About this project
An unprecedented documentary on drummers: Featuring Carmine Appice, Hal Blaine, Carter Beauford, Bun E. Carlos, Matt Cameron, Chad Smith, Buddy Rich, Max Weinberg, QuestLove, and countless others, past and present, in rock, jazz, alternative and metal music.A feature film finally dedicated to the guys and girls in the back. The mystery; the laborers,’ the rock solid foundation that every great artist, band and song was ever built upon; The Drummer. For without the beat our world would have no rhythm and our culture would have no defiance.
Our “Ferocious Drummers” aren’t based on endless drum licks or the most Ferocious shredding drum solo. Our drummers have a personal story to share on the magic it took on and off their drum set to survive and go on to become a successful drummer. Our drummers play for the song first and in doing so, they have brightened our world and inspired countless others to shape their creative dream.
We explore how song steered the mood of our culture and for the first time the many legendary drummers that were the foundation of our favorite music and bands that have shook, rattled and rolled our souls for over 100 years.
Ferocious Drummers is a long overdue tribute to drummers of past, present and future. The charismatic and prolific insight of our drummers and drummers in general have remained a mystery for years but will remain a mystery no more. As we continue today to film more legendary drummers and colleagues please help us spread the word on this unprecedented film.

Stan Lynch, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
We have invested over $220,000 from our director’s house painting money and a private investor into Ferocious Drummers in the past five years. This initial investment has provided our cast, crew, travel, legal, edits, sizzle trailers, meetings, mailers, as well as a social presence to help build up our loyal fan base of followers on Facebook and Twitter before launching our final fundraising campaign to complete the movie.
Our personal funding has also afforded us to hire two of the best Directors of Photography in film. A fabulous and dedicated crew of over 50 people from makeup to gaffers have worked on our film, including a couple of world renowned rock and fashion photographers—all graciously cutting their day rates because they believe in this film as much as we do. So far we have shot 53 hours of film in NY, Chicago, Milwaukee and Los Angeles with an average of at least 5 interviews a day in each location.
The support: You’ve seen our cast and colleagues who have been filmed thus far. They were not paid by our director to tell their stories. They are eager to be a part of this film and finally tell the story of the drummer. There isn’t a drummer that’s been approached by our producers and director that has declined to be a part of this movie. Everyone wants in! What we've filmed, the support we have from sponsors and overall buzz about the documentary.
$150,000 goal will allow us to finish the movie and provide budget for a minimum of 2 more location shoots, music licensing, and basic post production.
We can now begin to schedule and film five more top tier drummers in two locations NY, LA, to fulfill our needed generation of drummers and styles. We can film a few more music journalists, historians, and include a few of our drummer’s colleagues and family members during each of these location shoots.
We can clear some photo rights, (most would be stock). We clear a few live performance clips from some drummers. We reproduce and record our own background music that allude to our feature drummers and the sound of the day. We do music well and we do it without plagiarism—but it wouldn’t be the original scores from the legendary bands and drummers themselves. We can, however complete a good film.
Stretch goal of $300,000 will allow us to make an timeless movie with 4 location shoots filming and 10 additional top tier drummers. Not every drummer is a featured drummer in our film.
We can extend our stay in NY, LA, Chicago and head to London for a few colleagues, family members of a few drummers who are no longer with us.
We can shoot 40 more hours of film and though it seems like much, a hundred hours of footage is not a lot to chop through for a two hour film of epic proportions.
We will have the budget clear even more featured music licensing and live footage on our drummers and their perspective bands.
Stretch goal of $350,000 and beyond. YOU HAVE SHOWED THE WORLD THAT IT’S ABOUT TIME WE HEAR FROM THE UNDERDOG….THE DRUMMER!
We can obtain even more footage and music turning this film into a true classic that will become the topic of conversation during festival season.
We can now hire the very best editors for our post production. We have a great storyline and a big finish at the end of Ferocious Drummers but a great editor in post production is priceless to keeping the pulse up until the finish line.
We don’t want an average movie! Give us this opportunity and we will deliver a classic, rich, and timeless film on the best timekeepers ever!
June to October – 2015: Finish filming cast, colleagues, family members.
June to October 2015: While filming, start to clear some music, photo, licensing rights.
December 2015 to June 2016: Editing—post production.
August 2016: It's a wrap, start distribution and showing at film festivals.
January 2017: WE HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE OSCARS.
Your support will help us interview many of these remaining Ferocious Drummers to take part in this unprecedented documentary. Please don’t be offended if you don’t see your favorite drummer here. This is only a sample list, click here for our complete wish and confirmed list of drummers.

Risks and challenges
Scheduling of our busy drummers to be filmed at one of our location shoots. We are based in Chicago and many drummers will be touring through one of our local venues. We will work with their management team to schedule based on their availability. We were able to film Carter Beauford when the Dave Matthews Band played locally before he hit the stage.
Negotiation for legal rights of audio and video footage. We have retained one of the best music licensing and clearance teams who has experience in negotiating blanket rights for all of the audio and video footage our film will require.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
