Well another exciting month has flown by, so we have lots more to update you all on.
Physical Items

Like last month, many of the physical items we commissioned have continued to arrive. First the big one; the PCBs!! They’ve all landed safe and sound, and some initial random testing suggests they should all be good to go. We’ll now press on with our parallel flashing set-up ready for the game and also start the laborious job of putting all the PCBs in cartridges and labelling them.

Earlier than we expected we received 5 test pressings of the OST vinyl and it sounds great - just ask Toby the studio pug! The full vinyl production run has now been approved for manufacturing.

We also received some more labels for the various Mega Drive region variations, some sticker sheets for Kickstarter Edition backers and...

Mega Drive boxes, boxes, boxes!

We finally received our first batch of Mega Drive box covers and they look great! There are actually 18 variations in total, and we took the time to prepare a few of them for you all to take a look at. We’ve also been looking into reversible covers and can now confirm that Kickstarter Edition backers will receive an inlay featuring both Gonzalo and Derrick’s artwork. We’ve also had a few requests for the Japanese artwork on our PAL / NA compatible cartridge which we’re pleased to say is now available as an option on our BackerKit page:

More boxes!

We’re really excited to announce that we’ve partnered with Strictly Limited Games (https://www.strictlylimitedgames.com) and that Xeno Crisis will be coming to the Nintendo Switch and Sony PS4 as limited edition physical releases! We’re still finalising the details, but we will keep you posted of when they become available for pre-order.

Neo Geo Pre-Order

Talking of pre-orders, don’t worry Neo Geo fans - we have not forgotten about you, and will be opening up pre-orders for the AES, MVS and CD versions in the next couple of weeks. If you want to be notified as soon as pre-orders are open then please be sure to fill out our survey here:

Development

Due to popular demand and some initial feedback from testing we decided to add a melee attack for both marines. So we managed to convince Henk Nieborg to take a break from his next project (which looks amazing!) and create us some awesome melee animations. It’s a great addition and really comes in useful when you’re running low on ammo or just want to finish an enemy in style! In some cases it’s actually more advantageous to use the melee attack, but we’ll let you find those out…

Alongside the melee attack a number of last minute tweaks and refinements have been added, steadily increasing the quality of Xeno Crisis. The modern console build is now feature complete and going through the initial rounds of localisation and general QA testing, and is looking great. With the majority of physical items for the release sorted over the last couple of months and Matt’s health steadily improving, his development time is ramping up heavily on the Mega Drive build as he plays catch up with the modern console version.

As always thank you for all the great comments and feedback, please keep them coming!

@Alain Montiel - You might have missed the updates over the past few months, but our Mega Drive / Dreamcast coder Matt had a pretty nasty accident in the summer, sustaining a serious head injury in our office of all places, so that affected our development schedule quite significantly. We've also added several extras to the game (including a new area) which has extended the development further too.

@Psyance QL - We think you'll be impressed as us with the sound effects that Savaged Regime has created for Xeno Crisis - he certainly knows what he's doing, and they really help lift the game even more! I'm glad you agree about the inclusion of the melee attack - it was a great feature in games such as Rambo 3 and Shock Troopers, and it's proving to be an equally useful and interesting addition to Xeno Crisis. There's times when it's quicker to dispatch an enemy with the melee attack or it might just be that you've run out of ammo. You'll need to choose wisely when to use it though. :) Anyway, we're about to release another update today featuring a new PC gameplay video demonstrating the sound effects and speech, so we hope you enjoy it!

@groovenik - We're making good progress on all fronts but we're not able to commit to a firm release date just yet - we're aiming for the first quarter of 2019 though. And yes, backers of the digital Switch and PS4 versions will soon be able to upgrade to a physical version ahead of general release - look out for an email about that shortly.

@Banni Ibrahim - The cutscenes are present on all versions, including the Genesis. :) The main difference between the Genesis and modern versions are extra speech and sound effects that we just don't have room for on the Genesis cart, as well as a few other minor touches such as bullet cases, point notifications, achievements, saved settings and high scores, and a few frames and colours that the Genesis couldn't handle.

@Cireza - Hey Fabien! It would be a nice touch, but we think that the procedurally generated maps and rooms, and random enemy / item placement already offer a great deal of variety. :) Your palette swaps were great to see though - it has got us thinking about something. ;)

@Adam McClendon - Hey Adam, we're a bit behind where we aniticapted, so we're aiming for a Q1 2019 release now - things are going well though, and we have a big update that we'll be posting later today. :)

Wasn't this supposed to ship for Genesis / Megadrive back in October? Whats the reason for the delay?

So far everything looks and sounds so good and I hope that the sound FX are going to be satisfying, shooters hugely benefit from good sound FX. And the melee attack is a great addition, reminds me of Rambo III also on Mega Drive where it's useful to further increase your score.

Another cool update, keep up the good work!

Are you all any closer to a confirmed ship/launch date?

Really wish a physical Switch edition was a part of the Kickstarter, but understand why it wasn't. Might gift my Switch digital code and pick up a physical copy instead. Please let us know when Strictly Limited Games plans to make these available for ordering. Even better would be a limited window that Kickstarter backers could secure a physical copy before it goes public (aka first come, first served).

Physical release for Switch and PS4!! Oh yeah!

Oh wow, I had no idea this was being produced for Neo-Geo too, I wish I had one of those systems... but the system and games are just way out of my pricerange. That cutscene shown in the last image obviously can't be displayed on a Genesis, but is it going to be in the more modern system versions of the game? Come to think of it, is there any sort of chart that details what differences different versions of the game will have?

I'll be getting the MVS + ROM, and Nintendo Switch physical versions!!! This kickstarter is getting better and better with each update.

In the end, will you be using some palette swaps for the environments to add some variety when replaying ? Otherwise, great work. Going to pick a Neo Geo CD version as well :)

Everything looks awesome! I may have missed it but is the digital release still on track for January?
