A year ago, I left the corporate world to pursue a living through the various Magic-related projects I’ve taken on, including Magic Pro Tour coverage, article-writing, draft videos, and of course, the Limited Resources podcast. I have made it through the first year intact and solvent, but to cover the growing expenses of producing a high-quality show and to ensure another year (and hopefully beyond) of being a full-time Magic content creator, I needed to take additional steps. Thus, a Kickstarter was born. I have built a budget for the year, and I’m seeking funding support from listeners to meet it, many of whom have been asking for years for a way to give back to the show. Well folks, now’s your chance!
We talk often on the show about “value” and how you should seek it in a game of Magic. You should seek it from your entertainment as well, and I’d like you to consider for a moment how much value you derive from Limited Resources. Whether we have increased the number of booster packs you’ve won through insightful strategy advice and card evaluations, helped you through a long commute or cumbersome task, or simply increased the number of smiles you’ve cracked each week, we hope Limited Resources has added significant value to your life. If we have, please take this opportunity to say thanks with a pledge.
Additionally, I saw a Kickstarter as a great opportunity to make some cool Limited Resources merchandise available to the community—another thing the LR Faithful have been asking for! Keeping on the “value” theme, I have committed to delivering some fantastic backer rewards to those who pledge as a way to thank you for your continued support. This Kickstarter is the first place to get your LR-branded deck boxes and sleeves before they go on sale to the general public, and there are some awesomely-unique rewards on top of that for higher-level backers.
If the Kickstarter is funded, weekly episodes of Limited Resources will be produced like we do now, with a promise of 48 episodes for the year (but more likely 51-52 episodes like we have the last few years).
First: Thank you!
Thanks to your incredible support, the LR Kickstarter was funded in just over 4 hours! You guys are awesome. I had some ideas for stretch goals sketched out before the Kickstarter began that I hoped I would need, but I wasn’t expecting to need them on the second day! In the few days it took to work out the details, you met three of them!
$15k: LR Playmats! You have asked, we have answered. I have been working with LR logo designer Justin Treadway and we have a nearly-finalized Limited Resources playmat drawn up and ready to send to the manufacturer. I will be posting a picture of the final design via an update once it's ready.
You can add a Limited Resources playmat to any Value-level pledge or higher for an additional $40.00! Just add $40.00* to your new or existing pledge at or above the Value level, and you'll receive a Limited Resources playmat before it’s available anywhere else, along with everything else at that level. **UNLOCKED**
*International backers, please add $45.00
$20k: LR Back Catalog! I recently started hosting and distributing Limited Resources on my own through lrcast.com. As a result, not all episodes of the show have been uploaded yet—the process requires more time and resources than you might think—but as a result of the early success of this Kickstarter, it shall be done!**UNLOCKED**
$25k: Signoff Compilation! I will take every signoff from the whole year and put them into one bonus episode of LR at the end of the year. This special episode will also include a behind the scenes look at how Brian comes up with the signoffs. **UNLOCKED**
$30k: Retro Block Primers: Marshall and Brian will record four additional episodes, each a Retro Block Primer show. They will dive deep into an older format (likely one available on MTGO) and cover the basic strategies, hidden gems, trap cards, and sleeper tactics for that format. **UNLOCKED**
$35k: LR Videos! Marshall will record six Constructed videos to be put up on lrcast.com using either Modern or Standard decks. Marshall and Brian will team up for either a live stream or a recorded video for each set in Theros block!
Additionally, Marshall will do a draft stipulation video, with the stipulation chosen by Jon Loucks! That's right—Jon will choose a set of criteria which Marshall must stick to as he drafts. A previous example was making Elixir of Immortality the sole win condition for the deck... it could get ugly. **UNLOCKED**
$40k: Pro Month on LR! Once per week for four straight episodes, LR will feature a Magic pro discussing the topic of YOUR choosing! Luis Scott-Vargas, Sam Black, Patrick Chapin, and David Williams will come on and talk about whatever subject *you* choose! Topics will be chosen via a poll on the lrcast.com blog.
Risks and challenges
If the LR Kickstarter is funded, I will be shipping out the deckboxes, sleeves and other rewards personally. However, as these products were special-ordered, the exact delivery date of the product is not set. The order is scheduled to be delivered by November, but since that is out of my hands, it's a possible challenge.
Additionally, if we run out of either the deckboxes or sleeves, more will have to be ordered. In the unlikely event that this happens it may delay the delivery of some rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Legion Supplies. They have a great reputation for quality products, and have worked with some of the biggest names in the industry for their custom products.
Yes! While the Kickstarter is meant to be the first place to obtain your custom LR goods, it will not be the last. After the backers have gotten their merchandise, it will all be available for sale through normal retail outlets.
If you are short on cash or just not into the whole Kickstarter thing, you will be able to purchase the merchandise at that time.
