“Games mean many things to many people; to me they are an art form of great potential beauty. Just as a composer’s creation is brought to life by the performing musicians, a game inventor’s creation is brought to life by the players of the game. When the creation is inspired and the players are talented, a true work of art results." Sid Sackson (1920-2002)
This GAMES OF ART Kickstarter project presents three new and different games for which Backers may support & pledge: Games of Art, a book of games ~ Petite Pastiche ~ Fantastiqa: The Rucksack Edition. These games all feature and use wonderful classic & modern art in their design and their game play. When you pledge, you may select any of these games individually, or you may bundle them in various ways for greater savings.
We also are offering "Add-Ons" of Cubist and Rococo, both new games which take place in very different artistic settings. You can add on either or both of these games, at great prices, to pledges for the GAMES OF ART project. ~~~OR~~~
Check out the $140 Level & get all 5 games plus free US shipping!
NEWS FLASH! Fantastiqa adds FLEX --see below under ADD-ONS and take a look at Update #7!
Want an extra copy of Games of Art? If you add on $15 to any pledge of $25 or more, you will receive one copy of Games of Art.
You can add-on the previously-released (and getting hard to find) expansions for Fantastiqa, either individually or as a bundle, as follows:
4-A -- Treasure Hunt Expansion $10
4-B -- Events Deck Expansion $ 8
4-c -- Special Delivery Expansion $ 8
All three bundled together $25
More information about each of these expansions is available at www.fantastiqa.com. This offer is only available in the US (where shipping is free). If international backers are interested, there will be an extra cost for shipping, which you will need to inquire about. Sorry for the nuisance.
THE NEW FANTASTIQA EXPANSIONS -- For $30 you will get the six new expansions to Fantastiqa (3 sets--there is a lot of info about these below in this column) compatible with either the Rucksack Edition or the Enchanted Edition. These can be shipped anywhere in the US for free ( a $49 value). International backers, please see the Shipping Chart below. NOTE: This is the same as the $30 Pledge Level. We also set these up as an Add-On for those who want to pledge for Games of Art, or Petite Pastiche, etc. but you already own Fantastiqa: The Enchanted Edition and you only want to get the new Fantastiqa expansions. You can always clarify what you have pledged for (add-ons, etc.) via the survey you will receive after this KS project ends.
CUBIST expansion cards -- all 18 cards -- $10
Get all 18 Cubist expansion cards ( 8 extra Installations; 6 extra Museums; and 4 Studio Cards) by adding $10 to your existing pledge of $20 or more.
Here are the two Kickstarter Exclusive cards from the Enchanted Version Kickstarter project (we rationalize that since this too is a Kickstarter project for Fantastiqa that we can safely offer them here) at $3 for the set of 6 cards, three each of:
Petite Pastiche expansions!
Check out Update #3 for details. $3 for either EXP #1 or #2, or a total of $5 for both EXPANSIONS #1 and #2.
SIX NEW characters for Fantastiqa ($5 for each set; or $20 for all six). A set consists of nine initial starting cards; one 4' by 4" player placard; and one standee representing your character. Make your choices from these pictures and the survey at the end of the KS project will allow you to tell us exactly your choices.
ADD-ON #10 -- FLEX: A Fantastiqal Landscapes Expansion, $15 (see Update #7)
Alf Seegert describes FLEX:
"From Fantastiqa's inception I had hoped to make use of multiple Gem colors in a fun set-collection mechanic. In preparation for such a mechanic, Rick and Gryphon Games made sure to offer 6 unique colors of Gems in the game. But no matter how hard I worked, this mechanic never quite came together (even though Fantastiqa still came with multi-colored Gems). This was also true of an "Epic Quest" involving all six Regions which I could never get to work right. To my surprise and delight, Games of Art has catalyzed development of both these ideas -- along with others -- culminating in FANTASTIQAL LANDSCAPES, a vast new Expansion Set containing three interlocking expansions."
We are very flexible with add-ons and levels for this Project because of the range and variety of what we are offering. So if you don't see what you are looking for, please write me a Message (preferable to a Comment) and I will try my best to accommodate you. Rick, for Eagle Games
Games of Art is a book of games by Sid Sackson in which players use colored markers to collectively create their own works of art in the style of seven Modern Art masters.
All Kickstarter-backed copies of Sid Sackson's Games of Art will have the words "First Edition" printed on the cover. This exclusive printing will be available ONLY to those Backers who pledge for Games of Art during this 30-day Kickstarter Project!
