Our team consists of world famous astronauts, writers, designers, programmers, artists and architects who allow us to construct a game that will be the most immersive virtual representation of our universe to date. Space Pioneer is best described as a space sim, with a heavy dose of real time strategy and city building mechanics. Arguably the most unique feature of our game is the player's ability to switch between two different viewpoints at will -- you can utilize a top down RTS perspective or switch to a more personal third person viewpoint, wherein you can directly control a customizable and upgradable command ship. There has never been a team like this in the video game industry, and we think that Space Pioneer has the potential to become one of the best space based games of our time. All we need is your support in order to make this game happen!
Our goal is to make a project that transcends the definition of being just a videogame; we want to make something that mirrors the complexity of our own reality. Our virtual interactive platform will include a vast database that contains information about humanity’s history as a civilization, as well as a humongous assortment of images and videos gleaned from our extensive cooperation with various world renowned organizations, including the Getty Museum, the Memorial Museum of Space Exploration, the European Space Agency, NASA, the Baikonur Cosmodrome Museum, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and the Tsiolkovsky State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics.
Space Enigma Studios is asking for funding via Kickstarter because, in spite of all these wonderful people that we are working with – our team simply lacks the necessary funds to realize the ambitions of our studio. Help get the word out on our project – you can talk about it via a social networking site (such as Facebook/twitter) or just share it with your friends. Also, keep in mind that we are grateful for any contribution made; no matter how small it is.
Our universe is somewhat of an unknown. We have more or less, researched and explored our homely little planet – but beyond earth, there are trillions of other planets, galaxies and stars that we have yet to reach. Scientists have always stumbled onto things that they could not immediately answer, and this is especially true when it comes to our cosmos. We want you to explore these unknowns within our universe. Yuri Gagarin was the first man in Space, Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon, and you will be the first explorer of our universe!
The core of our game revolves around the exploration of our virtual in-game universe via an upgradable and customizable spaceship – with the player having the ability to colonize other planets using a unique combination of RTS mechanics. Most games that incorporate real time strategy into their game-play focus on squad tactics and small bases; what our game does is allow you to build humungous cities and colonies, whilst preserving all of the elements that you love from the RTS genre.
The player can build Space Stations and can come into contact with other sentient species. He/she can choose to coexist with said species, or compete with them. In order to incorporate other non-earthly sentient life, but still maintain our purpose of making a game that's at least somewhat scientifically accurate; we are enlisting scientists and designers who can help us put into our game, plausible forms of alien life. It is entirely possible that in our hugely vast universe – exists other sentient forms of life, and we want to be able to represent that in our game.
Space Pioneer will allow you to coordinate small/focused excursions into rival territories, whilst also giving you the option to conduct massive interplanetary battles with rival civilizations. You can establish trade routes with other sentient life or punish them economically by setting up embargoes and trade restrictions. How you play is completely up to you – be it peaceful or aggressive.
There are two main perspectives within Space Pioneer. One is the standard top down god mode that you see in strategy games like Civilization, Sim City and XCOM. The other is a 3rd person spacecraft view that you see in games such as Star Citizen and Spore. These two perspectives can be changed whenever you feel like doing so and allow for incredibly unique and immersive gameplay. In other words; you can directly control your main spaceship or command squadrons of units and spacecraft.
The most important thing for our team when developing a game is to ensure that it is fun to play! We want to make a game that is educational and scientifically accurate, but also deeply satisfying and fulfilling. This is why we want to have an extreme amount of customization in our game – everything should be customizable; the engine of your spaceship, the design of your space-station and even the interior cup-holders can be tweaked and changed to your heart’s content!
We don’t want for every player to have the same exact experience; we want you to be able to explore and conquer the universe the way you want to, and not the way we expect you to. If you want to go about destroying everything in your path, then you definitely can, provided that you have enough capital. Capital dictates everything you do in our universe – be it upgrading your spaceship to include a magnetic sail as its main form of transportation, making your awesome cup holders blue or buying fuel for your spacecraft.
Space Pioneer will include single player and multiplayer. Single player encompasses everything that has been written above and includes an extensive amount of lore as well as a lengthy campaign. While multiplayer adds other players to the fold that will compete against you to assert humanity’s dominance in our universe. In multiplayer, everyone starts out with a spaceship that has traveled to a random point in our cosmos. From there, you are free to expand and conquer the universe. In addition to this free roam of sorts; there will be a separate menu for concentrated RTS battles set on either moons or asteroids. There will also be a coop mode where you and up to four other players will compete against an NPC on a dwarf sized planet.
