Hello! Thank you for checking out my Kickstarter project!
I am a photographer and installation artist living in Atlanta, GA. My Kickstarter goal is to partially fund the next installation/photograph in a series I've been working on for about 8 years. Each image in this series requires the total transformation of an empty room or space into its own conceptual reality. I was fortunate enough to have raised half of the funding for my previous image and installation (Tornado, pictured above) thanks to Kickstarter and the amazing generosity of friends and strangers alike. I have turned to Kickstarter again for help with my current project which will also be both an installation and a photograph. I received a grant from Flux Projects http://fluxprojects.org/ to build the installation titled, "Don't Forget Your Funeral," which will be featured during Flux Atlanta's one night public art extravaganza on October 6th of this year. While the construction grant for the event is awesome, I still need to raise more funding for film (I am using an 8x10 film camera to capture this scene), development, lighting equipment, model fees, helpers, and to cover some of my constructing time. A bit extra is added to pay Kickstarter fees as well as costs associated with fulfilling rewards.
What you can expect to see in the Scene and Photograph:
The scene itself will feature a bedroom with two antique single beds (I will be using beds that belonged to my grandmother and grandfather). Nature will play a significant role, as it does in virtually all my work, and the room will be filled with many interesting props. There will be dark thorny branches climbing the walls and running through the space and the walls will be painted a blue/green sea foam color (probably inspired by Downton Abbey!) to contrast with the darkness of the branches. The models, one on each bed, will be creating the scene around themselves. One will be crafting various kinds of birds from the pages of books and the other will be painting them black and adding them to the ceiling, which will be completely full of black birds, some constructed and some bought. Some of the birds, once added to the ceiling, will appear to be transforming into real birds. Many unpainted birds will appear in the interior of the scene, some carrying in their mouths and claws little trinkets and objects "stolen" from around the room.
Info on Rewards:
Along with refrigerator magnets, postcards and prints of the finished image, I am also offering some of the actual handmade birds from the scene as rewards. Also, backers can send me a trinket or something small (a piece of jewelry, a scrap of fabric, a key, etc.) to be carried by a bird in the scene. Below are examples of some of the smaller birds which I am making by hand. These birds (hummingbirds, finches and swallows) are available as rewards at different levels.