Games of Art, a book of games, includes seven classic games all designed by Sid Sackson. Each game can be played in 15 to 60 minutes by 2, 3, or 4 players (ages 8+), each player wielding one of the four colored dry erase markers provided in the package. Each page is laminated and fully erasable ensuring great replayability. Gryphon Games is confident that you will find each of these games challenging and fun as well as educational! Each game includes a short biography of the title artist, followed by short, illustrated rules (less than one page per game) and a full-page diagram of the game. Teachers and players are encouraged to copy the diagrams so that everyone can play these games simultaneously. Included are games named after and reminiscent of the styles of the iconic modern artists Piet Mondrian, Paul Klee, Joan Miro, Robert and Sonia Delaunay, Jean Arp, Ferdinand Springer, and Victor Vasarely.
WARNING: Each time you play the game you will be creating a work of art that you will be tempted to frame and hang on your wall!
When Sid Sackson passed away in 2002, the world lost one of the most creative and prolific game designers of all time. In his distinguished life, Sid Sackson created a myriad of truly brilliant games, remarkable for their ingenuity and playability. Over 50 Sid Sackson titles have already been published. Gryphon Games has dedicated itself to the mission of reprinting many of these now out-of-print masterpieces. It is also combing the archive of unpublished prototypes he left behind for yet-to-be-printed masterpieces.
Games of Art, a book of games, was previously published as a collection of games in book form as Beyond Tic Tac Toe (1975). Gryphon has re-published it in 2014 as Games of Art to honor Sid Sackson's legacy.
Petite Pastiche gives players an opportunity to mix colors (using palette cards) and re-create the palettes used by 23 different classical European and American artists in creating 23 of their masterpieces painted over a six century period of time.
A world of beautiful colors comes to life as players complete commissions that picture some of the finest European and American art works from the past six centuries. The word pastiche is used in the fields of literature and art to refer to something that is an imitation or recreation of an earlier work, often as a respectful homage or tribute to the original. In this game, players are making pastiches by mixing colors and recreating some of the palette colors used to create the original paintings of the masters. Each player starts with two personal commissions on her wooden easels. There are also four paintings in the Gallery that anyone may attempt to complete as well. Explore the paintings, palettes and pasts of the artists in this unique and challenging game for the whole family.
Petite Pastiche plays in 45 to 60 minutes with 2-4 players, ages 10+.
Here is a very comprehensive review of the original version of Pastiche, by Enders Game on BGG, who describes the game as "a work of art in every respect, and the ideal family or gateway game": http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/630712
Note to owners of the original Pastiche game and Pastiche International. The game play in Petite Pastiche is virtually identical to your game. However, the Petite Edition is smaller, and the playing board has been eliminated. There also also approximately 2/3 the hex tiles, 2/3 the palette cards and 2/3 the commission cards in Petite Pastiche (but the wooden easels remain!)
PASTICHE won the very prestigious MENSA award in 2011!
Fantastiqa: The Rucksack Edition is set in a fantasy world of terrific 18th and 19th century art, portraying intrepid adventurers and the beasts they must subdue to pursue their quests.
Fantastiqa: Rucksack is a deck-building strategy game set in a fantastical landscape of dark forests, mist-shrouded highlands, and frozen wastes. As you and your foes journey around the table, you will subdue strange creatures and fulfill fabulous quests.
Each creature you encounter has both an ability and a vulnerability. Subdue it and recruit it as an ally! A subdued creature is added to your expanding deck of cards, making its special ability into your own! A defeated Enchantress will wield her beguiling charms to help you overcome wandering Knights. Knights will in turn subdue Dragons, adding their fiery breath to your cause! Combine the powers of different creatures and fulfill curious quests: send forth your Rabbits of Unusual Size to Nibble Through the Violin Strings of the Violent Vampire Volnar! Or deploy a party of web-slinging Spiders to String a Bridge Across the Chasm of Chaos! Some of the creatures you encounter carry precious gems, which you can spend to purchase powerful artifacts or summon mythical beasts to your aid.
You begin with a few household items, but you grow in power as you adventure and gather allies! By completing quests, you score victory points and claim other special rewards.
The world of FANTASTIQA changes every time you set up the game, so prepare for a new, exciting adventure each time you play!