In free roam mode; whenever you log into multiplayer, there will be 128 other players in your game – if you get destroyed, then you start out on a different server with similar leveled people. You do not lose your level status or your capital, and if you are conquered by another player – then you get back part of the capital you spent on colonies, space stations and so on. Your spaceship cannot be destroyed and carries on into the different server if you get conquered. If you are conquered and join another server – then you will spawn sufficiently far away from other players that you have time to rebuild your own colonies, stations and so on.
Our game will ship with two different language options – English and Russian. We really want to add French, German, Spanish and Japanese – our team will implement said languages if we go beyond 130% in funding. Also, we are strongly against any form of DRM; our view is that all it does is harm the people who legitimately purchase and play our game. So we are proud to say that Space Pioneer will be completely DRM free.
- Space Pioneer’s Back-story:
It is the 22nd century – thanks to advances in technology; humanity has actualized scientific theories that where once deemed unrealistic and unfeasible. Concepts like the warp drive are now used in space to travel incomprehensibly large distances. All of the world’s space agencies have unified to form the GSA, or Global Space Agency, whose increased funding has been used to colonize other planets and solar systems; autonomous colonies are relatively common and expand on their own accord. Humanity has moved on to inhabit other worlds, with earth being transformed as a whole into one large ecological preserve and museum. Space infrastructure is advancing at a rapid pace, and is helped massively by robots that maintain and increase humanity’s grasp on the universe. These robots all maintain a complex shared communications network, and eventually become sentient AI (Artificial Intelligence) through this channel of shared coexistence.
This shared AI wants to contact their creators (Humanity), but does not know how, and is met with confusion as well as the mistaken belief that the AI colonies are alien in nature. Because of this, humanity chooses to ignore the AI’s efforts to contact them. To bring attention to themselves, the collective AI creates artifacts from humanity’s past missions to space, and spreads them in close proximity to earth as well as its human populated colonies. The AI’s goal is to give their creators the opportunity to advance their technical prowess in space.
- Concept of the Game:
The player’s character is introduced as a cadet in the Academy of Astronauts within the Global Space Agency. He or she is part of a routine training expedition on the desert like planet of Gliese 581 D. He/she, along with a number of other cadets, are on a scouting ship – when they notice that in front of them lies the unmistakable relic that is an Apollo module – which cannot be anywhere near as far away from earth as it is! At this point, the cadet remembers that he has heard other astronauts mention that when exploring other worlds, it is possible for one to stumble upon artifacts that look remarkably like they originated from earth’s past. How these artifacts came to exist so far away from home is a confounding mystery.
To uncover this conundrum; the cadet heads to Earth – specifically he goes to the World Museum of Space and Cosmonautics. During this curious self initiated investigation, the cadet meets a virtual archivist who instructs him to look for specific historical artifacts in various other museums on earth. The completion of these tasks enables the player to construct a chronological history of Humanity’s advancements in space – from China’s first gunpowder rockets to NASA’S interplanetary missions. In these museums and exhibits; he learns about history, culture and science. In the finale of this tutorial, the cadet gets access to a personal spaceship, in which he proceeds to fly to the Large Magellanic Cloud to observe our Milky Way from afar.
Our studio believes that it is more than possible to create a game that is both educational and entertaining. There is no need to sacrifice one for the other! It is our firm belief that this makes us pioneers in our industry – as not many games can lay claim to having both these aspects.
Every player will immediately have access to an in game database that will constantly evolve and expand when the game is released. It will be incredibly extensive, and will include everything from scientific theories to recreations of museum exhibits.
Our cooperation with different museums ensures that we can recreate many historically significant human advances in our game. In effect, among other things, the visual history of human spaceflight will be actualized within our game. People who may not be able to visit certain museums can do so via our game. The full list of museums that are working with us are as follows; the Getty Museum, the Baikonur Cosmodrome Museum, the Memorial Museum of Space Exploration, the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum and the Tsiolkovsky State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics. These organizations do not participate in the direct development of our game - they provide us with resources and knowledge. Space Enigma Studios is the sole developer of Space Pioneer.
Where we differ considerably from other space based games, is that we want to make our universe as vast and scientifically accurate as possible – every planet and star system that you have the ability to visit will correspond to its real world counterparts - we use NASA’S and ESA’s extensive databases of images and information for this.
Colonies and cities that you can build are designed by professional architects (you can still customize them of course) – something that is unheard of in our industry. Because of this; the structures in our game (man-built or otherwise) will be very detailed and realistic. Since you can colonize planets of varying sizes – our game takes into account the gravity aspect of each individual celestial body. This means that you get to build crazy whimsical structures on moons and hardier structures on larger planets.
