About

SouthFarthing Adventures was first developed as a diversionary tactic. We often travel by car to visit family and many weekends find ourselves with three to four hour road trips. The children were becoming increasingly reliant on the on-board entertainment system that came with our minivan. While watching movies is fun - and frankly, a good way to get everyone quiet so that my wife and I can have a conversation - it shouldn’t be the default automotive activity (God forbid we might PARENT a little bit). So this game was developed as a way to entertain and engage with our kids while allowing them to be creative, explore a fantasy world, and maybe impart some good moral lessons along the way.

Based loosely on other fabulously successful role-playing experiences and online games, the characters interact in a fantasy/medieval setting, encountering imaginary creatures and amazing people in an exciting world of magic and imagination. But unlike these games, SouthFarthing Adventures was developed from the ground up to be morally excellent. You won’t be afraid to let your adolescents and teens play. There’s none of the demonology or excessive occult involvement that many other game systems rely upon. There aren’t multiple Gods, strange and violent religions, or situations where a player has to act out morally questionable - or outright immoral - fantasies. Creativity and non-violent solutions are encouraged. And while it’s the most fun for you and your kids/teens to play together, you won’t have to worry if they play it on their own and with friends.

SouthFarthing Adventures also easy to play anywhere. At minimum, you’ll only need the instructions, a sheet of paper and two standard six-sided dice as found in any ordinary board game (and of course the deluxe version of this game). Ideally the game consists of a Leader and from four to six players, but it can be played with less or more with a few simple modifications. Players can enjoy the same narrative storyline for months at the kitchen table or just a short one-hour pick-up-game while waiting at the airport.

I had no idea that it was going to be so popular, or indeed so fun. Our twelve year old son started to share the game with his friends, Boy Scout Troop, Youth Group, etc. and now I have young people coming up to me on a continual basis begging me to run a game of SouthFarthing Adventures. Somehow we’ve touched a nerve. These kids are looking for something fun to do in a group that is wholesome yet exciting... fun and creative... and easy to play.

I would like to publish this game both electronically and in hard copy. The player's guide is totally written and edited. I have yet to complete the Leader's Guide, and many of the pre-made adventures. I need time to finish writing these things. After that, I need to hire an illustrator (I cannot draw my way out of a paper bag), build a marketing web site, and get it published (which requires some up front costs as well).
