Divine Blood: Demon Next Door
Not every psychic is mired in danger. Some are buried in finals, love triangles and bills. Look at the daily lives of the supernatural.
The Demon Next Door
The world of Divine Blood has a lot of dark corners where heroes of all sorts of species are engaged in acts of daring to prevent the ragged world of violence from spilling over into the lives of civilians.
This expansion isn't about those heroes.
This book is about the civilians that enjoy the protection of those guardians.
The everyday world might not have threats to life and limb, but it has its fair share of adventures.
Maybe some students decide to pull a prank on a rival school and use a little psychic talent to make it happen.
Or perhaps your character is just learning that they aren't human.
Try on the joys of being the legal guardian to a reincarnated God or Demon.
You could have just discovered that the neighborhood you've just moved into is full of weirdos and mystics.
Or are you struggling with whether or not to tell your significant other about your secret?
This campaign book primarily focuses on the more light-hearted side of living in the world of Divine Blood.

A suggestion for a character concept to include as a pre-generated character in the scenario to be written for the next book. There will be eight categories of characters and backers with this reward will each get to pick a character to fit in one of those categories. First backer gets first choice of category.
The actual categories will be posted when all the votes come in on which book I work on next, but look at the listings for the "Day at the Fair" characters for an example of how it will be done.
This reward is available for 8 backers, representing one-third of the pre-generated characters for the next scenario.
Suggest a pop culture element to be included in the current book.
We need video games for a world where the three biggest countries in video game design are America, Japan and Italy. Books where self-publishing was common and most bookstores have quality printing facilities in the back to print books on demand. Comic titles in a setting where most comics are posted on line and funded by advertisers and merchandise.
For movies, we already have the John Bai franchise based on novels by Ian Flemming and first portrayed by Bruce Lee. (Yes, this is Divine Blood's version of James Bond)
In television, we have the Precious Puppies and their toyline. A story about magical dogs and the power of friendship, meant for children but wildly popular with adults as well.
Anything else you can think of.
There's a limit of 8 of these rewards due to space concerns in the current book.
There are 20 pieces of art planned with the initial kickstarter goal. 10 of those are up to being suggested by backers.
You want a lover's quarrel or a high school prank gone wrong depicted? Make the suggestion.
Name a new Precious Puppy and prove yourself as a Dog Person!
We've already mentioned the widely popular cartoon show in the reward section on pop culture, but now's your chance to add to the list of the residents of Hounden, the main setting of the show.
Already mentioned in the novel and short stories are the following:
- Shuck, the Irish Black Dog
- Kirby, the Cerebus
- Princess Tiangou, the Fu dog
- Prince Sirius, of the Dog Star
- Tindal, the Hound of Tindalus
- Fenny, the Fenris Pup
Up to five more names and concepts will be accepted from backers.
Suggest a new sentient species to include with the book.
Most of the 16 minor races that appeared alongside Demons, Gods and Humans were suggested by backers. I'll accept up to two more races to add to the list for this book.
Copies of the physical softcover upon completion.
A signed copy of the physical softcover upon completion.

What I learned from the last kickstarter.
When I ran the kickstarter for the Divine Blood RPG it had been the first time I ran one for an RPG project rather than a novel. As such, I ran into several issues that I did not expect resulting in it taking me almost a year longer than planned to get the book out.
The first change in strategy that I have made is that I am looking for the full price of what I expect to be the minimum of what I need to commission the art, formatting and everything else. Last time, I only looked to raise a small portion of the total cost of the project and took the rest out of my living budget over time which made me vulnerable to emergency expenses that slowed me down. In this case, I can still raise the cost out of my living budget if the project fails to get funded, it will just take longer. If I do get funded, then I'll be able to commission all the art, formatting and editing all at once and have money on hand for the delivery of backer rewards. I have also added a buffer range to the overall funding target.
Another change in strategy is that I have already playtested the scenario myself and it was also run by other GMs as well. There are few mechanics included in the book and all of those come from things that occurred in playtesting and were worked out already. As such, there isn't really any playtesting to do. Since there is no playtesting, to be done there is also not going to be a massive rewrite done, which was the major cause of the delay with the last project.
I have also listed a delivery date for the book early next year. In all honesty this me being cautious. I hope to have the book finished well before that, but the matter of waiting for art to be finished followed by the formatting is one that I have less control of.
Risks and challenges
Aside from the standard challenges facing a one-man operation, the most likely place that I will find a challenge assuming a successful funding of the project is in commissioning artists. As I sub-contract artists, I have to deal with the fact the artists I commission have other costumers. In one instance last time, I had the misfortune to have one of my artists decide to stop involvement with the project. While all the money he'd been paid for uncompleted work was paid back to me, the time was lost and I ended up having to assign his commission to another artist. And, since I wanted all the art of that series to match, I had to reorder the parts of the work that he had completed. While all the art was eventually used, it still represented a delay.
In this case, I plan to use artists with which I have done frequent business in the past on other projects. This will shorten the time necessary to approach and evaluate artists and help ensure that nothing like the prior event occurs.
During last project, I also had the misfortune to experience the death of my laptop which slowed down my writing progress significantly. As it currently stands the only writing that remains to be done is stuff that is waiting for backers to settle upon. Even so, I also have a fresh new laptop with a fresh new warranty. I also have recently acquired a modest source of funds earmarked for emergencies both personal and professional so that similar setbacks are prepared for.
At this point I do not foresee any other specific setbacks. There are no proprietary issues since all the mechanics included will be of my design. The writing and playtesting are finished. All that remains is to commission the art, editor and formatting and the book will be ready.
In the event that the project is not successfully funded, I still plan to put out the book, but it will be with little to no art, recycled art or else will have to wait until sometime next year before I can collect all the desired art for the book.
I currently am also working on a novel for a separate world setting as well as a short story collection for Divine Blood including the current 12 short stories and 3 new ones that will only be in the anthology. Neither of these is yet ready for a kickstarter, but I hope to get both finished within this year.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
