About

I have a passion for changing people's attitudes about food allergies. Having been on the receiving end of the frustrated 'i'd have to check with the kitchen' and the rolling of eyes, I want to change the conversation. My goal is to help restaurants to understand that being allergy friendly makes good business sense, and to help allergy sufferers feel comfortable visiting a restaurant with the confidence that they will leave safe and happy.

1 in 100 adults in Australia suffer from a food allergy, and for many of them, it is very difficult to find a restaurant that will cater for them. If you do find one that claims to have Gluten Free, Nut Free, or Dairy Free meals etc, you still risk going home feeling sick due to the lack of rules surrounding allergens in the food safety laws. I have heard many stories from my friends who have gone home vomiting, suffering from other allergic reactions, in some cases needing a visit to the hospital after a meal in a restaurant.

My plan is this: set up a website to allow restaurant goers to rate the restaurant on their 'allergy friendliness' based on their specific allergy. The results will be searchable by region, and scores, as well as cuisine, so that, for example, if a coeliac wanted to find a GF friendly italian restaurant in the Melbourne CBD, they can search for one. From the results they can look at reviews from other user experiences, and the overall score of Gluten-Free Friendliness.

My goal for restaurants, is to make them more aware of food allergies, and the impact on their customers if their staff don't take allergen request seriously, but also to give restaurants that do the right thing the recognition they deserve. The end goal is to start an Awards system, for those restaurants that do take care of their allergy suffering patrons, with a smile.

Please pledge as much as you can, and share this campaign with your friends and family, so that together, we can get this site up and running!

Risks and challenges

Once my project is successfully funded, and the website is up and running, the biggest challenge will be to get people to use it, the website will be useless without reviews. To overcome this, I have started a community on Facebook, of people in Australia that suffer from a food allergy. I have 320 people that have followed the page, from all over Australia, in 10 days. I will invite these followers to head to the website each time they visit a restaurant.
