About

Introducing KinemaPhoto - an innovative Adobe Photoshop Extension designed to help you create your cinemagraph art and edit video within Photoshop easily.

If you have ever tried to make a cinemagraph/gif or edit video in Photoshop, you know how frustrating Photoshop's video editing interface can be.  And if you have tried making cinemagraphs in other applications, then you also know that you constantly have to export part of the project into Photoshop to touch-up the photograph.

KinemaPhoto organizes and focuses the key video editing functionality within Photoshop to make it easier to create cinemagraphs.  KinemaPhoto provides you with a cinemagraph creation workflow that makes it easier to edit and manipulate video, while following the proper steps to easily create your cinemagraph masterpiece.

I chose Photoshop as the platform because:

  • It will work on both MACs and PCs. There is no solution that works on both platforms.
  • You can immediately harness Photoshop's powerful photo editing and video editing tools without having to export your image to another platform
  • Updating over time can be quick and easy. It also means that as Adobe introduces new features and tools for editing photos, you'll be able to use them on KinemaPhoto immediately.

No matter what, I am committed to finishing the development of this tool to create cinemagraphs quickly.

See below for some of the core functions of KinemaPhoto and some examples of how it can speed up your cinemagraph creation workflow in Photoshop.

This first version of the extension will focus on speeding up your workflow and keep things relatively simple. This extension is designed to cut your cinemagraph creation time in Adobe Photoshop by 50% (compared to not using any other extensions or actions).

The Adobe Photoshop Extension provides a standard workflow to help you create your cinemagraphs quickly with the following feature set:

While Adobe Photoshop has some create video capabilities, it is not a full featured video editing tool.  Editing clips can be tricky. This module will help you optimize the selection and creation of the clip you want to use in your cinemagraph.

  • 'Load Clip' will help you load the video into photoshop.
  • 'Load Clip' will also check to make sure the video will work with photoshop and optimized for creating a cinemagraph (e.g., the video is not too long)
  • 'Set Start' will mark the beginning where you want your cinemagraph to start
  • 'Set End' will mark where you want your cinemagraph to end
  • 'Trim Clip' will trim your video footage to the markers created by 'Set Start' and 'Set End'
  • 'Reset Clip' will give you the ability to start over if you think the clip you trimmed was not ideal

The still frame is the area you do not want to move in the Cinemagraph. There are many different ways to select the still and to mask it. The methodology we propose will make it easy to use and see the mask in photoshop to create your still.

  • 'Select Still' will create a new layer for the area of the image you don't want to move 'the still frame'
  • 'Create Mask' will open a masking dialog to help you mask and show the area you want to be move in the cinemagraph
  • 'Hide Mask' will toggle whether the mask is visible

The repeat or loop is the key to a cinemagraph having that ethereal quality. This is what differentiates it from other creative videos like Instagram's 'boomerang' or having a straight video. Selecting the right loop and fade will help your video play continuously and capture the attention of your viewers.

  •  'Create Loop Layer' will create the loop for your cinemagraph. The default will be to have the video repeat itself
  • 'Reverse Selected' will allow you to have your loop layer play itself in reverse. This will allow you to create loops that will play forward, and then play in reverse. This is one of the trickiest things to do when manipulating video in photoshop, but we have a methodology that works making it easy instead of having to save and reupload the video, as in other methods.
  • 'Set Fade' Select how long you want the fade to be for the loop. (Only matters for videos that repeat themselves.)
  • 'Add or Delete Loop' - Determine how many times you want the video to loop

One of the trickiest parts of any creative product is determining how to balance light, shadow, and color.  This module is dedicated to help you put the finishing touches on your masterpiece.

  • 'Loop Color Grading' - Will loop through random color grades. We will also add some standard color grades that I use on my cinemagraphs to help them come to life.
  • 'Add Curves' - Adds a curves layer to help you manipulate the colors, lights, and shadows as you see appropriate.
  • 'Add Levels' - Adds a levels layer to help you manipulate the colors, lights, and shadows as you see appropriate.
  • 'Add Vignette' - Helps you add maniputable two-layer vignette where you can choose which area of your photo you want to brighten and which areas you want to darken.

Exporting video can be tricky in Adobe Photoshop. But this module will check that your video is optimized for export and help you select the best options for exporting.

'Export GIF' - Export a full-sized GIF of your project. GIFs are helpful when embedding in webpages where you can't embed video

'Export MP4' - Export the video in mp4 format based on the selected video options.

Do you remember the day you saw your first cinemagraph? What you were looking at wasn't quite a video, but wasn't a picture either.

Cinemagraphs were invented by photographer Jamie Beck and web designer Kevin Burg in 2011. Ever since they started, cinemagraphs have boomed in:

  • online advertising
  • websites
  • social media
  • blog postings
  • personal use
  • commercial use

Personally, I wanted to make my cinemagraphs using Adobe Photoshop, watching every tutorial I could find.  The outcome was great, but it took too long to create them.

Therefore, I thought about creating an extension for adobe Photoshop to make it easier to create cinemagraphs in Adobe Photoshop.

More tutorials exist for creating cinemagraphs. Cinemagraphs have exploded in popularity with advertisers, bloggers, influences, and major brands using them to increase engagement across their customers.

Entire communities have developed around creating cinemagraphs. (By the way, I belong to the Gallereplay Community, you should definitely check them out if you want to try sell your work.)

There are some applications that exist, but the great ones are expensive and focus on one platform, and the cheaper ones are not as full featured as you would like.

Become a KinemaPhoto Beta tester and receive a copy earlier than everyone else. You'll be able to provide feedback and extra input on features to be included in the final release or at a later date.

Early bird backers will receive KinemaPhoto at a significantly reduce price when it is released in February.  Thank you for being such an early supporter as I finish this product.

You will receive v1.0 of KinemaPhoto at $30 off the expected retail price.

Receive version v1.0 of KinemaPhoto at $20 off the expected retail price. But this time, you also get a snazzy 100% cotton white shirt with the KinemaPhoto logo.

My name is Kofi. I am a photographer and cinemagrapher creator who has been shooting for over 10 years. I have a passion for photography, and am often inspired by some of the greatest photographers of recent memory ... from Ansel Adams to Nick Brandt to Peter Lindbergh.

KinemaPhoto is a project that I have wanted to start for years, and I can't wait to finally make this project a reality.

Risks and challenges

Risk #1: The timelines are not met because development takes longer than expected or there are some critical areas to fix that are discovered during testing.

Mitigation #1: I am teaming up with a professional adobe extension developer who has developed video-based extension in the past.

RIsk #2: Funding goal is not met

Mitigation #2: All backers would receive their money back. I am personally committed to bringing this extension to market so even without the kickstarter backing, I still plan on launching KinemaPhoto in 2019. (A good chunk of the anticipated development cost has already been paid.)

Risk #3: The developer is no longer able to complete the project

Mitigation #3: There were other development firms I was considering, and would have to revist the project with them. This could extend the amount of time to delivery by 3 - 6 months.
