Ursa Minor Bakehouse
We started Ursa Minor with the desire to supply fresh, delicious produce using local, in season, organic ingredients. We are passionate about Real Bread, made using traditional methods, free from chemical additives, to create honest loaves that are unique to the North Coast.
We have been making bread, pastries and sweet treats from home kitchen for just over a year and now feel it's time to expand. We want to create a welcoming space where people can pick up a fresh loaf, a tasty treat or enjoy a quiet cuppa.
We (Dara & Ciara) grew up on the North Coast of Ireland and can't imagine being anywhere else. We met each other at Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge and very quickly realised our common interests; outdoors, the sea, travelling, coffee and of course good food!
We spent a year travelling around Europe, South America and New Zealand and were fortunate to experience some incredible places but more importantly it opened our eyes to wealth of amazing, honest food and drink.
Ursa Minor Bakehouse
We have a simple goal; to bring Ursa Minor to everyone! We are both self taught baker, we want to share our passion for real bread and delicious sweet bakes.
To us, nothing can beat the North Coast and although we can be partial to wheaten or soda bread we want to bake something different in the hope of complementing the tradtional with Ursa Minor's ethos of local, real and fresh ingredients in an effort to be part of the already growing reputation of Northern Ireland as a top food destination.
We've been supplying cafes on the North Coast for over a year and over the summer of 2014 we were blown away by the support we received when we visited town markets to share our bread and sweet bakes. This is what has encouraged us to move forward. We have been organising pop-ups and continue to be humbled by the genuine interest and excitement for our journey. We want to bring Ursa Minor to everyone on a more permanent basis.
We have been fortunate enough to be able to work with some fantastic people who share our passion for real food, local, fresh produce.
Everything has been moving super quick for us, we feel like we're always one step behind! We've just invested in a trusty new van so that we can continue supplying and we have put everything else into a bread oven, kitchen equipment and specialist bakeware. Now we need your help!
We have found the perfect space that will allow us to sell our bread, sweet bakes and offer a range of delicious hot drinks. Over the past few weeks, we have been operating pop-ups in the space, as a test to see if people would come to pick something up from us. The response has been fantastic. We have talked to everyone who came along, telling them our story and about our plans. They have encouraged us to take this step now and make the dream space that we see.
We want to create a space for community, creativity and craft. A place you are always warmly welcomed to. We want to continue to share our story and showcase what we are so passionate about. We will be sourcing some incredible teas, coffees and hot chocolates to offer alongside our bakes.
Having found a fantastic space we now want to kit it out to match our vision and create a cosy, comfy spot for our community and beyond. We aim to be serving specialist coffee alongside our delicious sweet bakes and bread and to do this there are obviously going to be a few costs.
- 50% will be used to buy a top of the range coffee machine, grinder, milk jugs etc for preparing tea/coffee/hot chocolate
- 25% will be used in preparing our counter including sink & cake displays as well as signage/decorating the interior
-25% will be spent on our till system and our furniture to create a welcoming environment.
Exceeding our target
If we exceed our target, it will allow us to continue to develop the interior of our bakehouse, provide a place to sit in and enjoy our coffee, bread and sweet bakes.
We could try and raise the funds by taking our business plan to a bank and asking for a big loan. However we love the way that “crowd sourcing” puts you, our customers and community at the heart of what we do and why we do it.
Ursa Minor is what it is because of the support it has received. Every day we get to move closer and closer to our dream. We want to share our passion and story with everyone and with your help we can do that.
We really value your support, as friends, customer, and pledgers. Donations are hugely appreciated and we will be sure to stretch every penny as far as possible. We want our wee business to have a positive impact on our local community, patrons and wider world!
We have come up with some fantastic ways to say thanks for your pledges and hopefully you will enjoy them too!
Please support us by pledging anything you can to help us grow, and if you can't pledge - visit us at a pop up/market stall, enjoy some of our produce in one of the cafés we supply, share our story and kickstarter on your Facebook/twitter/instagram account - everything helps us move closer to achieving our goal!
Thanks so much!

Risks and challenges
If this project fails to reach its target, the reality is, it will become a much greater challenge for us to get it off the ground. It won't be funded through crowd sourcing, but we'll regroup and try to find another way.
Assuming the project is successful there are a few problems we could come across that may delay our timescale, we will be doing a lot of the building work ourselves and it may take longer than we envisage. But we hope that we can set up and be ready to go for the beginning of the busy summer season.
The location we have found may not be ideal to reach passing trade and the tourist market but we hope with word of mouth and our continued strong social media presence we will be able to increase awareness of Ursa Minor so that people will visit us on purpose rather than chance. Being within the garden centre means we can benefit from each other's trade, there is great parking and access as well as the possibility of outdoor seating within the pretty garden surroundings! We also hope to inject a little more life into this part of the town, helping a once thriving street become popular again.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
