What We're About
Functional and Beautiful—the only two categories of goods worth owning. At GoodWood, we don't stop with one or the other. We incorporate both into each piece we create. From dicing vegetables to cracking open a cold beer at the end of the day, our goal is to add more joy to the things you already do.
The goal with this Kickstarter is twofold. First we want to share GoodWood goods with as many people as possible. Secondly, in order to accomplish our first goal, we need a few new tools that will speed up production. These new tools will not only allow us to efficiently craft the rewards you see on this page, but will also open up new possibilities in the custom handmade furniture that we build.
When you support this project, you are supporting a family based, homegrown small business. We believe in family first, giving back to our community, chasing your passion, and doing what you love. While working for yourself can be daunting and challenging, working together, as a family is an adventure and brings us closer together.
Our base funding goal of $12,000 gets the ball rolling, but we consider that the bare minimum. Our stretch goal of $25,000 will greatly expand the potential of what we can do. If we hit our stretch goal, every backer that has given $45 or more will receive a FREE BOTTLE OPENER! You can help us hit our $25,000 goal in two ways. First, back our project, but don't stop there. Share our project with your friends. Help us spread the word and earn that FREE Bottle Opener!
So where does all the money go? Out of the first $12,000, after accounting for Kickstarter fees, the cost of materials for all the rewards, and the cost of packaging and shipping, we are left with approximately $7200. From that, our three main purchases are a stationary belt/disc sander, a bandsaw, and a 3 HP cabinet tablesaw. The SawStop tablesaw we have chosen is the safest on the market, making it virtually impossible to cut yourself—a welcome peace of mind considering someone in the U.S. is severely injured on a tablesaw every 9 minutes! What is left will go towards accessories such as sanding belts and saw blades.
Thank you for your support! We have a variety of rewards and several combinations of items.
We make two main types of wooden cutting boards. The first being End Grain boards which are by far the easiest on your knives, but also the most expensive due to higher material costs as well as labor. The second best for your knives are Edge Grain Cutting Boards.
While a wood's face grain is beautiful, it should never be used as a cutting surface. We hand sort our wood and select the pieces with the most attractive face grain to be used in our Cheeseboards, Coasters, and Bottle Openers.
All of our cutting boards and cheeseboards are finished with a food-safe proprietary beeswax board conditioner.
We are also offering a Framed Mirror as a reward. The frame is made from reclaimed wood. Each mirror is unique due to the variances in the reclaimed wood. We leave the front surface minimally processed to highlight the rustic beauty of each piece.
Risks and challenges
One challenge from the start is estimating a timeline without first knowing how big of a response we will get from our Kickstarter. Will we only hit our base goal of $12,000? Or our stretch goal of $25,000? Or double that? Quadruple? To that end we have set a fairly liberal timeline for ourselves. The first step once we've received our funding is to order all the new tools and machinery. Our goal is to have everything in the shop, set up, and begin production within a month of funding. The first rewards will start shipping shortly after. We want to get our rewards in our backers' hands as quickly as possible.
The good news too about our plan is that we've designed it to be scalable. Our goal of $12,000 is the minimum required to get this project underway. Our stretch goal of $25,000 will allow for a few additional tools that will speed up production even more. So, the larger the response, the quicker we can make each reward.