FANTASTIQA: The Rucksack Edition plays in 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of players, which ranges from 2 to 4. It is easy to learn, yet challenging to master. Fantastiqa: The Rucksack Edition is fun for all ages, but the standard game is recommended for ages 9+. Special simplified rules are included for beginning players, as well as children aged 6+ with adult help.
The components are lavishly illustrated with fine art by Caspar David Friedrich, Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Theodor Kittelsen, Arthur Rackham, John William Waterhouse, John Bauer, Edward Burne-Jones, Francisco Goya, and others.
Note to owners of Fantastiqa: The Enchanted Edition. The game play of the Rucksack Edition is identical to the Enchanted Edition. The Rucksack Edition slims down the size of the box, and eliminates the main board and the card holder boards. All the same playing cards are present as the Enchanted Edition, but the Rucksack Edition has a total of 211 cards vs. 240 because there are fewer duplicate cards.

To add an "Add-On" to your pledge,...
...just add the amount called for (see below for each Add-On) to the amount of your pledge. There is no way to show exactly what you are adding on at the time you make your pledge. But don't worry about that! We will send a survey to you at the end of the Kickstarter campaign. That survey will ask you what add-ons your pledge covered. If you have any questions about this, write us a Message via Kickstarter or see Contact Us below.
ADD ON #1
Cubist is an Add-On to this Kickstarter project. If you add on $38 to any pledge of $1 or more to Games of Art, you will receive a copy of Cubist.
In Cubist you and your opponents are architects competing to build a grand and inspiring new Modern Art Museum, including its interior sculptures, or “installations.” Aptly enough, your building materials are cubes, or more precisely, dice!
On each turn you roll two dice and place them in your studio as raw materials for your cubist sculptures. From there you position these dice to complete commissioned installations for the museum. Dice with identical numbers can be stacked on top of one another to give your sculpture elevation and grandeur. Dice with adjacent numbers go next to one another to construct the unconventional footprints of modernism. You can press your luck by committing to a certain risky commission—hoping that no one else will complete it first—or play it safe by locking up your dice for later use. You can also use your dice to enlist the aid of masters of modern art like Juan Gris, Franz Marc and Olga Rozanova. Each installation you complete allows you to contribute dice to the building of the Museum itself.
You will have to sculpt cleverly but quickly to get the new Museum named after you!
Cubist plays in 30 to 45 minutes with 2 to 4 players ages 7+.
Here are the rules to Cubist.
ADD ON #2
Rococo is an Add-On to this Kickstarter project. If you add on $54 to any pledge of $1 or more to Games of Art, you will receive a copy of Rococo.
Rococo takes place in a world where holding lavish balls is quite trendy. Important personalities wrap up in noble coats and dresses, anxious to outshine one another. As the biggest event is coming up in just a few weeks, everyone is turning to you with their requests: an elegant coat here, a stunning dress there, or a donation to fund the fireworks at the event. Soon you realize that it's not just about your dressmaking business anymore – it's about managing the most prestigious ball of the era.
Each turn, you play one of your employee cards and let that employee perform a task: hire a new employee, buy resources, manufacture a coat or dress, or invest in the ball's decorations. But not every employee is up to every task, so you must choose and lead your employees wisely – especially since each employee grants a unique bonus and some of these bonuses generate prestige points. After seven rounds, the game ends with the big ball and a final scoring. Then you gain prestige points for certain employee bonuses and for coats and dresses that you rent out to guests at the ball as well as for decorations that you funded. The player who collected the most prestige points wins.
Here are the rules to Rococo.
Rococo plays in 60-90 minutes with 2-5 players, ages 10+

Gryphon Games (and its affiliate Eagle Games) has completed and delivered on over 22 Kickstarter projects to date, with 3 more fully-funded Gryphon Games currently in various stages of production and delivery. The Cubist project is being printed in late February; will be shipped from China in late March, and delivered to backers in early May (March was the prediction). Roll Through the Ages: The Iron Age requires the fabrication of many wood components and will start production in mid-February with an expected delivery date of June, 2014 (as predicted). Warage is in production in Belgium; slated to be shipped to our warehouse in February and delivered to Backers in March (as predicted). We communicate with our Backers through Updates to keep them informed of our progress. We deliver on our promises reliably and usually on time (the very few delays we have had were related to production issues which we have only, at best, partial control over).
To put it simply, you will get everything you are promised when you pledge to one of our Kickstarter Projects, and it will be delivered to you in as timely a manner as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
