About

The Why

Our goal is to get one of these devices into every healthcare facility and food service facility nationwide as we can to stop the spread of harmful bacteria and infections, including Ebola, C.Diff., the Flu and all other viruses that currently thrive on poor hand hygiene standards.  Washing your hands for a minimum 20 seconds as stipulated by the CDC and health authorities nationwide can stop the spread of harmful bacteria.   Hospital Acquired Infections, or HAI's, is the 4th leading cause of death in the United States today, and 20,000 cases each year are directly linked to poor hand hygiene.  When looking at how to prevent viruses such as Ebola and C. Diff, the first thing ALWAYS stated in guidelines is proper hand hygiene!  Our device can cut these terrible hand hygiene compliance and infection rate statistics down by up to 60% and is extremely cost effective for hospitals, restaurants, and any industry where hand hygiene is a must.

Food borne illness is no joke.  I say that because I couldn't help but chuckle when I read a study about restaurants causing diarrhea to their guests because of poor and hygiene.   I was being juvenile and silly, but as I read further, I realized quickly this is no joke at all.  Apparently, thousands of individuals actually die of diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and other such symptoms directly due to food borne illness and food poisoning every year.  A very high percentage of these cases are attributed directly to poor hand hygiene in the kitchens and prep areas of these restaurants.

With the recent press surrounding flu epidemics, ebola, C.Diff, and other common illnesses gaining rapid exposure throughout the nation, the first method of fighting the spread of the disease and protecting oneself is always listed as hand hygiene.  But this isn't as simple as it may seem, because studies show that only about 18% of individuals are actually practicing proper hand hygiene if they are doing it at all, and only 40% of trained professionals are doing it correctly.  The two most important factors to hand hygiene have been deemed as timing and friction, and this was determined by multiple legitimate studies.  The longer the scrub time and more thorough the scrubbing and friction created, the more bacteria is removed.  Our device makes that process easier and allows people to correct poor habits by having a timer directly in their face.

If you think hand sanitizers are your saving grace, think again.  Viruses such as C. Diff have become immune to hand sanitizers and can only be removed with hand hygiene via soap and water for the correct amount of time.  Viruses are building up immunity to hand sanitizers and because we have gotten lazy and wanted a quick and convenient fix for hand hygiene, we are creating super bugs that are harder to kill.  It is very much like your doctor just prescribing you antibiotics on a whim when they aren't necessary.  This creates a problem with strains of viruses and illness becoming stronger and resistant.

The Who

We are a tiny company of only two people that have been trying to get this project off the ground for 7 years, and taking no pay whatsoever because we believe in the cause of saving lives.  In fact, the owner has sunk in more than $200,000 of his own money to raise the standards of hand hygiene in our modern world of today.  This is a story of the American dream very much alive and well and how hard work and determination will pay off.

We desperately need your help! We are broke!
We desperately need your help! We are broke!

The owner and operator has a food service background and worked his way up literally from a dishwasher up the cooking chain to a corporate chef in 15 years.  He has taken his entire life savings and cashed in his 401K to fuel this dream of saving lives via the SaniTimer® and proper hand hygiene and getting hand hygiene in the public eye but we need help and exposure.  This long journey lead us to Kickstarter and to the hope that others see the value in what we are doing and can pledge assistance to help us get this technology in every single hand hygiene situation where cleanliness matters.  Saving lives is the ultimate goal, but we need help.  We have come an extremely long way and see the finish line, but like many people with hopes and dreams, we need that extra push right when it gets the toughest to nudge us closer to the finish line.

The What

After looking for reputable companies to help us design and bring the unit to manufacture, which was a tough journey as it was because everybody and their mother wants to take your money and give you nothing, we found a hero in the design and manufacturing industry.  We worked for an entire year on research and development, daily conference calls, trials, testing, fixing, then re-testing to finally get a working product which is very well made and does exactly what we wanted it to.  We have sold a few of them out of a tiny apartment office and gone to countless meetings.  We have completely drowned ourselves in the world of hand hygiene, going to infection control meetings monthly, medical symposiums to learn about diseases and issues such as Legionella, Ebola, C. Diff, and countless others.  We are not just a business trying to scratch out a living, we are hand hygiene advocates trying to save lives as we have both personally lost family to HAI cases in hospitals related to hand hygiene in years past.

Our whole marketing budget went to an APIC ad!

Our product was designed extremely well, and we accounted for so many things.  However, timing has become an unforeseen issue.  The timing on our device is pre-programmed to 30 seconds for two main reasons.  We didn't want users to have to worry over programming it and having to fiddle with it. We wanted to make it as easy and straight forward as possible.  Also, we conducted hand hygiene studies and workshops and they showed that users like to warm the water first, and typically take a few seconds to soap up and lather before getting under the water.  The CDC clearly states that the user has to be under the water and ACTUALLY SCRUBBING for a minimum of 20 seconds, so we set our timer for 30 seconds to give users ample time to start a lather, warm the water, and get back under for the full 20 second scrub.

Every time we have gone and met with restaurants, medical facilities, etc, one of their first questions has been "can we program the time?" , to which we have to say "no" since our SaniTimer® is already pre-programmed for 30 seconds to allow users to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds as recommended by the CDC and local health departments nationwide. We have learned that each organizations personal preferences or standards for hand hygiene differ from one another. Some facilities require a 3 minute surgical scrub and other facilities want a 60 second double wash time.  This has become so much an issue that we need to go back and create a programmable model.  However, we have exhausted all of our funds, literally.  Remember the days of living off Ramen noodles?  We are in our 30's with business degrees and graduate degrees back to eating Ramen and grabbing every sales meeting we can to try and sell the inventory we have now.  We are desperately trying to raise funds to add a programmable setting to the SaniTimer® so it can be used in every application.

Breakfast , lunch , and dinner... yum.... ish.
Breakfast , lunch , and dinner... yum.... ish.

We are asking for $100,000 as this is how much it will take to go back to design, change the tooling, source new parts, design the updated product, and create a small pocket of inventory so we can get back on the market,  We know it is a tall order, but with your help, we can bring hand hygiene to the world.  Our ultimate goal is to get local city governments and state governments to require this device for health code so that when you go to the hospital, or to a restaurant, you can be certain that the staff at EVERY establishment at least washed their hands correctly and will handle your food or your body with clean hands.

Risks and challenges

The project risks simply involve knowledge. People don't know that our product exists to help save lives nor do they truly know the implications behind poor hand hygiene. It isn't often thought about but affects us all daily. Our main obstacle at this point is letting people know we exist, letting them know the technology is fully patented and award winning, and to retrain bad hand hygiene habits in the world today.