Space Pioneer will include a large assortment of music in an effective and non intrusive way. We plan on using genre radio stations to sort out what type of music you want to listen to. As was stated in the introduction – we are working with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra to provide our game with an assortment of classical music. In addition to that, our game will include pop music, electronic music, jazz, rock and pretty much anything else that you can think of. Of course, there will also be an option to turn off music altogether.
Educational talk shows and podcasts will also be included as two separate stations. We want to have a variety of topics in these shows – for this, we want to recruit the National Public Radio or NPR. There will also be a plethora of different popular podcasts that will be pre-recorded specifically for our game. These podcasts will talk about the game industry, space and even politics!
A variety of amateur radio associations will have a unique presence within our in game universe. Collectively, these associations make up a total of more than 160 countries! Players of Space Pioneer will have the opportunity to contact (via their call signs) members of these organizations through the game’s interface.
There will be a radio station in our game that is dedicated completely to comedy. We want to attract as many world class comedians as we can. The comedy sets within this station will all be prerecorded; we want to use a variety of famous artists – our ambitions are only limited to our budget in this regard.

Crowd funding gives us the opportunity to realize our dreams, ambitions and ideas. If we were to go and seek funding from a traditional publisher – they would be chiefly interested in the game’s franchise potential and its ability to appeal to a mass audience. If we came up to them and said here is a really cool game that’s set in space and is educational – their response would be, is it a third person shooter? Do you think that it can compete with Halo?
We want to make a game that does not compromise in any of its aspects – deep customization, fun game mechanics and an unprecedented attention to detail are all things that we strive to accomplish. If we went for a more traditional funding route, then it would be highly likely that we would have to alter and dumb down our game to appease the higher ups. Unfortunately, most publishers care about the bottom line and think solely of their own profit margins. They are free to release your game how and when they choose – our studio feels that a traditional approach to funding simply doesn’t fit our project.
Kickstarter eliminates this problem and allows us to wholeheartedly develop the game that we want to. It enables us to develop a deep and personal game that doesn’t have to distill itself into a streamlined generic conglomeration. Through this funding platform – we can present to you a game that strives to be completely different from its competition. Our studio will make you a game that is utterly unique and believe that Kickstarter is the perfect way for us to do it.
Space Pioneer will release first on Windows and Linux. We are also guaranteeing development on Mac and Wii U. If we reach a stretch goal of 300,000; then we will also develop on PS4 and Xbox One. If we reach 450,000 dollars in funding – then we will develop for the PS3 and Xbox 360. We have plans to port the game in some capacity to mobile platforms such as the PS Vita and Android devices.
Since Space Pioneer is based on the real world universe; the majority of text within our game will reflect on that. The back stories of numerous planets and galaxies will be written in detail. We will include a database that details humanity’s cultural and scientific history. Where we deviate from established scientific literature is in the unknown – specifically other civilizations and alien life.
We want to have numerous races within our game that have detailed and plausible histories. They will have their own unique governmental structures, personalities, language and culture. Our thinking is that if there is other life out there, then our game should realistically portray what’s out there, and not have 2 dimensional caricatures of subverted stereotypes. To adequately realize these ambitions; we have recruited Anton Pervushin to write different segments of our universe. He is a very accomplished writer that specializes in writing topics that stem from the outer reaches of space.
Risks and challenges
Making games is not an easy task and requires an enormous amount of effort and time to realize. The deadline that we have set for Space Pioneer allows us to create a game that doesn’t compromise in its ambitions. We don’t anticipate any huge complications and earnestly believe that we can accomplish everything that we have set out to make.
With that said; if any problems or issues do happen to arise, then we will make sure that our backers are the first to know. We are infinitely grateful to our fellow Kickstarters for helping us make this game a reality! We want to be fully transparent during the development of our game – so we will constantly update you on our status and progress. Also, we will try to respond to as many comments on our Kickstarter as possible – we value any input that you give us – gameplay ideas, artistic concepts, constructive criticism and even fan fiction is always appreciated!
Space Pioneer is currently in the pre-production stage of development. We have worked out most of the core gameplay mechanics/concepts and our team is actively working on the story as well as art for Space Pioneer. We have assembled a fantastic team of scientists, programmers, artists, writers, designers, architects and astronauts/cosmonauts. Our studio promises you that if this Kickstarter is successfully funded; we will make you a game that is fun, entertaining and like nothing else in the video game industry.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
