This fall I’m going to start applying to grad school so that I can continue to further my artistic experience. Before I do this I want to create an entire new body of work, which I will then showcase at my first solo show, Artifice/Artifact.
I’ve always had a great love for art and as a little kid I can remember wanting to be an artists. Throughout my education I have been lucky enough to have a lot of great support from Friends Family and teachers. this past year my ideas really began to take off and I finally felt like I had something to say through my art. This new body of work I’m creating is focused on identity inspired by traditional masks and headdresses of cultures all around the world. I’m fascinated with different people groups and how no matter where you go you will find some kind of traditional headwear. The significances may vary but the thing that stays the same is almost all people, through the use of the mask, find it easier to express and transform into an entirely different person. Though the process of hiding ones identity there is actually a defining of true identity that is taking place, a reference that is left behind, an artifact. And that is where the title of my show comes from.
Using my own hand made masks as well as other traditional ones as inspiration I will create a series of paintings that will hopefully bridge a gap between figurative and abstract. I also hope to create some video art exploring concepts relating to how one sees themselves in the mask and then how they are perceived by others. Currently I am I the very early stages of art making. Unfortunately I do not have the funds to buy more supplies so the work is at a stand still. With your help and support I am hoping to raise enough money to set everything back into motion.
All the funding I would receive will go towards buying the supplies, shipping costs, paying for the space and the other prep work and advertisement that will go into organizing a show. I have created some nice rewards that will allow everyone to get someone form of my original artwork.
Ultimately it will be up to you and you’re to support that will allow me to reach my goal and organize this show. So I want to say thank you for checking out my kickstarter and I’m looking forward to potential possibilities thanks to your help!
