly became a whole lot of work. Turns out writing (well) is hard! After at least twenty different iterations, my editor Marc and I have finally settled on a final manuscript. The story is complete, the illustrations polished and ready to go. The final step is to send the work to the printers, before we can put the book on shelves and in Kindles. Going to print, and the tremendous amount of work that comes before that, costs money.
As an illustrator who works better with pen and paint than with mouse, I had a lot of mentoring and plain help from my partner Malcolm. When it comes to creating digitally, he has helped me to level up so much.
One of the concerns I'd briefly had was how graphic some of the scenes can be; the adult content of the story made me wonder if that would limit my reach. But I believe that every piece of creative work has its intended audience and if I was too concerned with pleasing everyone, I wouldn't please anyone at all. This is not a gratuitous novel. It is about identity and the connections we make along our personal journey. I would love for you to be able to enjoy the fruits of our labor. With your support, I can do things like pay myself and my collaborators (my brilliant editors and co-designers). Your support also means the difference between a sad book party and a rocking book launch.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
