About

My project will create street-side photo galleries across New York City, with the photos coming from my Brooklyn photo series http://rustyralston.com/brooklyn30. Think street art, but with photography!

This is a very ambitious project, and a project of this scale cannot be competed without your help! You can play a part in something new - not something common like a photo book with a limited audience, but an experience that thousands of people can enjoy for free!

Instead of art being relegated to galleries, street art brings art to the streets where people encounter it in their personal lives. In the same way, photography has been relegated to galleries and computer screens with limited audiences.

It is my goal to break photography out of these places and onto the streets by creating approximately 25 pop-up street-side galleries across NYC: on construction walls in SOHO, the sides of industrial buildings in Brooklyn, the corners of the Lower East Side, and wherever else a public free space is available in New York City. Through making the pop-up streetside galleries come to life, I want to engage people with beauty in their everyday environments.

Each gallery will consist of ten 20"x30" posters from the "30 Days in Brooklyn" series (http://rustyralston.com/brooklyn30), spaced horizontally on a building wall with one of the posters serving as an explanation about the street exhibit. This is the same type of paper that advertisers use to promote events and brands, it is not photography paper - it is more similar to newspaper.

The money generated will pay for the printing and distribution of these 20"x30" posters and the installment of the street-side galleries (83%), the printing and shipping of the rewards (10%), and the required kickstarter fees (7%). I hope to do 25 simultaneous street-side galleries across Brooklyn and Manhattan in the month of December.

My "30 Days in Brooklyn" photo series website achieved over 8,000 page views in 30 days, and I hope to translate that traffic into the real world with these outdoor galleries. I imagine these street-side galleries will last around 3-4 weeks until they deteriorate into the urban landscape. Hopefully, some will last much longer.

Also, due to minimum printing quantities of 100 copies for each poster, I should have enough copies to repeat this exhibit again in the spring, or add more exhibits if the first run is successful.

I truly appreciate your pledge - your contribution brings this project to life. With this project, I aim to bring beauty to our everyday environments, to use our shared spaces for good, and to help more people appreciate photography. You're a part of my team, and it's not going to happen without your help. Thanks for making this possible, hopefully we can raise the $8,000 and do something new by bringing these street-side photo exhibits to the people!
