Heroes' Tears is a very fun and creative new fantasy role playing game. It has a different character creation system that allows for much broader range of abilities than most game. The monsters are new and either completely original or reimagined from mythology. The races are diverse and can be fun to play as well as challenging to interact with in role play. Wrap all this into a rich world with great history, cultures playing off one another and a persistent problem with undead and you have a great game you'll come back to again and again. The purpose of this kickstarter is to help us with publishing costs. That's it! We have the game made, everything is ready to go. We just need your help to make it the last little bit of the way. Thanks so much for checking out our kickstarter and thank you so much for your support!
The character creation system is the balance of priorities. You have the categories of combat (toughness, weapon and armor skills), fortune (wealth, social position, access to equipment), magic (spellcasting) and skills (breadth of skills and how many points you get per level). Every character will strike a different balance. Will you be a skillful warrior or wealthy priest? How about a sword wielding fighting monk that took a vow of poverty? You decide!
We have spell casters that use arcane spells as science, sorcerers with only access to the natural magic of the elements that cast from their hearts, devout priests who channel the energy of our many feuding gods and monks that use the force of their own spirit to power their spells.
What race will your character be? Will you have scales or be covered in fur? Rippling with green muscle or will you be a naked skinned human? Rocky dwarf or ethereal elf?
Our contacts system inspires role play so that your players have a game reason to interact with the denizens of the world. It helps them to think of non-player characters as people with motivations and goals of their own who are sources of aid instead of simply obstacles.
The world has gone through an ancient magical upheaval that tore open the sky and bathes everything in death energy. As a consequence undead are much more common than in other settings. So much so that there are no graveyards here and all bodies are burned or face rising again. You still end up bashing moaning, hungry corpses but society adapts and protects themselves. This means that many of the standard trope adventures that bore you in other settings don't exist here.
The monsters aren't just undead, though there are a lot of them. We have complete ecologies of elemental creatures starting from food sources (which are sometimes adventurers) through apex predators. We also tried to think out the ancient myths and adapt the creatures as they would make sense in their environment.
Treasure is also different from what you may be used to. In this world there are no permanent magical items. For the greater magics you have spirits or elementals that have been stuffed into an item and it uses them as its power source. This is pretty unpleasant for the spirit and if the item can be destroyed they will escape, sometimes to wreak vengeance on its user.
We've been really fortunate to work with some of the best artists in fantasy and they bring to life all our crazy imaginings. Even Dwarves riding on elephant sized snails.
The world is rich in detail and history. You can make friends or foes with many different types of people, from the six ethnicities of man to the 12 other player races. Each of these races figures into the tapestry of the world in ways that may surprise you but that will make sense when you think about them.
You have opportunities to treat non-player races as friends or foes as you choose. Some tend towards the aggressive and some just want to be left alone.
So join with us on this journey. Support Heroes' Tears and explore the world yourself. We welcome you.
Once you've decided to support us please know you have our everlasting thanks! This project has been a source of fun and pride for decades and seeing it come to fruition is truly amazing. We can't thank you enough for becoming our partner in bringing the game to life. All of our rewards are cumulative so if you donate $100 you get that reward as well as all rewards for smaller donations. Thanks again and have an awesome day!
Risks and challenges
The major obstacles will be timing. We're launching at DragonCon over Labor Day Weekend! The Player's Primer is with our graphic designer being laid out right now. He should finish around Memorial Day when that book gets sent over to the printer. We aren't worried about that one. The graphic designer will then start on The Storyteller's Atlas which is the book you need to run the game. If he finishes at the end of June then we'll have two months to print. Shouldn't be a problem but sometimes you hit snags. If we don't make the even deadline then we'll just deliver later than we hoped. I don't expect that though, I believe we have plenty of time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
