This Kick-Starter project is to help me to take this from a heavily play-tested prototype to a fully manufactured game. I have already used my own money to make the prototype and it has been play-tested over the last 9 months by seasoned table-top gamers and children 6-10. At the UK Games Expo 2018 the game was heavily demoed with a huge range of ages from 5 - 55 and throughout the weekend the feedback remained extremely positive. This experience is what has led to me believing in Hyperleague Racing as a product that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
How to try the game for free!
On the website is a free 'print and play' version of the rules and all the current All-Star cards for you to mess about with! I recorded some 'how to play' videos with Luke and Rich from the Glory Goals YouTube channel and you can find them here on YouTube.
Interviews and reviews
The amazing Nerdling Mum did a great interview about all things Hyperleague Racing on her Blog page. Check it out here!
Rory from Stepping through Games also interviewed me and we spoke about the game but also about Mad-Dad Games and why I choose that name. Read it here!
Tris from The Hairy gamers gave the 'Print and Play' version a go with his 8 year old daughter! You can read about his experience over on their Facebook page!
At the UK Games Expo 2018, Beasts of War did a short interview with me. You can watch it here!
I mentioned the awesome Luke and Rich from The Glory Goals YouTube channel earlier. While we were playtesting the game, we recorded a play through with a chat afterwards. You can find that on their YouTube channel here.
Once Hyperleague Racing has finished, I will work my socks off alongside the manufacturers and artists to get the game made! Good news is that the conversations I have had with these partners have been extremely positive to date, so I expect no issues going forward! When they are complete, I will open a Pledge Manager to allow you to confirm your shipping address and postage. I also promise to update you on our progress on a weekly basis at least!
Hyperleague Racing has already got two expansions scripted and more beyond. The Sector 98 setting has a storytelling game within it that my daughters and I made up over a year ago and there is more. But all that depends on whether this is successful first.
I have looked in to this and shipping will be charged after the Kickstarter concludes based on the actual costs incurred to ship. We will collect this via our pledge manager after the campaign ends. This is so we can be fair to all our backers (shipping is rarely one size fits all). As a rough estimate, the game will cost about £5-10 to send within the U.K. and roughly £10-15 to ship within Europe and approx £20-25 elsewhere (for a 2kg parcel), but that is a rough estimate, and this may well change by the time we get to shipping due to socio-political changes in the U.K. and abroad. The only assurance I can give is that you will pay the exact postage it costs me to send your game to you.
Risks and challenges
This game has a few key challenges ahead of it but I'm fortunate to be surrounded by several experts in the gaming industry who are doing a marvellous job of keeping my anxiety at bay :)
Challenge 1: Manufacture
The prototypes and ships are being made by Dicesports and WordForge Games respectively. I have a great amount of respect for both Rob and Mark and they have successfully Kick-Started several projects between them. I have already discussed quantities, shipping, distribution and am confident that unless a major disaster befalls the project, the game will be able to be manufactured and distributed on time.
Challenge 2: This goes bigger than I anticipated!
If the volume exceeds 2000 units, then it may be a case that the date for dispatch will be put back as the manufacture may have to leave the UK for distant shores. I have already approached several overseas companies with good track records of producing quality products. If this is the case, then we will keep everyone informed with regular updates through Kick-Starter and through social media.
Challenge 3: It's my first project. (But not my first rodeo...)
I have less experience in table-top games design specifically but I do have over 20 experience in writing and running live role-play systems.
Most notably, Shadow Wars; which won Best Medium Sized LARP at the UK Live Roleplay Awards in 2016 and ran for 10 years.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
