What is this project about?
Hello! I'm Karthik, a Berlin-Based Indian Illustrator.
I've always been enamored by cultures and mythologies from all around the world (as you can see from my collection of work on www.artofkarthik.com), but none so mysterious and enigmatic as the ones from Ancient Egypt: like Ra the sun god racing through the sky in his fiery chariot, or Anubis the mysterious guide of dead souls or Seth the chaotic spirit of the desert.
I would like to share with everyone, my childhood fascination with these Ancient Egyptian Gods, in the form of 10 papercraft boxdolls.
Why papercraft dolls, you ask? Well, as a kid, I couldn't afford to buy many toys so I used to look at toy catalogs and make my own crazy toys with just paper and glue! To this day, these moments of creating something out of nothing, are amongst my best childhood memories.
Last year, I ran a successful kickstarter for papercraft boxdolls from Indian Mythology - here.
Now I ask you again for your support to make this dream project a reality!
I'd like to imagine that somewhere in Ancient Egypt, a bunch of children were happily running around the bustling streets, busy playing with dolls just like these! I'll never know. But perhaps some children, big and small, in today's world, can find the same happiness.
What is the purpose of this project?
Fun for kids & adults, Learning about Mythology, Relaxation, Decoration, and in the right size could work for Tabletop Games :-)
Direct fan funding allows me to pursue the vision in my heart. With your support, I can create original papercraft box-doll designs. Now is your chance to contribute to the production of a unique vision and reap beautiful rewards!
Are the rewards completely digital?
Yes, presently all of the Boxdoll blueprints will be completely digital, in the form of PDFs that can be downloaded, printed and assembled.
Where does the money go?
Researching, designing and building these boxdoll characters based on their history and mythology is a very time-intensive process. All of the earnings and support will directly encourage the continued development of this project and more like it in the future!
Are the boxdolls easy to assemble?
Yes, the boxdolls are fairly simple, taking around 5-10 mins per doll to cut out and assemble. Check out this short video of me putting one together - here
What kind of paper should I use?
All of the boxdoll blueprints are printable in in both A4 ( 8.3'' x 11.69'') and US Letter (8.5'' x 11'') sized card-stock. Regular printer quality paper should work just fine. For higher quality, 65 lb or above card-stock can be used.
When will I receive the box doll blueprints?
When the campaign is over, I will send out a survey for you regarding your rewards. Once I receive your survey response, I will send out the blueprints within a few days via email. If you're also getting a custom avatar boxdoll, this may take a few extra days :-)
Risks and challenges
I have already prepared designs for 10 Egyptian mythology BoxDolls and just need to make some tweaks and adjustments for this project. I will be adding more designs for stretch goals, but since I'm a reasonably experienced illustrator (and I've designed papercraft dolls before), this won't be an issue. Since the rewards are digital blueprints with no physical products or shipping involved, I don't foresee any problems with completing this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
